You'll soon be reminiscing about breath of the wild to people younger than you that have never even heard of it, before you realise it's all too late

Ha. You could at least change your step size iirc. Still.... The restricted movement just added to the sheer otherworldliness to it. I also can't explain just how unsettling the game was. It was the turrets. Just a pyramid stuck on a cuboid yet really sinister. You got a cardboard version of the moon as well and you could draw out your own map on it denoting landmarks and drilling locations on each region.
I don't think I ever got one drill right though after the first area (and only then because of the great big fuck off "X" in it).

To be fair it's more exciting talking about old games than a 700 quid console with three extra pixels and better puddles.

It was a totally batshit game for sure. I felt almost suffocated by it for some weird reason. It really created this very strange sense of place.

My neighbours were Beta testers for 3D Construction Kit. Seeing it was a reality check about the capabilities of the Freescape engine.

Driller was a game that worked so well because of the weird juxtaposition of the advancements in technology (the Freescape engine was revolutionary) and the restrictions of technology (the Freescape engine was so limiting and looked horrendous. That coupled with the mechanics, the premise and the soundtrack made for a really surreal and at times nightmarish game.
3D graphics at that time were no doubt truly gamechanging yet everything about the rudimentary appearance and the limitations in frame rate meant games utilsing engines like that were weird beasts.

What was that game that was essentially a 3d open world game using wireframes wherein you crashed on a planet and had to spend your time trying to build a starship to escape said planet. Anyone remember?

C'mon guys time to back in the van and back to your retirement homes. We're playing dominoes and it's mushed up spaghetti bolognese for dinner.

Anyone remember? On the C64? Hmm I was going to say eidolon but that wasn't wire frames. Good chance you didn't build a spaceship too, er. Give us some more clues

Eidolon was the cave one wasn't it? You had to find the coloured crystals then fight a dragon. That was fucking terrifying as well. Sure it was the C64. Hmmm. Maybe it was the Amiga. Then again it looked really basic.

No love for Zamzara? Used to play that with my dad all the time. Game was hard as nails.
The C64 version of Total Recall wasn't half bad too.

I could never get my head around Mercenary TBH. Boulderdash was more my thing, I have never found a version for my phone that played as well as original First Star version

I just bought that Bandcamp album. It was a no brainer. I've just had a scoot through and put that Driller version on again and it's almost reduced me to tears! I remember my dad asking me to put Driller on when I was younger as he loved the music. Fuck me, that hit hard.
