I've been in the mood for shorter games recently, (shorter by modern standards at least) and rapidly exhausting the supply of unplayed horror/survival horror games. Then I remember that I got right to the final boss of Resident Evil Revelations before putting it on the backburner.
But my RE: Revelations save was gone. No problem, I'll start again. This time I'll really be paying attention when it tries to teach me how to use the dodge mechanic and I won't keep getting hit by the final boss.
I could definitely trigger the dodge mechanic by accident fairly regularly, I couldn't do it consistently when I needed it though. A dodge mechanic mapped to the same stick you're already using to move around unsurprisingly turns out to be hit and miss, anything requiring precise timing should never be mapped to a stick.
But the benefit of starting again knowing what was at the end of the game meant I could resort to other methods... RE: Revelations gives you one and only one single shot rocket launcher in the entire campaign for use in a particular area where you run a gauntlet of enemies against a time limit. I get through without using it, then swapped it out with a gun to take back to the item box for later. On my first attempt at the boss the rocket launcher definitely hurt him but an onslaught of attacks I was mostly failing to dodge eventually resulted in a game over.
Attempt number two, this time I hold back and wear him down first, even with the boss getting hits in it's not difficult to do enough damage to trigger a pause where he drops to one knee exposing a massive pustule on his back, rocket launcher time. I felt a little disappointed at how easily he died, being a Resident Evil game I was incredibly wary of a scene triggering and the boss coming back even more pissed off and mutated and now I don't have the rocket launcher but he just stayed dead. The end, I spit on your dodge mechanic Re: Revelations.
Definitely not a bad game but severely flawed, if I was ranking 3rd person Resident Evil games, Revelations would be right at the bottom. I just can't understand how the idea spread that this was the 'traditional' Resident Evil for fans who thought RE: 6 had strayed a bit too far. Are you kidding? Revelations is just as much, if not more of an action game than RE: 6. It has two on-rails turret shooter sections, swamps you with mobs of enemies. Remember how formidable and menacing just a few hunters are in the first game? in Revelations you gun down mobs of them, about the only thing you can say it has in terms of survival horror credentials over Re: 6 is that dead enemies don't directly drop ammunition, but it has two boss encounters with seemingly infinite enemy spawns which is a terrible mechanic for a survival horror game, if you don't know beforehand, any bullet expended on anything that's not the boss is being wasted.
Would still recommend for the weird, slightly cringe-inducing campaign that ends in a sequel hook that got entirely ignored in the sequel. The Raid mode is good but you're better off getting Revelations 2 for the massively expanded and far better raid mode there.

I think it's just the sections with Jill that are considered more of a throwback. It's definitely a game of two halves I really like the ship setting and the waterlogged corpse zombie things are a really cool (gross) design. That boss on the primenade is terrifying I also really like Jill's costume

Amnesia: The Bunker is on GamePass. It’s pretty bloody scary: your primary light source is a wind-up torch. Noise attracts the beast.

Daymare 1998 has a sequel/prequel Daymare 1994 coming out in August.
Lest we forget, Daymare was the original Resident Evil 2 Remake but partway through Capcom started production on a remake of their own, Capcom were pretty nice about it though, especially in comparison to reactions you typically see from Nintendo and Square Enix when fans make games.
It was probably for the best, a Resident Evil 2 Remake was incredibly ambitious for a small team of fans and Daymare had um... Lots of room for improvement. Maybe a followup will give us just that. I've so starved for third person horror games I'll consider anything, it seems at least 80-90% of horror games are first person these days, which are not my cup of tea.
I was surprised Daymare is getting a followup since barely anybody seemed to have bought it, perhaps nearly all the Amazon reviews being in Italian indicates they've got their own local horror game scene and they bought enough copies for all of us. It makes sense, the Remothered games were also an Italian project and the italian giallo horror genre was an important influence for horror games.

I did try Daymare but it was just a bit TOO cumbersome. The whole reloading mechanic was just obtuse for the sake of it.
Reminds me, I have both Remothered games, need to give them a shot.

I ended up finding my PS4 copy of RE: Revelations that I was originally looking for when I wanted to play Revelations so I decided I better play it again now, otherwise the money spent on the PS4 version was completely wasted.
Second time around the story and character motivations still don't make much sense, even by RE standards, but I had a better time with everything still fresh in my mind, I even managed to kill the final boss the normal way.
Digital Foundry time. Yes, it looks better... Kind of. They'd say it's more 'refined' in the rendering of elements like enemies perhaps, but I don't think that necessarily makes it better than the PS3 version. There's a bit more to horror games than just raw numbers graphical fidelity.
Next, I'm looking for my Japanese copy of the original Silent Hill (yes, at one point I was collecting every version of certain games. Kind of sad, I know.) I'm no longer sure if I own it or it's a false memory at this point. I was absolutely certain I own a boxed complete copy of Paper Mario 64, I've been looking for it off an on over the last few months though and it's nowhere to be found. Now I'm starting to wonder if I ever owned it.

Tried this creepy game by ex-FEAR devs called Betrayer, it's fairly old Unreal 3 based tech but the stark black and white presentation is still quite striking and gave me some real Dead Man vibes. It's currently free on GOG and well worth a go.

A bit on the easy side, even when played at the highest difficulty, but it has been an especially nice tribute to the classic survival horror games I grew up with (BIOHAZARD entries that predate 4, Silent Hill, etcetera…), so, I still highly recommend it. Comes with multiple endings, too. EDIT: I have one small complain about this game, though. I played the PS4 version and, well, interactions with doors and ladders have been annoying, more specifically, the on-screen prompts which allow to open/climb them either didn't appear when they should have (requiring the character to backstep a bit), or disappeared way too fast. They don't make the game unplayable, of course, but these issue are likely to show up during playthrough.
For those that don't feel like checking the official website: "SIGNALIS is now available for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. It is also currently available in Game Pass and the Humble Games Collection."

Is the Alien Isolation DLC any good? The game on its own is on sale at the moment but if the DLC is worth it, I can wait for the collection to go on sale

Okay fine. I'll type out what I thought I had typed out before and what it turned out I didn't type out.
I bought it all and bounced off it. It was more of the same, but with a time limit and - I felt at least - a far more aggressive alien. It could be becuase after one play of the main game I was more burned than I thought, but I never felt inclined to keep going at them.
If it's peanuts and you fancy having a gander, go for it. Or if you loved the main game so much that you just want MOAR, then go for it. Otherwise, like me, you might just feel that you can't be bothered.

Actually, have you not played the main game yet? If not, just get that on it's own. I honestly don't think you'll feel inclined to go straight into the DLC anyway. It's a good 16 - 18 hours as it is.

Summer and other big games have had it take a back seat. I've gotten into the groove, but I am a big puss when it comes to these first-person ones so everything is taken extra slowly. I left it with my character backed into a room, with a campbed blocking the doorway while 'it' prowled around outside. I suspect I will need to take a peep and cause a distraction.
---
I saw a game called Layers of Fear had been remade and reviewed well. It seems cheap enough for a Steam key, but it's another that will need to wait until the nights get longer.

I bought The Bunker around the same time as the new Layers of Fear. Finished The Bunker but after getting midway through LoF I too parked it for the darker nights. I'll get back into it again soon. It's not as good as The Bunker but it's a graphically impressive game with some very cool moments, so it's definitely worth it if you see it cheaper. I'm going to get into that, back into RE4 as well as a few other horror jobbies I have installed. it's just been too light to even attempt them. That's the only good thing about the nights drawing in. More horror.

I knew you'd come through for me in the end
I've only played a bit of the start and then stopped. Definitely not because I was scared
I think it's about 7 or 8 quid (assuming it's still on sale) so will probably bag it as a I hate time limits anyway
Nearing the end of Prey now so I might pop this on after that for some more space scares

Sorry to trouble you again wunty dear, does The Bunker have the resource management and sanity stuff like The Dark Descent? And do you need to have played Rebirth?

If it includes (and I think it does) the two short Nostromo bits, then it's prob worth grabbing for that, just to hear the original (albeit aged) cast and fart about on the Nostromo for a bit. Maybe this year will be the year I'll have another wing of the DLC. It's a fucking brilliant game either way.

Sorry to trouble you again wunty dear, does The Bunker have the resource management and sanity stuff like The Dark Descent? And do you need to have played Rebirth? All the Amnesia games link together but tbh I can't remember what the fuck happened in TDD, never played AMfP and only started Rebirth after I played The Bunker. Safe to say whilst connected, they are all standalone enough so that they can be "enjoyed" individually.
Resource management - fuck yes. Down to the fact that there is a finite amount of fuel for the generator and if that's out, you're in darkness for the remainder of your playthrough. You could use the torch but fuck that as it brings big boi down on you like a ton of bricks with teeth. I barely used anything in fact. Just inched my through through the game with a great big brown turtlehead sticking out my bum the entire time. I died. A lot.
Bloody amazing though. Was it as stressful as Alien? Yes. In fact, I think moreseo. It's a proper fucking horror game.
Edit: No sanity effects though. it would have been unplayable I think given that you spend more time in the dark here than the other games. There are some effects when angrychap sees you but nothing when you're just fannying around in the dark.
Oh, and if you didn't hate rats before. You will.

It's a grim experience. One or two parts in particular basically had me wanting to put it off and never fire it up again when I knew what I had to do. There was one section that I went about 20 mins between saves for what was the most intense bit of horror gaming I'd ever done, trying to make it to one location and back again with no light, numerous obstacles in my way, and mr tickles throwing his weight around the place. If I fucked up at any point it was back to my last save. The relief when I got back was... Oh man.
it's such a small game in terms of physical locations, but it works so well. You constantly have to nip about the place, trying to think about where he's coming from, blocking up holes or making traps for him, all the while trying to stay quiet, remember the good hiding spots, trying not to aggro the rats, looking out for tripwires and other traps, checking your watch to make sure the power isn't going to suddenly fail mid way through and bricking it when you realise you aren't making it back in time.
I don't know if you can tell, but I liked it.

Man, I really need to play that game. I tried the demo but it seemed way too hard for me. But maybe I could give it another chance. Alien Isolation was nice, although sometimes it felt like the situation wasn't as dangerous as it should have been.

Probably just a matter of figuring out the rules.

Thomas Grip of Frictional (Twitter) talking about a design conflict: "1) I want complex, coherent gameplay. 2) I dislike grind, repetition and padding. 3) Complex play (seems to) require underlying economy of grind, repetition and padded content. Can one satisfy points 1 & 2, without invoking 3?"
Just thought it was interesting.
