Ah fair, the way the commentators go on about him I keep expecting something electric. As I never really watch the Premiership. He's very solid under the high ball, which for some people that seems to be the only job of a fullback. But he just catches it and runs relatively slowly into traffic. He can kick it far but I didn't notice him particularly manipulating anything. I'd expect a fullback to also have footwork, speed, some skills at distributing etc. Yknow like Ramos showed, or Hogg or Keenan or Barrett. It's all very Halfpenny, Mike Brown era fullback.
Also fair - from what I've seen of him, he's by no means a flair player. Just a solid workhorse type in the Brown mould.

Just curious as to whether bringing Farrell on was tactical, or just because he’s a fucking comfort blanket for every coach of the last decade. I couldn’t watch it or listen here, just the text updates on BBC which are pretty awful at the best of times

If you want to point the finger then JvP, Ludlam, Dombrandt were particularly bad, Slade and JvP kicked away good ball and the bench might as well have stayed there.

Slade was no worse than any other player (bar I'd say Itoje and mayyyyybe Willis, who both tried to get involved at least) in the first half. He shot out of the line to make the first French try and we were fucked from then, so if I was being harsh I'd pin the momentum of the first half hour on him.
I think you're right that Smooth Bongwater wanted Farrell to steady things but that was about 54mins in iirc. The game was long gone (and we had Makold and Cole yet to arrive...) and we shipped another hat trick of tries after that.
I've not seen the post match chatter. If it's anything other than "I really fucked up" then we're in Emperor's New Clothes territory all over again. The team was shell shocked after 2mins, the pack were battered everywhere and it left the backs trying to force everything in every play.
Plus Maxwell Keys is the literal reincarnation of Steve Walsh and blew us off of the ball whenever he could. Not that it mattered, but he is a terrible - borderline French - ref, and a cunt.

So today's game, obviously hoping for a win against the odds at Murrayfield. But honestly anything other than a shaming, and I'll be fine with it really. If we come out of the tournament saying well we went toe to toe with the best 2 teams in the world and made their lives difficult but got bonus points against everyone else, that's fairly good for Scotland standards. Though it is just our luck to be doing our best when the top 2 teams are in the 6N. Rather than doing it in 2021 when Wales won the jam-slam and everyone was a bit mediocre.
