Agree with most of that, but would definitely avoid 'more magistrates' as the answer. At least in their current form. They have no legal qualifications and the only criteria for the role is showing you've done some volunteer work in the community.
As a defendant, I'd prefer to take my chances with twelve randoms (directed by a professional judge) than a bored middle class retiree* who's watched some episodes of law and order.
*I will add that they are generally very nice and well meaning people

Chopsen Inclined to agree tbh. There's no way you can put together an unbiased jury for the more emotionally charged trial, and as you say, people are idiots by and large.

In their current form like you say magistrates are just bored middle class pensioners. But then again, at they have usually done it at least once before. Your typical juries are partaking their first rodeo, having never even watched one before.
Having dealt with the public all my working life, I genuinely don't know which I'd prefer as a defendant out of those two options. At least there was *some* scrutiny and effort put in to their appointment. At least they want to be there.

Though seriously, that's pretty fucked. I don't know who you'd blame in this circumstance, it's not like a venue that booked far over capacity.
