Re: Stray Souls. The steam reviews are hilarious. I'm in genuine awe that they shipped the game like this, although when big studios can release shit like Colonial Marines or Cyberpunk in a rough as fuck way, then smaller devs don't stand a chance. It's hard to know if they genuinely thought they were shipping a good game (and their promo run up and the fact they were urging people to stream it makes me think it IS a genuine effort at releasing something good) or whether they are taking the piss.

My interest in Stray Souls hasn't diminished at all.
Sometimes you've just got to take a chance on a wildcard, I've bought a few this year. If you want to play it safe and get exactly what you're expecting for your money AAA and first party stuff is there for that mostly.
I've been meaning to post my thoughts on my recent wildcard purchase, I actually ended up liking it a fair bit despite the jank.

In all fairness I'm normally VERY forgiving. I have no doubt I'll still get something from it despite the jank. If there are any AI fixes and glitch tweaks then it would certainly help. The monster death animation is very amusing as well mind you. They basically pop in a tiny red cloud. I'm going to see it through regardless.

Dreadout 2
Our protagonist is Linda Meilinda. It’s a bit like Mario Mario. We begin at school disheveled and barefoot hiding in a cupboard, from media at least I’ve always got the impression that school bullying in Asian Countries is pretty hardcore, these are bullies with a work ethic. Besides a helpful whiteboard message telling us to die, downstairs they’ve actually gone to the trouble of working some folk magic, creating an effigy, even a grave for Linda. Your school bag and belongings are in a smouldering heap down in the courtyard.
The following day after escaping school I was unsure if events so far had actually happened. Things had returned to relative normalcy but it's not long before there’s a Silent Hill style transition to a corrupted version of the school. After a gore soaked odyssey we escape and reappear back in the class looking like we’ve been crawling around an abattoir floor. So these things are happening after all?
This gets you a three month school suspension and nice long chat with the police. Winking out of existence and reappearing drenched in blood, typical school delinquent behaviour. The I’m cursed and supernatural beings did it explanation never works. Still wearing bloodstained clothes your landlady sends you off to hospital. It doesn’t take a great mind to guess what happens next. Dreadout now adds Clocktower style elements to the Fatal Frame and Silent Hill with a hiding mechanic which sees you hiding in expected places like cupboards but also diving into mangled piles of corpses and hopping onto gurneys and hiding under the sheet nestled against a corpse. I find Linda’s lack of hesitation when it comes to hiding in places most people would refuse to go anywhere near rather amusing.
Dreadout feels more like a PS2 era horror game than anything else I’ve played since that era ended. It’s strange to see Indonesian indie devs putting out something like this, twenty years after the highpoint of J-Horror in films and games, I guess improvements in tools mean that smaller teams can makes things that were previously impossible.
The one concession to modernity is some heavy handed streamlining, Linda operates in two distinct modes, when Dreadout wants to be more like Fatal Frame she will hold her phone in her right hand and the phone will be her only form of defence. When the game wants to be a bit more Silent Hill the phone is in the left hand in a support role whilst the right holds a melee weapon. These two modes even have their own distinct camera behaviour, you have no control over this, Dreadout decides how you play each section. In the ‘real’ World you use the phone to take pictures and defend yourself against ghosts. When you transition to the spirit World the phone stuns enemies for a moment but you are helpless until you get a melee weapon. The hospital section introduces a hiding mechanic but then it’s taken away for the rest of the game.
You have an inventory but it’s just there for you to check on puzzle related items such as keys etc. There are no health recovery items, no health bar or any sort of status indicator. Your only indication that death is imminent is Linda getting bloody and moving more slowly.
I’d namedrop Yakuza too, we get some sections of Indonesian town to walk around and it’s rather reminiscent of Yakuza but there’s not really much to do, I only found one ‘sidequest’. It occurs to me that I know very little about Indonesia, if Dreadout is any indication bombing down the road on mopeds trying to run Linda over is incredibly popular.
All in all I really enjoyed my time with Dreadout 2, there’s plenty to nitpick regarding jank and graphical issues but I can forgive it for that faint echo of J-Horror vibe. You have to be incredibly careful when the game gives you a cue that a ghost is around, they can totally stun-lock you in a corner, you learn to stop making that mistake fast and take a few hits over fleeing into a spot from which you can’t escape.
Highly recommended, I picked my copy up as an import, I believe all the versions support English.

My original plan for spooky season 23 was to play a game representing each main, movie monster archetype.
This actually turned out to be really hard. Zombies are easy, games featuring vampires and ghosts aren't too hard to find. But unless you settle for a Castlevania game which takes a pick n' mix approach, which isn't really what I was looking for, I just couldn't fill out a reasonably complete roster.
Are there any games that feature Mummies as the prominent enemy? Hold on... Is a mummy a zombie? Not a question to be taken lightly. I still recall an absolute shit show, legendary flame war on a Metal Slug thread regarding that very topic.
The slasher could be represented by one of the Friday the 13th games, but what about the Werewolf and the Creature from the Black Lagoon archetype? The last Resident Evil has werewolves but I just don't want to touch that one, it's in first person. Unclean! Unclean! There is a Frankenstein game but it's a Castlevania clone so pick n' mix again.

Oh Mummy (for a game with mummies)
There's some Werewolf the Apocalypse games or you could play Vampire Bloodlines as a Gangrel - two for one
The Sinking City has a sea monster
You can play Resi 8 in third person if you get the expansion

So WORLD OF HORROR is finally out. It's a roguelike... point and click adventure? Something like that? With eldritch monstrosities and knockoff Junji Ito art.
I'm definitely intrigued, for the Junji Ito if nothing else. That stuff gives me the scaries.

Okay we've got some games I didn't consider or know about there, I own Sinking City, I don't recall if any enemies conform to the Creature from the Black Lagoon archetype, a classic example would be the guys who jump out of the water in the original Castlevania... But I just remembered Sinking City features a South American Mummy as a prominent enemy/character. Mummy sighting confirmed! And it's the ultra rare non-bandaged variety.
Silent Hill 2 could also count for the slasher, Pyramid Head definitely conforms to that archetype and is a constant presence throughout the game.

It looks pretty interesting, I'm just loving the recent resurgence in indie titles.

I'm definitely intrigued, for the Junji Ito if nothing else. That stuff gives me the scaries. It's a semi-roguelike structured a bit like a tabletop RPG. Can't think of many games like it. But it can be quite hard. Even on the lowest difficulty, you are not guaranteed to get to the end until you learn some decent combat tactics. On the default difficulty, I only managed to complete the game once, and only because of some lucky rolls. I liked it though, definitely worth the price. Need to get back to it now they have added more content.

I finally finished the PS3 version of Splatterhouse, it's been years, I started from scratch four times, I'd normally get to phase 2 and give up.
Coming out of development Hell and so close to being scrapped it really does feel thrown together from scraps and floor sweepings. I almost switched the music vol. to zero for the entire game, Splatterhouse doesn't really have a soundtrack, 90% is generic, grating metal thrown in with no consideration for context or mood, but for short periods you'd get one lonely track that actually sounds like it belongs in a Spatterhouse game so I relented.
Splatterhouse emulating God of War could have worked, but not by ignoring the rules that actually make it work, the camera needed to be either fixed or locked to a plane, you can't have all these camera movements in the middle of crowd control battles, attacking right then have the camera shift that behind you. It's no accident that this style of game really cheats, Kratos swung chains, Dante (Dante's Inferno) used a massive scythe, Bayonetta has sweeping kicks and guns that lock-on to everything, all of these attacks have absolutely massive hit boxes because aiming attacks can be hit and miss when the camera is fixed and often pulled back. If this is what we got, I'd rather they'd ripped off God Hand or Onimusha, or made a Darkest Dungeon style RPG.
They couldn't even get the style right, Splatterhouse is what I'd call VHS era horror, birthed from the primordial soup of dodgy, video nasty VHS cassettes changing hands in grimy rental shops. Watch all the Evil Dead films, Friday the Thirteenth and other slasher horrors of that period, a selection of 70s and 80s Italian horror from Argento and Fulci and finally finish with Reanimator now you've absorbed a good portion of the material that inspired the original.
For a minute or two here and there, Splatterhouse feels right. Otherwise the director was taking things elsewhere, clueless about or resistant to what Namco actually wanted them to make. The soundtrack really hurts, the original Splatterhouse has an amazing soundtrack inspired by those aforementioned Italian horror films, it's delightful stuff that evokes moods for each stage and event. No! Chuck that old stuff in the trash! Get with the times. This game is metal. This game needs metal with vocals that sound like a dog getting it's balls dragged along a cheese grater, what evokes the mood of this event? You know the answer. Lyrics that go ruhhhh! Rrrruhhhhhh! Rruuuuuuuuhhh! Perfect.
Trimming the six to eight hour play time to just three, keeping all the best stuff and dumping the rest along with the Ill considered music would have made the game a far better experience. I'd class Splatterhouse alongside games like Knights Contract, there's some interesting horror imagery but you really have to go through an ordeal to get to there.

It sure takes some acquired taste to say there was something good in Knights Contract!
Even if the game was definitely rushed, to go from Majin to that... I don't know how Game Republic did it.

Knights Contract is kind of mysterious. Why are the designs for the main character and partner witch so ridiculous and a complete eyesore, but in the same game the designs for some enemies are really interesting, imaginative and creepy? What was going on with the priorities Game Republic?
Those sorts of questions keep me up at night.
But really, Knights Contract has some interesting art in there like the colossal Storm Witch, it doesn't really get pigeonholed as a 'horror' game like Shadows of the Damned and Neverdead do for some reason, probably because most people are making an effort to forget it exists at all.

Somehow I forced myself to finish it, and then decided to forget about it too.
I don't think Namco is going to remaster that anytime soon. I do wish they would remaster Majin though. One of the best games from the 360 gen imo.

With Splatterhouse gone, the pile of PS3 horror Poo-Poo that I need to finish is down to just a few games.
Vampire Rain where I'm stuck at a really annoying boss battle. It's been so long since I last played, all the muscle memory will be gone, my chances against a boss are slim.
Alone in the Dark, which is supremely annoying throughout, just a couple more chapters to go but I don't think I can do it without the assistance of alcohol to dull the pain.
Dante's Inferno, not poo at all, I remember taking the piss out of it a bit when it released, but it's actually pretty worthwhile with lots of interesting enemy designs and things to see. That's what I like about horror, the imagination doesn't need to be shackled to reality. Sure, let's just take a trip through hell. I've been saving this for last as something to take the bad aftertaste away.
I don't fancy the boss battle, so today I'll try to finish up Alone in the Dark. Pray for me.

I think I dropped it somewhere near a boss fight after a truly painful driving sequence.

Alone in the Dark is finally done and dusted. Anybody considering it, know what you're getting yourself into. A miserable experience throughout, it never hits it's stride it never gets better.
Somebody was really proud of the fire, right analogue stick object waving and spaghetti rope physics. They throw down a gauntlet of puzzles and traversal heavily featuring them right at the end. I was stuck on one puzzle where the time limit was ridiculous, what with having to fight against the controls all the way, I finally pass it... And the game crashed. It turns out checkpoints are 'soft' saves and the game only properly saves at the end of episodes. Hours of progress, where I'd been forced to go around burning roots to hit a high enough percentage before I could proceed. All gone.
I very nearly broke the disc in two. This, right at the end of the game. Fortunately Alone in the Dark has one pretty unique feature, you can start at any checkpoint you want in any episode. I just skipped right to just before it crashed, solved the puzzle again, got through the last couple of horrible sections and that was it.
Just in case anybody was wondering, the PS3 exclusive section in this supposedly 'improved' version of the game is dreadful too. I don't know how they made a train set-piece so bad.
Scenario: You're in a semi-destroyed subway station. Initially you just have to clear an obstacle and get a train moving (right through a massive tunnel blockage that magically disappears when the game wants it gone. This triggers a massive eldritch horror to appear and start chasing the train. You're prompted to fight it with explosions and the game spawns in bottles of flammable liquid and other stuff just for this section. But where did it all come from? It definitely wasn't there a minute ago when I walked the empty train before starting up. When a game is this bad, major continuity errors are barely noticeable.
By the way. Alone in the Dark is lying. You can fight with explosions as much as you want, you will only pass this section if you exactly follow the 'script'. The game won't tell you what the script is though, it's like you're an actor in a film trying to ad-lib your way through scenes.
I'll try and explain how bad this game can control and feel. You need to throw bottles of flammable liquid at the horror and shoot them in front of it's face, this will only knock the horror back. What you're actually doing is buying yourself time... But not really.
When you throw the bottles you also need be standing in the 'correct' spot, there is no indication, you just get punished with splash damage and the loose bottles at your feet blowing you up. This is the only point in the game where you get splash damage from thrown explosives. It's something special, just for right now, just for you. You learn by dying, again and again.
The horror gets an explosion in the face, you've bought yourself 15-20 seconds to run down the opposite end of the carriage to the next car. If you're quick, you may think you've got a spare 10 seconds to play with. Wrong. Alone in the Dark now does some time rubber-banding and the horror, having read the script appears at the end of the train and derails the last car. Now you need those 15-20 seconds back again, another explosion in the horror's face, you're under constant time pressure and Carnby feels so clumsy and slow, I think it's because no other encounter requires you to do 180º turns. To increase the pressure the script throws hazards into the carriages, eating into your 15-20 seconds as you work your way down the train, with each carriage you leave getting destroyed.
Finally you reach a dead end, you now have to go outside and run along the carriage roof, you still need to keep 'resetting the timer' on the horror if he reaches the train and enough time elapses before you either bomb him or escape the end carriage, instant game over.
By the way, this game is very dark, the very first time I didn't even realise there was no more train and walked right off the front to my death. Okay, what does the script want me to do now? There's no more train, you'll eventually run out of bottles and can't repel the horror any longer. If at any point you die, you will start this sequence again from the very beginning.
You'll probably do a fair bit of dying. There's a hatch on the last carriage, the 'script' needs you to shoot the four retaining bolts and get back inside. Why? Because the script says so. Each bolt takes two shots, just for extra fun. Why does Carnby turn so bloody slow?
Get to last carriage. Bomb horror in face. Shoot bolt. Shoot bolt. Turn excruciatingly slowly, bomb horror in face to buy some more time. Turn back to hatch, slowly oh, so slowly. Shoot bolt. Reload. Shoot bolt. slowly turn, bomb horror in face again. Slowly turn back, drop into the carriage.
What do I do? What do I do? You pick up one last bottle from the floor. The horror has torn the end off the train like it's an old can. All I have is this bottle. This one final explosion kills the horror. Why? Because the script says it will. What? You thought you were fighting an enemy? Knocking down their health? No, you were following a script you weren't allowed to see.
Alone in the Dark is a bad game.

It's like they knew the game sucked ass and wanted to give people an easy way out. By the way, if you still haven't had enough of crappy horror games stuck on last-last-gen consoles, you could give AMY a try. It's not as bad as AITD, but... well, yeah, almost. The controls at least are almost as bad. Again, I gave up around halfway through. or perhaps before even that.

Started the Dead Space remake. Got about one hour in last night. It's so very unapologetically 360 gen, which makes the Resident Evil 4 vibes all that much more obvious.
Shame about the PC port. It should run great on 1080p High and FSR2 Quality, but the FSR2 looks horrendous in this game, so I've decided to just settle on 1080p Medium with TAA instead, which does push my GPU a lot harder but at least 60fps is still easily within reach (unless things get worse in the open spaces later on, we'll see). More annoying is the occasional heavy stutter. I guess all that shader building at the start wasn't enough.

I thought it looked really good on ps5, atmosphere is still great too.
I cant imagine fiddling with graphic settings these days. Even with pc games most have an auto detect option, so I always do that.

Yes, the autodetect option gives me Medium settings, but like I said, I have to keep TAA because FSR2 looks pretty ass in this game (for some reason it doesn't seem to take into account 2D elements, so the UI is ghosting like crazy). In the end, without FSR2, I noticed that even ultrawide 1080p Medium can be difficult to bear in hectic situations, so I've settled for 990p. I don't care that much for the resolution, I'd rather have good performance and a stable framerate as often as possible. Besides, the forced TAA makes it pointless to try and keep native resolution anyway.
Also I got another couple hours in today. It's been too long since I played the original, so I can't really tell what's been changed, aside from Isaac now suddenly having a voice.
