and now I need to flash the vBIOS on the GPU.
I didnt know this was a thing and now I'm questioning if it's even worth potentially bricking my 3080 /chinscratch

You need to make sure you flash the PSU as well, otherwise it won't get the full voltage. It's a manual process involving a tin foil glove and a metal needle...

Thanks man. I also have a squirty bottle to keep it all cool during the flash.

Not strictly speaking a PC build, but I was thinking of getting the Z906 Logitech speakers with a Sound Blaster X4 to drive it (my PC only has shitty onboard Realtek with stereo out). Anyone have any experience with any of that kit? Anything better?

I don't think I've had a sound card since the 90's. Integrated audio is basically all you need, when you only have two small speakers.
I do wonder, however, if it would make my G432 headphones sound better...

Unfortunately for those you want an external USB sound card. This is because the main benefit is moving the digital to analog conversion outside of the (very electrically noisy,) computer case. So an old internal isn't much use sadly.

Yeah, this is specifically to drive the speakers listed which are 5.1. I can’t do HDMI pass through to something as I use DisplayPort, unless there’s a way to do HDMI audio with DP video, I dunno.

I’ve got those speakers. I’m no audiophile, but they seem pretty good to me. Have had them for six years… not sure how quickly speaker technology moves but surprised Logitech hasn’t brought out a new model.

I just decided to bite the bullet and get them. It’s not necessarily a modern solution but a) modern sound setups on PC aren’t really a thing anyway and with that in mind b) uncompressed PCM will be better than the DD/DTS Live stuff anyway.

Guess I'd need a decent card for that.

I just said fuck it and dropped $2500 on an ibuypower number. Specced it up to the nines and clicked buy now.
It's not badly priced either, all i9 with decent ram and M.2 drives with a 3070ti. All just to play Tarkov. Maybe some Elden Ring or something else my 8 year old gaming laptop hasn't got a fucking hope of playing.
Actually, I have quite a backlog now I think about it.

Great news for the builders out there who have been holding off for far too long, graphics cards are starting to come back to a sustainable number and are dropping in price.

Maybe I won't need to wait too long then to upgrade my 1070 for some extra VR power.

Someone on the old forum told me in August 2019 not to buy my 2060 super, so glad I did.

I got my 2070 just before the Super cards were announced. Looked badly timed but with getting at RRP it has done me well since then.

My PC arrived. It's the first time in around 15 years I've had something top of the line (well, almost), and it's glorious. Currently playing everything that I was hobbling along with on min details at around 30 frames, and with this it's all topped out and locked at 144 frames.

You mean you don't like your machine looking like unicorn vomit?...
I kind of like having mine on as a temperature display, and even ended up getting an addressable strip to add to it.

Haven't managed to raise its temperature over 49C yet. And I've tried!

I can recommend openRGB if you want everything in one colour or turned off. Mine tend to turn back on seemingly at random. RGB is such a mess. I also have Argus monitor for controlling all the fans from one place.

Cheers, was actually doing my head in trying to turn off the RGB on the graphics card. Nothing else seemed to want anything to do with it.

You’re trying to go from dp to usb-c?

I guess there's something like this thing, but can't speak for its quality. There's some similar ones on Amazon too but with a couple of negative reviews here and there.

You’re trying to go from dp to usb-c? I'm trying to go from mini dp on laptop > convert and output to usb c hub > USB c hub vga > output to monitor. Don't ask me why!
