Well the 1070 went to my actual nephew, the rest of the old PC is going to the kid I've helped raise, especially since his mum died a few years ago. He's going to secondary school in September so he needs something.
So I will clean it up, add a semi decent GPU in there (maybe the 4060 that I intend to replace) and the rest of the specs pretty much hold up. I7 8700k, 16gb Ram, buy him a monitor and he'll be grand I think. Won't be cutting edge, but I'm sure Fortnite and Roblox will hold up.

I’m due to be helping out with a friend’s PC build tomorrow and he’s asked if I know where is best to get a free or cheap Windows 11 license key from. This is a completely new build from scratch, so we don’t have a Win 10 licence to upgrade from.
Any advice much appreciated. Thanks!

I bought mine (win 10 online activation key, NOT the oem) from kinguin for about £25 a few weeks back. Everything was simple and it installed fine.
I got the free win 11 upgrade option the day after, once all the win 10 upgrades and stuff had taken place.

Thanks Derbs. I will check out Kinguin. Was it easier to do 10 then upgrade rather than just go straight to 11? Not looking to disagree - just wondering why you’d do it that way?

In all honestly, I just didn’t think about going straight to 11 for some reason (we use 10 at work so I just had that in my head). If the prices are similar then just do that

Those nice looking MSI monitors appear to be on Easter sale... Still £800 though. A bit rich to digest. Still looking for a good step up from my 1080p 32" LG ultrawide which has a line of dead pixels about 6mm from the bottom of the screen.

They the OLED ones? I've been completely convinced by the Dell QD-OLED monitors I've picked up. Really excellent and (for the ultrawide at least) cost less than an equivalent LCD would have five years ago.

Help! I built a PC for my son a couple of years back. It's this spec:
Mobo: MSI MAG A520M VECTOR Processor: Ryzen 3100 Gpu: Geforce 1060 6gb 16gb ddr4 750w
My lad can play fortnite but he says it's skipping frames, lagging (I have decent internet speeds), he likes to be on discord video or voice chat usually at the same time as playing. He's getting decent fps.
What's the best upgrade here? I'm thinking ryzen 5400 then maybe a 3060? Or is more ram the better option?
I'm a bit miffed, I thought this would be fine still but I'm thinking maybe Fortnite is intensive.
Thoughts appreciated 😁

I’d look into how much a 6 core CPU is if he’s complaining that it’s slowing down with Discord stuff, the 5400 is another 4-core.

Ah, yes, 5600 I think it is I've had a look at I would definitely go with the 5600, I think Fortnite was migrated to UE5 so there may be a bit more horsepower needed under the hood. Think 6gb VRAM on the GPU side might be starting to limit performance as well. But you have plenty of Headroom with the PSU and 16gb DDR4 is more than adequate. Nice thing about AMD, their sockets hang around longer than a couple of years. Presumably he has got an NVME drive for internal storage, what are the speeds on that?

Seems like 5600 now and then gpu for bday/Xmas might be the plan. I'll flög the old bits after replacement. Then next year ram then the year after whole new pc!

I'd say that's plenty fast. If he's hitting issues with multitasking, which I think he is from how you describe his video call issues, I think that a 5600 would relieve that quite well. The 8-core 5700X is relatively cheap now as well but that'd be a more future-minded upgrade to go in anticipation of a faster graphics card.
edit: and it might not come into play if you end up rebuilding in a couple of years anyway.

Figured this thread has the highest chance of someone knowing. My house recently got fiber installed, and now I have the option to get 2.5 or 8.5 Gbps interwebs. I've always had the modem in the garage, with cat6 to my own wifi router on the first floor. I think I can use two cat6 cables on my netgear router to act as one 2.5 Gbps cable, but I have no idea howTF you do it for 8.5 . Basically I want someone to tell me the gear to do it is super expensive and nothing, not even Steam will take advantage of it.

8.5 Gbps, Jeremy? That's insane!

That's what, a gigabyte per second? I can't think of any scenario where a regular person would be able to make use of that.

I had a long post here with actual info about SFP+ and fibre and Wifi 7, but today in early 2024 there's no way you can take advantage of an 8.5 connection unless you already need it, and if you needed it you would know. Just administering it is a pain: you'd want to split out your Internet serving duties to dedicated switch and AP for wired and wireless unless you wanted to try making your own router or spending an obscene amount on a Draft Wifi 7 one, and every single client you're running would need new hardware to even accept the connection speed. Overall, as enthusiast grade hardware, it's not actually that expensive, especially if you decide to make a hobby out of building your own router and all that, but it's a lot of effort. And in the end, you won't even notice except for speed tests. Unless it's literally the same price for 8.5 as 2.5 and you want to while away a few afternoons learning how to serve a connection, don't bother. You'll just be fretting about how to get the maximum speed to everything. Hell, you'll almost certainly be doing that with 2.5.
TL;DR: The actual cost isn't the money, it's the new hobby you'll have to take up in order to actually use it.

Seems like there are some atrociously looking wifi routers that have a 10G wan port and two 10G lan ports, my PC has one 2.5G port, but those 10G pcie cards aren’t expensive. It would mean I’d have to replace some cables with CAT6a. The 8.5 costs about €17/month more than 2.5 . But realistically, all that trouble would result in what, being able to download a 120GB game in 2 minutes? It’s weird because I’ve always went for the craziest internet connection available to me, but it’s the first time everything after the modem won’t be able to keep up. In terms of terminology, SFP means fiber instead of CAT6a?

I'm in my first month after getting 1gig fibre and it's currently a 12fold speed increase over what I've had for the past 6 or more years. Genuinely excites me watching it rip through big downloads (recently did horizon 90gb in around 10 mins) so doubling or more again would probably melt my brain entirely.

Yeah, there's a lot of very cheap higher speed network gear that's coming out of China in recent years which has made it much more affordable.
SFP is the small square slot you might have seen on some higher speed network gear - it's a chunkier thing which includes a transceiver as well as the connector so it lets you go between fibre and copper cable as you need, or upgrade as you go. It's only really a consideration if you're going for longer cable runs.

My router has a single 2.5Gb port, which seems kind of pointless on its own. Surely two ports should be the minimum for anything like this... Chances are I'll have to replace it if the new Openreach connections don't support link aggregation.
I've toyed with the idea of upgrading to one of the new Openreach speeds (1.2 or 1.8) in the summer when my contract expires as my NAS and PC are already capable of saturating it, but wouldn't consider it if I didn't already have kit with 2.5Gb ports. It'd be total overkill for WiFi use and anything restricted by a gigabit connection.

Reminds me of getting Fibre after dial up. Going from 20 minutes for an MP3 to a minute or less was mind blowing. But 90gb in 10 minutes? Fucking hell.

This probably isn't the right thread, but it's about PC's so hopefully it's ok.
My son has bought an old joystick, late 90s job. Obviously it connects through a 15 pin port thingy. Does anyone know of a piece of kit that can adapt it to usb?

And there doesn't seem to be anything available on Amazon, unless I'm being stupid, which is entirely possible.
