A 4690K is £38 + postage at CEX. Ooh thanks, that looks like the way to go. Was starting to get excited about a new setup but price wise and for what I need this is the right thing. I did a little search before and couldn't find anything for less than a few hundred so assumed the second hand market was a no-goer, probably should have put a bit more into it!

Replaced the CPU with one from CEX, now back up and running. Way less faff than expected - I've always been a bit scared of CPU stuff since opening an Amd processor without a heat spreader in the old days and hearing sure warnings on how delicate they were and how hot they ran.
Hopefully that'll keep me going until component prices get a bit more normal again. If it never happens at least I've got an Xbox now!

I caved and bought one of the Samsung 49" super-ultrawide CRG9 monitors which can be got for £640 atm. Wow it is ridiculous. Just stretches over the edges of my desk. Literally have to turn your neck to look at the sides of the screen. Mercifully Win 11 allows the toolbar to be centred, which helps a lot. Gave Valheim a quick whirl last night and Freesync 2 really seems like a huge step up from Freesync 1 as well.

If it's Freesync Premium Pro or whatever then it does a much better job compensating when the frame rate goes under what would ordinarily be the 'minimum' refresh of the monitor. My LG CX is functionally the same as a 'proper' Gsync monitor because of this, and the monitors I've been ordering (and having to send back because a thousand pound screen should not have bright pixels on it) have handled it well, albeit without the convenience of variable overdrive rates.

So - I told my PC to do its Asus 5 Way Optimisation auto overclock thing and now it won't boot. From doing some reading it sounds like I might do well to clear my CMOS.
Any idea how I would work out what's causing it to fail? I'm thinking RAM but could easily still be the CPU (or could be as simple as it's started off with something ridiculous that breaks everything).
Guess I could always just leave it alone (assuming I can get it to boot after clearing CMOS) but where's the fun in that?
Also replaced my PSU but doesn't look like it needed doing which is a bit of a pain. Old one had done 13 years so not too bad anyway and at least I've got a backup if I ever want to build a new system or give it away!

Hello.
I'm thinking about getting my first PC in about 15 years. What's the deal with Bluetooth and WiFi functionality? They seem to be a rarity on motherboards, which almost seems laughable. The manufacturer will add some stupid RGB lighting, but not provide this functionality.

Plenty of motherboards out there with that on. If it has WiFi then it inevitably has bluetooth too. If you're going AMD then the MSI Tomahawk MAG x570 is a well reviewed board that has you covered.

I'll check it out. I was sniffing around pre-builts from Scan, but it seems I may as well build my own \o/

I'd check out the availability of the parts you're wanting.
Always suggest a self-build as it's fun and relatively easy but the parts situation always out a damper on it

Normally there's both more fun and a cost saving in buying parts and building, the current scenario generally favours pre built as pricing of components is fact.
Fortunately a WiFi/Bluetooth dongle is under £30 so if you find the perfect build and it doesn't have those things they're easy and cheap to add.

I grabbed a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 PCI-E card and really impressed with it, currently using my pc over wifi since I moved my desk, I sill have a long cable for streaming games from my pc to laptop but everything else goes over wifi now.

Aye, I've specced out something similar to the pre-built one I was after, and it's come out considerably more expensive, before I've even added a cooling solution…

Anyway, I'm excited. This is all MSFS fault: I need MOAR than the Xbox can give me.

Has anyone tried a monitor with a built-in KVM? I love the idea that I can use it to tidy up my desk and easily flip my mechanical keyboard between my work laptop and desktop on the fly. Looking at the Gigabyte M27Q primarily as it seems fairly niche despite the number of people that must have similar setups (work laptop + gaming desktop), any other recommendations?

I had a Dell UP2716D which has a built in KVM and I loved it for WFH. I could just plug my work laptop into my hub and switch the input with one button press when it prompts you and you're good to go. I still regret selling it to jump on the high refresh rate bandwagon (which of course meant I needed a new GPU too)
Now I just use a basic USB switcher instead which works fine I guess, and it's only an extra press of a button, but it's just another thing to clog up your desk.

I wonder how much the extra electronics for the KVM actually add to the BOM. It just seems like such a sensible idea for any monitor that will sit on a desk, that it's almost weird that it's not a relatively standard feature for all but the most entry-level of monitors.

KVM switches have always sat awkwardly in that niche of the cheap ones don't do the things they should do and expensive ones that do the things you want are £1,000+
If the last 18 months hasn't driven the price down then nothing will.

I use a software "KVM", Synergy. It's paid software, though, but it works really well on a 4 computer desk. There's a freeware version, Barrier. I have no idea how well it works (or if Synergy would be any good for gaming, tbh). github.com/debauchee/barrier

RAM. Is it still best practice to purchase a pair of sticks, or is it possible to add a single? Does it all end up running at the speed of the slowest?
Heck, does it all need to be matchy-matchy? If there are two sticks of 16GB, can I add a single 32GB in slot #3?

Guys, I’m really out of the loop with my first amd system for 20 years, seems it’s always running at 42 multiplier is that normal?

Guys, I’m really out of the loop with my first amd system for 20 years, seems it’s always running at 42 multiplier is that normal? I think AMD chips always run with a 100mhz base clock. So if your CPU base frequency is 4200mhz, then yeah. If not, maybe there's something running that is keeping it to boost clocks.

Squee – new PC is here. Love how quiet it is… for now at least. Now to install 130GB of Flight Simulator…

Ah, welcome to the most frustrating game to install. I just opened volume mixer and muted it and then minimised the game while it was updating and did other shit. Or just leave it on overnight to update at ridiculously slow speeds.

Lucky you guys. My RX480 is an old reference model that must be kept to helicopter levels of fan noise to stay cool enough during games. And the Ryzen 3600 uses point boost overdrive, so unless you enjoy the fan noise going up and down at random, it's better to keep the fan at a relatively high speed throughout.
Plus I added three extra fans in the case for the summer, and even if they are kept at low speed, it all adds up.

Installed a new pair of 2x 8GB DIMMS last night. Booted the PC and everything reported the correct amount of memory. I shut it down and went to bed. I boot it this morning, and nothing happens. I spy the little DRAM light on the mobo is illuminated. I remove the new memory and it boots. I reinstall and it doesn't. Return to eBuyer?
ETA I note that 4 sticks of this (CMK16GX4M2Z3200C16) aren't officially supported on the compatability list. Odd: I thought memory was memory.

Assuming you have a 4 slot motherboard you can try them in the other slots to double check it's the Ram not the board. If not then send them back. Some times they're just incompatible, never got to the bottom of why it happens.
