It's just a time honoured tradition used by climbers and hikers to ensure that they don't get lost.
It's actually the basis of Hansel and Gretel leaving breadcrumbs to mark their trail. Originally they'd leave little plops, but over time this was cleaned up and replaced with breadcrumbs. Thanks, Disney.
