98” TCL mini-LED in the living room and a 42” C3 OLED in my home office. Both are HDMI 2.1, so all the bells and whistles. Always surprises me when people have quite old TVs here, not because I expect everyone to be on the latest stuff, just that as enthusiasts I expect people to have more relevant stuff for the hobby. I understand not spending when something isn’t broken but then we’re talking a console that has just been replaced because a new one has launched

You will feel the benefit of a new TV with true HDR, VRR ect when setup correctly. Actually that annoys me slightly with TVs that out of the box default settings are awful. My Samsung QN90B looked worse than the KU6400 it replaced.
That reminds me, someone I worked with decided to get himself a new TV for the football so come black Friday a few years ago he went out and got himself a new TV. No issue with that, his money whatever but when I asked why just for football he came out with "Because I'll be able to see more of the pitch"
I and a few others tried to explain without laughing to much that you could have a TV the size of a bus and you'd still only see the same as everyone else but we all agreed that the eyes are open, the mouth moves, but Mr Brain has long since departed.

As well as the settings out of the box, ads are a nightmare on new TV's. LG's you can turn it all off but the default home screen was enough to initially give me buyers remorse - and that was coming from a 10 year old 32" hd set.

Still using a 10 year old Sony as it’s 3d capable and we actually have a fairly large 3d film collection. I always choose performance over fidelity so I’m not bothered about 4K anyway. Probably one of the 100 people that are gutted 3d got dropped like a stone.

Yeah, modern TVs are basically ad delivery and analytics platforms sending everything you watch back to base. It’s not up to snuff features wise but I’ll be quite sad when my Firefox OS Tv gives up the ghost.

Sounds like AgentHomer is trying to convince himself that he needs a new telly imo. It was dead subtle, no? Yes, you need a new TV - one that does VRR so you get to put everything on max settings (surely the main point of the pro) and one which is larger, as unless you are sitting very close to that 40" you aren't really going to notice the extra pixels the pro throws out.

Yes, I am really thinking that I have been missing out without VRR as that does seem (to quote Digital Foundry) to be a 'Game Changer'. Sadly I cannot really go much above 40", I think 42" or 43" would be my limit due to the size of space I game in. I sit about 1.5m away from the TV. To be honest, I really shouldn't get a TV as I am not flush right now but the LG C4 is reduced and Sony's OLED is available on Amazon in a pay in 12 months option so I am really tempted. Urgh. I only work part time and am also a carer so I don't earn a huge amount but gaming is pretty much my main form of escapism which is why I tend to spend more than I probably should on it. Back to the Pro after my terrible hijacking of the thread... I tried Star Wars Outlaws on it (not the best title to try, I know, but I am midway through it) and I noticed that the option to change Quality setting had gone so I am assuming I am now playing quality (the mode I was on) but it now feels noticeably smoother so I assume it's running at 60 fps. I don't mind 30fps but the increased frame rate was a noticeable improvement.

Well in that case - whilst VRR does make a noticeable difference, with the extra power of the pro it's less of a concern as titles should be hitting 60fps more often.
I really think a bigger screen is what would have the most impact, allowing that extra resolution to shine. So if you are limited by space, upgrading just to a newer panel won't give a massive upgrade - in this case it's probably sensible to save the money and wait till the TV really needs replacing

Nah, an OLED at the same size would be night and day.
But don’t spend money you don’t have on something you don’t need. You can still play games just fine and Pro is taking care of a noticeable upgrade by itself.

Whilst you're waiting to collect it in Sainsburys get some gold bars. Scoff them in the car with your new OLED in the back seat. Happy dayyyyyys.

So a few more things I've noticed about the PS5 Pro with Star Wars Outlaws. As mentioned, it is definitely now playing at quality mode with 60 fps which is a nice boost. It also looks to my eyes like it is running at a slightly higher resolution so textures look smoother which is also a good bonus. So far, so very much like buying a new GPU for a computer. However, I am not yet sure on PSSR as although the image is clearer, there is also some kind of fuzz when moving which I didn't notice before, also I think you see textures load in a bit more than they used to which I am sure is due to PSSR. Hopefully it will be patched out and developers will get on top of this when they have a bit more time to get used to the new technology. It's not game ruining by any stretch, but I'm not a DF type person and still noticed it.
Overall though, I'm still pleased with the improvements in this game and look forward to trying out more when I've finished my play through (F1 24 is sitting there looking at me and I really want to try that next).

Admittedly I've only loaded up FF7 Rebirth for a few hours so far, but I'm definitely feeling a bit of buyer's remorse at the moment. The console is noticeably noisier than my launch model with just TV speakers on. I never even heard the old beast in comparison, but there's constant low fan noise from this when in game.
It probably would've helped if I'd actually started the game on the base model to have a comparison point, but it's a pretty underwhelming title graphically IMO. Which kind of sucks seeing as it was my main reason for upgrading.
Ah well, I'm sure I'll grow to love it when I've tried a few more games...

I usually play with headphones on but do agree to an extent that when I do not have them on, I am aware of the fan. I do not find it that noisy though, mine is a very gentle hum but it does feel a little louder than the base PS5 was. I don't hear it with the headphones on and it is nowhere near as bad as the PS4/PS4 Pro were (at least, my one, perhaps yours is louder?).
I do think you probably mostly notice differences in games if you played it on the other machine. That worked for me with Star Wars but I am sure if I just picked it up and played it without having spent time using it on the base system, I'd probably also be underwhelmed. That's not necessarily a slight against the new machine but a compliment to how good (most) games look and run now.

Oh yeah, nowhere near as loud as the PS4 pro, and I haven't noticed it ramping up or down (which REALLY grates with me). It's just kind of there in the background. Definitely not a biggy, just a minor gripe really if this is going to be as bad as it gets.
This gen has spoiled me. I went from a house near a noisy road to this quiet street where you'd hear a pin drop and I only ever really heard my SX or PS5 if I got up to do something near the TV. It's easy to forget how bad the previous gen was at times.

Isn’t that the one according DF that’s supposed to be stunning? I’ve only just set mine up and tried out Horizon Zero remaster and that looks great but not sure how much better it looked than on my Ps5 on Friday though. Also tried Ractchet and Clank and that looked stunning the textures looked amazing. Don't have a drive yet, so only trying out the Ps+ Extra titles. I was impressed how I could install my SSD card from the OG Ps5 into the Pro and worked without any hassle. My Pro is quiet and I’ve not even noticed it. My PS4 Pro was like a fucking hovercraft. My Ps5 was loud due to drive being used but the Series X is really quiet.

Had some weird old glitching last night (Outlaws still) where the game would just slow down to single digit frames per second, or perhaps more accurately seconds per frame. You could see the motion blur on each frame. Only a full reset cleared the issue. Hopefully that's a game specific thing, or maybe just a random thing caused by the way the game was going.

kernowgaz it's certainly nice looking, but doesn't seem to be light years ahead of remake to my amateur eyes. Just certain things like very last gen looking hair, and a few low res textures stood out really.

But the difference from playing on Performance on a base console is significant.

Yeah, there's no denying that. If I'd started it on the base model then I'd certainly be slumming it on quality mode and wishing I had the Pro, so I should probably shut up now!

I've not played Rebirth, so only going by the DF side by side comparison, it does look like a massive improvement. But, it was more that the standard performance version looked like arse than the Pro version looked fantastic in and of itself.

Yeah that always struck me as the inherent issues with UE4 and how Square uses it as opposed to the actual ability of the base ps5.
