Anybody think kung fu flicks have suffered because mma has kind of proven that Kung Fu isn't that good in a fight?

I doubt that's it. I never watched martial arts movies to learn how to give someone an arse kicking, it's just impressive stunts and choreography.

You don't see super heros doing MMA poses for example. I do appreciate grittier fight scenes, like in the Bourne movies, but there's just something about the balletic qualities of wushu that I really enjoy. /Tries to imagine a wire MMA fight |

Some martial arts actors pretty successfully incorporated MMA stuff into their usual repertoire. There's a bunch of Donnie Yen movies (eg. Flash Point) where he uses a lot of grappling, and manages to make it look cool.
That's the problem with MMA in movies, really. Yeah it's more realistic, yeah it would probably win in a real fight against a kung fu master. But it doesn't look as cool.

I've always had a soft spot for Drive (1997)
It's kinda cheesy, but it's a nice mix of buddy-movie, action and wire-fu.
Favorite Wuxia movie, although probably far from actually the best, is New Dragon Gate Inn.
Though both of their trailers make then look way worse than they are.
Best fight scene ever?
It's rare that you get a fight scene that contains such a nice story arc.

Bruce Lee used grappling in Jeet Kune Do I think and A lot give him the credit of inventing MMA and his base was kung fu. I just remember seeing a youtube of a karate master facing off against a kung fu master and it didn't end well for kung fu. But the movement, I think kung fu is a beautiful martial art. |

JCVD, Roger Moore, and of course a tournament format, with various different styles of martial arts, including a guy in a kilt.
Muay Thai has always been one my favourite styles and is also well represented.

Some of the films mentioned in this thread are absolute classics.
For me the best film by far that I absolutely love is Kung Fu Hustle.
This film quite frankly has it all and still has scenes that make me laugh out loud and just go Wow... Just wow.

It was mostly JCVD I loved as a youth and so ended up doing kickboxing for 12 years or so. Really did my health and weight so much good. I met my now-wife there.
I often think about going back, but with a toddler and another on the way it's hard to justify spending the time on myself. And it can be quite expensive too

Fair play. I'd have loved Wing Chun or Kung Fu. Not very many options in a small town in Ireland back then.
You should definitely go back, it'd be easier going back to those martial arts than MMA for example, where a 12 year probably would make you his bitch.

I did a couple of years of kung fu as a kid as well. Not sure it was any one film in particular that inspired it. My dad had a friend who was a sifu, he trained us early on, then we went to an actual studio to learn officially.
Have always thought about going back, but it's an expense, as Ape mentioned. And while I wouldn't be embarrassed of getting my ass kicked by a 12 year old so much, as I'm assuming they've had much more experience than I have, just being the old guy in general feels weird. Something like private tutoring would work better in that case, but that's even more expensive than just the weekly classes.

It was interesting but I had to travel a long way (or so it seemed at age 16) to do it, and it was at a difficult time of day, so eventually I gave up. Pretty sure I still owe the tutor a tenner and still feel guilty about it. I had already done four years of fencing at that point, if that counts (preferring sabre, because being a big oaf was semi-advantageous with that, where foil and epee favour skinny freaks with lightning reflexes who don't actually fence, just poke), and that was definitely inspired by my love of swordfighting in movies and books. |

Fencing would have been a good one to take up. I had the same attitude re Tae Kwon Do or Karate. I wouldn't change the years spent doing kickboxing. I'd be interested in doing Karate now though. Might be due to Akuma/Ryu being some of my favourite Street Fighter characters. After Sagat, Adon and Dee Jay of course. |

Yeah, I'd love to learn karate as well. I think as an adult, it seems the most appropriate since it feels pretty hard hitting. That or some grappling martial art like judo or aikido.
Probably easier on the old limbs than kung fu's more graceful movements too.

Though I do have an awful lot of favourite SF characters (esp. Karin in Street Fighter Alpha 3). And yes that is a tad ironic - at the same time I was pshaw towards karate I loved those characters. Probably didn't help that I had a friend who got his Shotokan black belt around that time and could literally do a leaping spin kick higher than my head (and I'm over 6' - he's 6'4" though). No way I could compete with that - dude had been doing it since he was single-digits-old. My brother was a judoka so that was right out too! |

It really is a great pasttime to take up, especially when you're younger. If I ever transfer back to my home town with work I'll try and use the extra time to get back into it.
