Can't hit 60fps with current hardware, yes it can just optimise your game properly. There are loads of games with a 60fps performance mode that looks great.

The arguement that a pc costs more doesn't weigh true across its lifespan when you consider total cost of ownership. I can get a Series X and 8 years of Game Pass Ultimate and be pretty much set for a generation for less than the cost of a 4090, before I even factor in the rest of the PC. So you chose the most expensive graphics card to do the comparison, seems like a fair way to do it.

£700 sounds like a lot, and it is. But then so is £550 for a series X with a 2tb hdd and sparkles on the outside. So the question then becomes is the PS5 Pro worth the extra £150 which suddenly doesn't sound quite so bad. Sure, if you think like that it can be seen as not too bad. The difference is that we expect to be able to buy a console for less than £500. They might be able to get us to think of it as a premium product at £550 or maybe even £599, but beyond that is going to cause a reaction from people. Plus, the X is a 4 year system. I've not followed the 2TB version (had to just look up the details), but I would say that is also overpriced for just a storage upgrade. They should have that at the launch price of £450 (or a little more) and drop the price of the original to something like £379. Edit: and, yeah, don't compare the price of an Xbox to a 4090. A better comparison would be something like a 3060 for similar performance, which is a £250-£299 card.

I'm fully invested in the PlayStation ecosystem, I bought the PS4 Pro when it came out so I guess this version is targeted at me?
It's just too much of an investment for me, maybe if I could part exchange my PS5 to get it at a heavily reduced price but I just don't have that kind of disposable income anymore to pay full price.

That was my original idea with One X and PS4 Pro, part-x my base models. In the PS5 Pro scenario after selling my PS5 I'd still have to part with another £350 and lose access to being able to play UHD discs. £350 and a UHD player down - and the payoff would be playing the same PS5 games. Same was true last gen with the mid life refresh machines BUT in that instance it felt like PS4 and XBO were really feeling long in the tooth as far as 4k displays and HDR went... And that doesn't feel to be the case this time. My PS5 is still a marvel to me.

The day after the announcement before ... all the videos are dropping on video playforms with their opinions. Not many happy people's. I think the only other console that hit this price point was the 3DO?!?
This announcement about the the non disc release almost feels like a litmus test to gauge reaction and wether they can go forward with it. Wonder if the 'current' online reaction will force them to captulate or if they'll still push forward with the decision.

If I could sell my current digital PS5 with the additional 1TB SSD and 2x control pads for £400+ I’d upgrade to a Pro without a doubt, but I don’t think that will even be particularly easy.

I'm pretty sure the PS6 will be disc-less with the accessory for those that want it. Next Xbox as well.

Online marketplaces for consoles are what caused me to dip from console gaming. I like all digital but I didn't want to go all in on one console so went back to pc.

I still can't quite believe anyone thought using Ghost of Tsushima was a great way to push the Pro, it's a great game and it showed just what you could still do on the PS4 in the year it was superseded but it's still very much a PS4 game from 2020 even with the PS5 touch up.
I mean, really? Why not show off an actual PS5 game that could perhaps get a boost like Returnal? It runs internally at 1080p, not that you'd realise, surely the Pro could demonstrate its power in uprezing that to demonstrate PSSR.

What would go a long way to convincing people is showing game(s) that currently run like stuttery fuzzy shit on the current consoles and not just partially zooming in on some barely imperceptible background details.
The problem with this is your calling out your current hardware for being a bit limp.
Tangent l, but wtf is up with the zoomed in cutouts that only fill the middle of the screen so you can't actually tell much difference?

I regret buying my digital only PS5. Sony have a monopoly on the marketplace and as a result prices you pay for games, yeah they have sales but there is no competition at all. If you have the money and somehow HAVE to have it, pay the best part of £1000 for the disc drive as well

Both Microsoft and Sony would love to go full digital and Sony not having a version of the Pro and the Slim with a built-in drive feels like them dipping their toes in to see whether people will stomach it with the next gen. Only thing that might stop them are legal issues with them completely cornering the game software market and I expect they would have to be more accommodating of third-parties selling digital games.

If they don't even offer an *optional* disc drive for the PS6, I'm out.
Not just because I love physical media - although I do! - but because I'm buggered if I'm going to lose the ability to play the 60-70 PS4 and PS5 games I've amassed on disc over the past decade or so.
Throw in the fact that the launch PS6 is likely to be in the £700 range (judging by yesterday's farcical announcement), alongside Sony's monopoly on the digital PlayStation gaming market, and it's one of the easiest hard passes I've ever contemplated.

Funnily enough, that's what I said when I bought the PS5. "I've been waiting ages to replay some of these PS4 discs" (my PS4 drive was broken).
I bought digital versions for pence instead. I haven't used the drive beyond the initial sticking a disc in to see what happened.

I really fancied a Pro and I'm guessing I'm their target market - middle aged, no kids, disposable income.
That price is just a piss take though. Feels like the old arrogant Sony of the PS3 days is back.

How, though?
To take a random (-ish) game to which I'd hate to lose access, Sekiro is currently £59.99 on the PlayStation Store. According to PS Prices, the cheapest it has ever been is £29.99.
I paid £35.00 for my disc copy from Smyths four years ago.

Or Astrobot, their major new first party game that's getting loads of positive buzz and coverage and literally came out last week. Although it already looks clean as fuck and runs at 60fps on the base PS5 - which again, is part of the problem in terms of selling a Pro console.

A 4070 is more than a Series X. You can buy a pc with a 4070 for about a grand to 1200 and then pay 35-40 a game as opposed to 70. No online cost to take into account so that gap starts disappearing really quickly. And we were talking about the 700 for a playstation weren't we?

You don't have to get rid of your PS5 so you can still play your PS4/5 games on that
As for pricing, From games are outliers, you can pick up most games really cheap in sales

I'm guessing different games? So the Witcher, for example was £6.99. AC: Unity is on PSN, etc etc.

You go PC. The initial outlay isn't going to be much more and then you save on the games and no online service cost. There will also be a couple of years crossover between a PS5/PS6, so you can wait a couple of years for comparable hardware to be cheaper. Personally, I never use my PS5 for anything but watching physical media films. Every game is out on PC as well, so don't have much reason to buy them on my PS5. Unless they really start going in on exclusives again, I don't see much reason to buy a non-Nintendo console again.

Can you get decent pre-built PCs these days?
I know building your own is always the cheaper route, but that seems like a right faff that I’m bound to get wrong.

Aunty Treats I'm not keeping the Brobdingnagian PS5 *and* what'll probably be an equally-massive PS6. I've neither the room nor the inclination If I hadn't "upgraded" from PS4 to PS5, the only games on which I would've missed out during the past four years are Returnal and Demon's Souls - everything else I've bought since 2020 has either been cross-gen or a PS4 title. If Sony maintain their current policy of releasing almost all first-party games on PS5 and PS6, I won't be short of new releases to play; if third-party developers and publishers follow suit, as they have done this gen, so much the better. Pricing-wise, I'm less concerned about the specifics than the principle of it: if I've already bought a game once, and haven't lost/broken/sold it in the meantime, I'm not about to buy it again just to keep Hermen Hulst in ivory back-scratchers.
I know I'll have to accept an all-digital future at some point, but I don't want to lose the ability to play my catalogue of physical games into the bargain. That's all.
Charge me £80 for an optional disc drive if you must, Sony, but please don't deny me the choice altogether!

You'd have played a much shittier version of Cyberpunk though
One day I'm going to send you a load of PSN cards to free you from your physical shackles to play any games your little heart desires whether it comes on a piece of plastic or not
