Hi all
A bit rusty on pc building...
I have inherited a very old optiplex 745 sff which has an hdd and CD rim drive installed.
The 2 sata ports are being used by these drives and I have just bought an ssd to install as the primary drive (leaving the hdd as secondary)
What's the cheapest way to get sata and power to the ssd without replacing the power supply??

And even if you do, the cheapest option would probably still be to remove the CD drive, replace it with the SSD, and then buy something like an USB external disc drive.
Alternatively, if all SATA ports are taken, you are going to need a PCI-E SATA expansion card, and I don't even know if your motherboard has any available slots.

Ah OK, it does only have 2 data ports (it's ancient!!)
Shane you can't split sata data like you can do with the power.
The Cd rom isn't essential, I'll just leave it in there if I need to use it in the future.
Thanks all

(The CDROM I mean) I guess you could take out the non-boot drive and stick a decent SSD in there. Clone the boot drive onto the SSD. Remove old boot and add in the other drive to transfer whatever is useful across too. Keep the biggest one for a data drive?

Ideally I want to have the ssd as a boot drive but the hdd as a storage I think I misread you (I thought you had 2 HDDs and a CDROM) What others are suggesting is for you to harvest the SATA data port from the CDROM drive. And then stick an SSD in. Convert the SSD to the boot drive and once that works convert your old HDD as storage. If you need a CDROM drive get an external USB one and stick it in your cable drawer for the almost never times that you will use it.

I've just taken a look at the CD rom and it doesn't seem to have a sata power cable going into it
Just has the sata data cable and a wire which has a white 4 pin female connector going into it?

Q6700 is ok. I'm still on an AMD 1055T which is around the same. Can even do VR with a 480. That said, I cannot wait for my planned upgrade next year, this system owes me nothing.

Maybe not the thread for it since I'm not asking for advice, but I've always wanted to take an old computer from the 80s or early 90s, like an Apple IIGS or something, gutted the interiors and put some modern hardware in there. Not sure how feasible it'd actually be, but I like that retro look.

Yeah, it's going to be tough to get a useful gpu.
Maybe an RX 550 low profile? 4GB if possible. It'll cost more than it shoulf though.

What's the current GPU anyway? I know that processor didn't have any integrated graphics, so you gotta have something in there already. Probably nothing useful, but still.

I remember my old prebuilt PC with a Q8300 had some weird integrated graphics. Where it could only run WOW at like 28fps, but somehow when SWTOR came out, it could manage that in the 40s.

Kinda depressing on the price front but not as bad as anything slightly better. Other might know more about newer cards. Check your PSU though, Dell usually had the bare minimum in there in those days.
