Sony were probably talking to Intel mostly to twist AMD's arm a bit on getting a better deal. Team Red make a lot of money off PlayStation and they wouldn't want to lose it.

It’s this generations complete nonsense. I’ve given up trying to pretend I can see a difference. I love it. It makes Minecraft, for example, feel like a real place, the effect is as eerie as it is amazing. Not that I play Minecraft, mind, but its‘s a good example of the effect that ray (or path)tracing can have even in a stylised game. My theory is that we intuitively know/see when lighting is life-like.

RTGI is certainly a lot more impressive than RT reflections (not that they don't look good too), good lighting can add so damn much to a game.

I've just seen a teaser for the ps6 now.

I've just seen a teaser for the ps6 now. The world's gone topsy turvy. Where? Was it one of those shit sites again, like Gaming bible? Or is it that EG article talking about Sony using AMD for PS6 which isn't really a tease as well another console is always going to come out and these things are planned over many years.

The quest for realism in graphics baffles me a bit.
It never factors into my purchase and I'm much more inclined to go for a game with a unique art style over anything attempting photo-realism.

I prefer looking st something different from reality to help the escapism work more. Can you imagine you looking photorealistic in something like Rez infinite? Say it projected you in there or some shit. Who the fuck wants to see that? I want to get away from it all. Saying that, photorealistic skyrim in vr would be a nice way to spend time drinking a few beers and some smokes though

It's not really a tease, like I said these things are planned over many years. Another console is an inevitably rather than a surprise.

Personally, I just want to experience a game the way the developers intended it to be experienced. Whether that is next gen photorealistic tech that lets you see the individual pimples on someone's face or whether that is 8-bit pixel art. Both can look fantastic and want hardware that makes both possible. Definitely been a steep cliff of diminishing returns in recent years though.

I don't think Sony are talking about a PS6 here. I believe it's just the news cycle reporting on the same thing they heard but Sony hasn't actually said anything.

It's not necessarily all about realism. Look at the recent Doom Path Tracing mod. It transforms that game in really interesting ways. So it's not all about photorealism. Good lighting is good lighting, no matter the art style. I'm an RT fan. It was always the holy grail, and I'm sort of emotional that it happened in my lifetime at this level of quality much less what it'll be a decade from now. Pre-RT games will be like looking at warping textures on a PS1 and wondering how we ever thought it looked good. But yeah, in the moment, when you're in the transition, for most people it's a shoulder shrug or an eye roll for sure.

It‘s not mutually exclusive, though, is it. You can have unique visual art in architecture, creature design, camera angels,, whatever, and still have it look realistic. The idea of every game having a non-realistic art style seems as restrictive to me as an exclusive search for realism.

I remember rendering a static ray traced sphere using some weird pre-Blender 3D software on my 486. Think it took the better part of a day to render. But it sure was a shiny looking sphere.

I may have had a dodgy copy of Lightwave at one point, it helped prove I was not going to be an animator.

I was thinking about that just a couple of days ago. It was both magical and shit at the same time. Like how I imagine Disney World to be.

In most games ray tracing is very meh. If you want to see the difference when it’s actually used properly play or watch a high quality you tube video of cyberpunk on pc with ray tracing overdrive. Incredible. The neon lights illuminate everything around it like it’s real. The whole world is reflected in water and all those beautiful glass buildings reflect the world.
But yeah, in most games it’s poorly implemented and in some cases gives almost no benefit whilst tanking performance.

For me Insomniac developed games have been ones specifically on console where RT has been used in a great way and you can still play at 60fps at a great resolution. Obviously path tracing for Cyberpunk on pc is another world.

I remember having a similar bit of software to gremmi, think it came on a CD with some PC mag a mate got. It took hours on end to render a single static image on my P120. Definitely more basic than Blender 1.0, but around the same time.
This is going to do my head in trying to remember it! I would've thought gremmi of all people would remember given his posts in the name the game thread...

I think it's stuck in the head of everyone that played it.
I'm amazed noone has had a recent pop at it and launched it as a free to play game. There is a really good chance you could get into the rocket league market.
