I've just read the Guardian describe True Lies as repugnant. I watched it a few months back and some of it is crazy wrong minded. His mate talks about Harry's (Arnie) teenage daughter like a fucking creep throughout the movie. I mean it's based on a french comedy, so it's going to have some interesting flavour notes, but actually a lot of the weird misogynist stuff was all James Cameron riffing. |

It's weird how creepy some of True Lies is (I can deal with the comedy terrorists - I mean, come on, Cameron did have a token good swarthy guy).
Sure, Tom Arnold was off his face on coke and still fucking the walking MAGA hat Roseanne, but T2, Aliens and especially The Abyss have strong female characters for the time, although Cameron is guilty of the 'tough guy with a womb' school of imagining what a strong female actually is.
The whole Harry exploiting his wife to see how far she'll go is pretty sleazy, despite how much personally I appreciate Jamie Lee doing her dancing (cough).

That reminds me of good old racist Michael Crichton getting pissed off when they cast Wesley Snipes in the film version of Rising Sun, because, at that time, the LA police had never had a special services liaison who was black, and hence it was 'unrealistic'.
The novel is a massive racist rant anyhoo, but Crichton showed that he was a particularly extra pernickety type of racist on top of that.
