Yes, I've noticed this a bit too, but it's... idk, I think a lot of the extremely online left are the kind of people who've been on the recieving end of a lot of bullying and internalized a bit of that.
Yeah this is the angle the BBC should be looking at to be honest, if they are actually interested in the discourse around LGBT rights. You can trace some of the Trumpism'ness in recent politics to a bubbling reaction to people jumping down other people's throats for not saying something the correct way. Rather than allowing for mistakes and forgiving and encouraging learning, a select few would rather say that they're now the enemy, with no hope of being allowed back into the fold. Obviously there's plenty of bigots too who need calling out as they're usually unrepentant about it, but jumping down someone's throat immediately makes them put their back up and disengage from the point trying to be made. So they more often than not go to the people who aren't criticising them. In this case, Trump. Re jumping down throats, I would say there's some truth to that but a lot of it is fake-as-fuck because it's people going wildly out of their way to find something to offend them. Like someone will find a Twitter wanker with 100 followers making a shitty jump-down-throat post which has like 15 likes and 10 "you're wrong" responses, then a right-wing will screenshot it (removing the context) and post it somewhere for right-wingers and "centrists" to get offended by, even though they'd never in a million years have seen it. The left generally doesn't do this, not so much because they're "better" but because right-wing insane opinions are on TV, radio or blue-checkmark Twitter every damn day, so you don't need to dig for that stuff. Anyway then it becomes fashionable for people to act like all criticism they get is unfair and even if the criticism is fair, there's a mutual benefit to the person being criticized and their friends pretending it isn't and that it's just mean leftists, and crying crocodile tears.

TBF I think people getting outraged after the fact is a tried and tested method even before the proliferation of social media.

Why on earth would you put out a publicity photo of you looking like a dead-eyed psychopath?

I laughed at Doyle's criticism of the lack of free speech. It's like a parody at this point.

There's a place for satire of the extreme woke left (Robin DiAngelo types for example), but too often people attempting this just end up going full alt right and the next thing you know they're on Ben Shapiro's podcast. I guess it's easy money. Titania's twitter feed was amusing for a while but it's the same joke ad nauseum. I do like most of what I've seen of Jonathan Pie though. I know he started out mocking wokeness but these days his YT channel is mostly about eviscerating the tories.

I can't understand how you would target any of them seriously. Andy is annoying to me but that's about as far as I can go and I am *not* a tolerant man

Late to the party on this but I just watched that Dave Chappelle special on Netflix as someone mentioned it in the pub and I wanted to form my own opinion.
There were some interesting points about racism... But those could easily have been made without the other things that served no clear purpose other than to denigrate trans people. Each time it was dressed up with something to illustrate why he was right, why the people on "the other side" of the argument were worse or why black people had it harder.
So with all of that I've formed my own opinion, which is that it's pretty shit that Netflix have paid him a fuckton of money to do basically no jokes and have a platform to talk shit about trans people.

To even leave out the trans issues in his comedy special for one minute, none of his Netflix specials even remotely came close to his earlier work so I was glad it was the last one. The only thing of note that was good was his comments on the George Floyd death and that's Dave at his best, talking from experience, he's a good story teller. Shame he had to self label himself as a TERF.

Why be insightful about your own experiences when there's Twitter disputes to settle?

Pie tried to set a twitter pile-on against Ellen from Oxtra for calling him out for being sexist or something if I remember rightly I remember first encountering Pie and he was saying something reasonable about politicians being shitbirds but he was triggering my alt-right-dar extremely hard, so that is sadly unsurprising. Wanker.

Finally, the BBC can have voices critical of Trans folk on their platforms. I look forward to a Graham Linehan and JK Rowling round table special soon.

I'm sure he fully investigated the nuances of the case before deciding it was exactly equivalent to doing a parody on a TV show half a century ago.

John Cleese has cancelled himself at the Cambridge Union. It is fairly hysterical. Provided a platform to talk about cancel culture, he instead cancels himself.

I read up on the case and it sounds a bit moronic all around to be honest. Debate speaker does crass impression, students complain, university releases statement implying speaker is antisemitic and racist, out of touch former comedian finds a ridiculous way to make it about him and his new show. No-one's exactly showering themselves in glory Edit: the one source I found that wasn't all "Cambridge University is Stalinist!" and had the most detail: www.varsity.co.uk/news/22393

The article didn't link the comedians performance or what was said, but on face it I do think it is strange the suggestion is you can't skewer fascism with an impression of one of the most famous ones.

So this is where we are then, right. I mean you could replace the word trans with homosexual and suddenly people would be up in arms. Good to see they've fallen back to the classic 'legitimate concerns' trope.
