Ours is not long back from a war graves tour in France/Belgium with history. He had a ball, but was aghast at the ferry charging £5 for an hour of wifi(!), the lack of AC & facilities at the hostel they stayed in, and the fact he had to make his own bed. We've got him too used to the good stuff obviously. He didn't even go to the pub with a few others, the eejit, as the teachers had said they'd get booted from the trip if they got caught. He's better behaved than I would have been- I didn't tell him the stories of what we were getting up to when went to holland with the school... They go to Iceland in october for geography which sounds like it will be awesome. A meeting about that trip this week made my missus jealous. No wonder it was so pricy when they're living it up in hotels with flumes and geothermal pools FFS!

Yeah, can imagine mine being much the same! He was appalled there were no toilets in their room! (Or at least I assume, given it's a hostel)

Ha, yeah, no trip abroad was complete without a visit to a souvenir shop to buy knives. Mad. Or some bangers.

Wife is catastrophising, thinking he's going to be left behind or some other far out nonsense. On the plus side, taking advantage by going away for the weekend, depositing the youngest at the in-laws! \o/ This happened on a school trip I was on - not to me, some other lad. On the coach on our way back to the Ferry port in France, we stopped at some services so everyone could have a wee. Predictably the one time the teachers didn’t do a head count, someone had gone to the shop and didn’t get back on the bus. The coach got pulled over by the Gendarmes about 30 minutes later. (This being the mid-1990s no one had a phone or anything.) Obviously it was hilarious for the rest of us, but I kind of felt sorry for the poor lad that no one had even noticed he was missing.

I am definitely not telling her that! Although tbh, my boy is definitely someone who gets noticed (sometimes for the right reasons, sometimes the wrong...), So if be surprised if they didn't notice the noisy fucker wasn't there!

School holidays start from today. 6 weeks of no hassles trying to wake the pillock up in time to not be too late for school.
Hallelujah! \o/

Just found out that our 15 year old is vaping again after the last time we caught him he assured us he'd stopped.
All advice online says not to punish him but really what the hell am I supposed to do.
I come from a family of smokers, my Dad began vaping right at the beginning of the craze, he has COPD now so I can't help but link it to that. I've never touched vapes or cigarettes, the fear of serious side effects always scared me as a kid so can't quite wrap my head around why anyone would want to do it knowing that you're in for a lifetime, potentially, of financial and health concerns.
We've got a holiday in two weeks for a fortnight, I'm thinking if I can stop him vaping now and get to that point, that's a months cold turkey. Kids, eh?

It's all a nightmare. I also came from a family of smokers and have never smoked. My son mentions kids in his class that vape but so far doesn't seem to want to, which is good. Like all these vices though, at some point they've got to make their own choices. When they're getting to late teens there's not much you can do.

I’ve used “I watched your grandad die of lung cancer - don’t ever bloody smoke” on mine, haven’t been tested on it yet (my oldest is 15 and seems pretty sensible). I do wonder if my graphic descriptions of the consequences of smoking roll-ups for 40 years are as effective a deterrent for vaping though. Kids might not see that the same way they see smoking.

My eldest has had a few times vaping, seems to be vape free atm, on the route to and from school it's like driving through fog some mornings its so prevalent. The crappy corner or booze shops don't give a fig. Kids just don't see it as being as bad as smoking, which to be fair it seems it isn't. I'm an ex smoker no desire anymore, did take me a good few years though.

It's certainly not helped when the stuff seems to be aimed at a younger generation.
He's got a Rick and Morty vape FFS.

The nearest high school to me had a shop directly opposite it that was vapes and retro sweets.
I do give them credit for calling it Sugar Puffs though.

We’ve started sleep training my son with the Cry It Out method. I have never felt like more of a bastard.

We’ve started sleep training my son with the Cry It Out method. I have never felt like more of a bastard. It's tough, you'll feel horrible for a while, but rest assured it'll pay off. We did this with our daughter and she has been a fantastic sleeper ever since (six now, and hoping I've not jinxed it). Once they can self sooth it's a game changer, and it shouldn't take too long. Preservere!

It's actually the other way round for us. I'm the soft touch. She's hit her limit with his two-hourly wake ups and has sentenced him to this solitary confinement.
He woke up this morning a changed baby. Thousand yard stare.

Kids are on school holiday while I work from home….iPads all day it is! Yeah, I’m going to be faced with this shortly. The 11 year old has two more weeks of primary school left after tomorrow, and I’ve got the whole of the summer holiday period to see her through. We’re away for approximately two of the weeks, taken as two separate trips, but the remaining weeks have me once again pondering how I’ll do the work I want to do whilst not letting her stew in front of electronics all day…

I had that with the preschool ‘graduation’ last week. Half the kids stood in years being forced to sing and do stuff in front of parents, most of whom ended up going to the front to console their sad child (we had to do the same). Ours hates group singing but they still tried to force her to do it in practice for weeks and be hates ask the grown ups there.
Be glad when she’s out of there in a couple of weeks.
We have the same with iPads in the summer too. We’re managing to have about half the time on holiday and the oldest has holiday club for air 5 days do it won’t be too bad but work is about to get hectic so it might be bluey and Netflix on non stop repeat some days.

Mine has his nursery leaver’s parent’s brunch tomorrow and his final day on Friday. There are only 8 of them ‘graduating’ this year and three of them, including mine, started before their first birthday. I’m expecting a lot of tears.
He’s also let slip that the leaver’s song they’ll perform tomorrow is going to be Make Your Own Kind of Music which feels a bit wordy for a class if recently turned 4 yr olds.
After being full time for that long I can safely say they’ve raised a very good child for me.

What's a classic family movie I could watch with my 7 and 11 year old tonight, along the lines of BttF? Struggling for inspiration. The obvious one is Ghostbusters, but I think that might be too scary for the 7 year old.

I have a list on my phone… which my 2 older kids mostly disregard when I suggest film night. But there’s still hope for the 7 year old, so how about:
Men in Black Pirates of the Caribbean The Mummy National Treasure Big Who framed Roger Rabbit Inner Space Batteries Not Included The Princess Bride The Last Starfighter

Done all of those with my 2, with the exception of The Mummy. They just shrug every time.
