Forbidden Siren is good too, if you have the patient of a saint, and a walkthrough handy.
Echo Night for the PS1 is an interesting game as well, not very survival but I guess it does count as horror. But the USA version commands a ridiculous price today. And the PS2 threequel too, though I've not played it myself (Echo Night 2 on the PS1 was never localized).

I wish there was a graphically scaled up version of alone in the dark, the new nightmare. It's about playable on the dreamcast but it's a good one for the upscale pile I reckon

Cursed Mountain is out on PC too, although may have been delisted now as it used to be on Gamersgate but isn't now. Not actually played my PC one to see how well it works with normal controls
Kuon was reasonable from the bit I played (about half of first character I would guess)
As for Forbidden Siren, the sequel is a lot more user friendly and still good. The PS3 reimagining of 1 is a bit weaker in atmosphere than the original but does have 2's gameplay improvements (hampered a bit by its weird episodic format).

The average Song of Horror experience Game: want to examine this random object? Me: sure! Game: oh no, you died. *two hours later* Game: wnat to examine another random object? Me: hell no! Game: fine, suit yourself then. *two hours later* Game: oh no, you died. If only you had examined that random object earlier... I feel bad, but I think I am done with Song of Horror. I was really enjoying the atmosphere and exploration, but the instant perma-death is just too frustrating. I am down to my last character on the first chapter. One of them died for looking out of a window, one died because there was nowhere for him to hide nearby, one died for opening a door at the wrong time. I am now down to the old man with the hip flask and I really don't like the look of him.

ienjoysquid you can play on the lowest difficulty level, that will remove the permadeath and add checkpoints. But it will also lower the enemy encounters rate. And I'd argue that most of the reason why the game feels tense is because of the permadeath. So maybe it would be better to just drop it instead.

He lasted literally 3 minutes. I walked into a new area. I was asked if I wanted to investigate something. I said yes and he instantly died. I've uninstalled it now as I don't want to go back to exploring the house from the beginning. I might go back to it one day and try on an easier difficult. Shame as there's a lot to like but the (for me) unfair deaths are too much of a turnoff.

Been playing Soma and really enjoying the atmosphere and story of it. It may not be for everyone with it’s pretty simple gameplay though.

Finished setting up my little retro station upstairs last night so along with Silent Hill 4 on the PS2 I've fired up FEAR on the 360 (and maybe FEAR 2). Also got hold of FEAR Files as never owned that. Think I'm about halfway through SH4 and I forgot how unnerving the twin victims are. When you spy them in the distance, they are just motionless, pointing right at you. Got the PS3 setup as well which I have SH1 on, so may also pop that on. Toying with putting some money aside for SH Origins on the PS2 as it's quite pricey and would quite like it for my collection, although I'm not sure it's worth it. FEAR was the game that got me back into PC gaming. Ever since that game, kids in horror movies etc give me the absolute fucking creeps. SH:O is very much 'ok', IMO. If it's expensive these days I'd personally pass, but if it's for a collection you'll probably get it eventually anyway so eh, why not?

When it comes to paying out for older games, especially when they get expensive it's a difficult call to make.
Nobody can predict what Konami will do with their back catalogue, they've released Contra and Castlevania collections digitally in the last few years but I think there are technical reasons why Suikoden and Silent Hill collections are off the table.
Prior collections are using dumps from the original games within an emulation shell front end. The tech to do that for 32 Bit generation and beyond isn't so solid and therefore takes time and money something that current Konami would rather avoid. We already know that the state of preservation and documentation for their games is pretty bad, sometimes they probably don't have full final source code.
Getting individual games working in an emulation shell is one thing, I just don't see them doing an entire collection, especially when the expectation is there that games will need wide screen mode etc. If they do an individual game it's going to be Silent Hill 2 not Origins.

They already butchered the SH Collection, I don't think they are gonna try again.
That said, they have re-released a bunch of old games on GOG recently, so that at least shows they might still have some interest in their old catalogue.

It is a shame we haven't got something like a SH collection to download but I'm sure there's a reason.
As to SH: Origins. I'm not sure. Part of me is willing to take the risk knowing that I can presmably sell it for the same down the line, but I kind of do want to have it to "own" it as well. I'll keep mulling it over.
Meantime I think I'm the furthest in SH4 I've ever got. Got Eileen tagging along now and I'm back in the subway.

I don't know if you've consulted a Silent Hill 4 guide, but the Eileen escort mission make a difference at the end. If she takes a lot of damage you're at a disadvantage later. Keep a save from the start of that section just in case.

That's good to know. So far don't think she's taken much damage but I have a feeling it's early days.

The state of your apartment also affects the ending. It's a bastard. I got the worst ending and couldn't be arsed to do it all again. Hated the escort part
Origins in a solid SH. if you liked Downpour and the other one, it's better than those. I'd definitely advise researching Shattered Memories before laying down any serious money for it. It messes with the original story in some weird ways (not good ones). It's a reimagining of the first game so you're not missing much

I've been putting candles down in the apartment but I put one in the wrong place and it's annoying me. I've just wasted it. Need more candles.

The PS5 version of Visage is out today.
Fuck it. I'm going back to it.
Also, I'm dicking around in SH: Downpour (I started a new play last year and got distracted by the PS5 launch), and I still think it's a massively underrated game.

I delved into my long-neglected backlog and pulled out Soma. It’s… pretty good? Nice world building and atmosphere. A bit light on actual gameplay though; the simplistic monsters and navigation sections really outlive there welcome. Still, the mystery is a good one and I’m invested enough to find out what happens.

I'm playing amnesia DD on the switch. I have to say in portable with headphones I am having a brilliant time. What a masterclass in building atmosphere and suspense it is. (Realise I'm a bit late to the party here)

I only got as far as the monsters and then, no. I did finish A Machine For Pigs but I didn't think there were any enemies in that. Pricks

Looking back at a great decision; Capcom wondered why they weren't making as much money as they expected in the 2000s which lead to some turmoil later on.
Six Silent Hill games. Four of those were native, two ports, of those ports one was a spin-off.
In comparison to a massive series like Resident Evil...
Six Resident Evil games. Two ports. Four native games, all the native games were lower budget spin-offs with the Gun Survivor games in particular being of questionable quality.
At that time Nintendo professed that it 'was an honour' to make games for a Nintendo platform that's why Nintendo charged publishers more to release games on their platform. Unfortunately shareholders can't cash in honour, there were at least seven Playstation 2 consoles for every single Gamecube out there in the World and you didn't publish a single native entry in the Resident Evil series on the market leading platform? Capcom went and did a Sega, never go full Sega.

Turns out - despite having The Persistence on my "to buy" list - I didn't realise it was included in last months PS+ offering as one of the extra VR games. What was even better was when I added it to my library, I checked on the enhanced version (which goes a long way to making it perfectly playable as a non-VR game, as well as adding a few bells and whistles for PS5) and was able to upgrade to that.
Had a quick look last night. It's fairly decent. It's a bit System Shocky and I love the setting (abandoned ship orbiting a black hole). It's also a bit of a rogue-lite jobber, with the ship reconfiguring itself every time you die.
