I can see the funny side. They are giving it everything and really want this, we're far more preoccupied with worrying about our players getting hurt. Quite entertaining in its own way.

That could quite possibly be the clearest example of a challenge that if it wasn't a second yellow it was definitely a straight red. Probably feature in powerpoint presentations during referee training.

Shite for morale and the physical side to lose like this. Should never have put so much into it, or if Arteta was insistent on it should have fielded first team and tried to finish it in 90.
Won't be that Everton result that fucks up our league chances.

Genuinely think this is for the best. We might not win the league, but at least there are no distractions now so we can give it best efforts. We've seen precisely what the danger is with those injuries.
I wish Arteta had picked a weaker side and not taken those risks but I don't think this will hurt us much psychologically. We didn't lose either game after all.
How big a mistake this was will depend on what's left in the tank at 2pm on Sunday.

Didn't watch our pens (obviously) but just a mild, irritated shrug overall. Surprised how little I care about going out. Sure would have been different if 3rd/4th etc. Game clearly shows we don't have the squad (or mentality, frankly) to compete on both European and Domestic fronts.

Agreed. Vieira and Jorginho just couldn't control central midfield. They just aren't close to the same level. Didn't have the intensity required.
We evidently don't have the squad to compete effectively on two fronts yet.
Equally losing two defenders in the first half and already being fairly committed to bringing off Jesus didn't leave much room for tactical subs. Was a bit unlucky in that regard too.

Didn't help either that their goalie was insane (ours had a nightmare) and Martinelli was channelling the spirit of Gervinho.

I thought Martinelli was one of very few starters who was good tonight. Worked really hard, got kicked a lot, got up and went again.

Some pretty strong teams left in that last 8 now, won't be many easy ties for anyone. No idea who the Belgian team are teally but the rest are all pretty good.

It's an unusually strong Europa League year. We'd have been one of the favourites if we had played the first team every week, but it made no sense to prioritise EL to that degree, and we evidently weren't good enough to win it with a weakened team.
