God knows when I'll get around to playing it. Planning on Madison after Home Sweet Home. Got about 20 fucking horror games installed. At around an hour gaming a day tops that's...a long time scrambling in the dark with a flashlight.
Oh, I'll tell you what i actually surprisingly like as well which I mentioned previously. Paper Dolls. Did a bit of that too and has a wonderfully creepy atmosphere. Don't know if it fits the mansion bill per se but it's an old Chinese mansion house and there's a lot of puzzles and hunting for keys.

Oh and whilst not mansion related, Horror Tales: The Wine is meant to be quite good as well. Not on sale currently though.
Song of Horror as I mentioned previously is in an old mansion and has a more traditional RE look. Thing about that one is that you have 12 protagonists and when they are all dead it's game over for good!
Well, it's not *that* bad. The game is divided in chapters, so a game over just means you have to restart that chapter. Song of horror sounds interesting. Screenshots look pretty good too. Bit pricey though It was free on Amazon Prime a couple years back, if you have been redeeming games for a long time.

To clarify, each chapter gives you 3-4 characters to choose from. If a character dies during a chapter, they are dead for good and therefore won't be available in later chapters. But most of the times, they will be replaced by a new character anyway. I think there can be situations where, if you only have one survivor in a chapter, you get fewer available characters in the next one, which can be annoying (I got through a lot of characters, so in the final chapter I only had a choice of two). Still, you'll never be stuck with no characters at any point.
There is also the main character whom you absolutely have to keep alive, dying as him forces you to restart the chapter. But the game does explicitly tell you that, so it's merely a matter of keeping him for last (since if everybody dies, you have to restart the chapter anyway).
They also added an optional mode that removes permadeath, though I'd suggest avoiding it, since most of the tension comes from the fact that you are constantly risking death from random traps. And yeah, some of the random traps are indeed bullshit with no signposting whatsoever. But it was still a pretty fun and tense game imo.

Sounds cool though. Deffo on the list.
My horror odyssey continues! Home Sweet Home done, my views can be read in the recently completed thread if anyone gives a fuck.
Monstrum is on sale for a few quid. Anyone played that? May have to grab it.
Dabbled in Outlast last night. Reloaded my save from 2016 (!), was only a third into it! That's getting done, but first...
Not sure what to do next. Itchy to continue Madison, so may do that.
Right now these are the games I need to play. Something about empty places in the dark, only accompanied by ghosts whilst you read about traumtic shit that's happened to cause said ghosts. It's where my head needs to be be just now.

Not sure tbh. I only know Visage as well. I'm limited to what has appeared on console unfortunately. If I had PC I'd be bankrupt with the amount of horror on there.
Also you're right in that assumption. Visage is easily one of the outright scariest games I've played.

You know what else? Just because I'm in a rambling mood. But Outlast STILL looks pretty bloody decent considering how old it is now. Was quite surprised.

So disappointingly Madison isn't particularly scary. I think it's because there's no threat, or at least, none yet. It looks lovely and it's very cool but so far it's just a ghost train ride. I can't see wnything that could kill me. I think for scares to be truly effective, you've got to be presented with a threat. The ghosts in Visage can and will kill you, which makes them scarier.

Following my impossible run through the original Dead Space a while back I thought I'd do the same with Dead Space 2, we have two options. Zealot and hardcore, technically Zealot has the lowest item drops and hardest enemies, hardcore has zealot item drop rates and survivalist difficulty enemy encounters but will only allow you to save three times in the entire game with no checkpointing at all. That kind of intimidates me a bit, I'm pretty sure there's at least one quicktime event that can kill you, or maybe I'm remembering things wrong.
So zealot it is then... But I'm finding the game incredibly easy. Kinesis impaling enemies is completely overpowered and I have to regularly stop off at a shop to clear inventory space because the game is throwing so much ammo, health and stasis at me. Maybe hardcore mode is the way to go after all, with hours of progress on the line it might feel a bit more scary at least.
It looks like Dead Space 2 just didn't get a difficulty level worthy of being designated as hard, with impossible on the original you were just about hitting that tipping point where the game is starting to give you less back than you are putting in so you had to figure out ways of conserving ammunition and there were even a few fights where it was more economical to just spam stasis and avoid enemies. That's always been my problem with Resident Evil 4 and it's far reaching influence on horror games, once enemies start dropping ammunition there's no incentive to consider alternative strategies beyond exterminating absolutely everything that moves.

It turns out Dead Space 2 Zealot difficulty just starts out easy for the first 1/4 to 1/3 of the game, then it steps thing up significantly. I finally managed to get some use out of the ripper, but still have reservations, great for crowd control in tight spaces not so good when ranged attackers get thrown into the mix, standard fire can't reach them. Pausing to alt fire and deploy a new blade is not ideal when some zealot difficulty enemies can kill you in a fraction of a second.
The ripper is great when it comes to ammo conservation though, set things up and you can easily eliminate groups of necromorphs with a single blade, six to eight is feasible, with heavy use of stasis you can probably get into double figures. I had to backtrack to the store at the very end of the game which wasn't easy because I was having trouble with the final boss without the force gun so the ripper got substituted in the end.
Since I'm chickening out on the Dead Space 2 hardcore and I have the PS3 hooked up, I'll have to see if there is anything else I can finish up, sadly it's stuff like Vampire Rain and Alone in the Dark, I gave Splatterhouse another try last night, it's utterly repellent.

So Horror Tales: The Wine is down to a couple of quid on PSN. Worth grabbing at that price from what I hear. Song of Horror down to half price as well. tempted but I'll wait a week and see how I feel as it's still 16 quid. Maid of Sker is also cheap, don't know much about that. Tormented Souls is also half price. quadfather Am I right in saying you've played that?

Hang on, let me think.
Ah yes, I remember now. I really had to stop and think for a minute then.
Yes, I've played it for about 4 hours or so. Visually, we're talking resident evil - fixed camera angles and your standard controls, but not too tanky.
Movement is pretty good.
The monsters are bastards though. You can't steam roll through these fuckers. You have to plan your way through the rooms.
Also, it has a really gruesome start to the main protagonist.
It's good - I'll be going back to it.

I think I actually played the demo back when it came out and got mauled to death by the first monster!
It's on the list anyway so I'll have a think.
See you were asking about old mansions as settings. Maid of Sker looks like that as well. No combat though.
So many horror games.
I'm laughing as well because all I've managed to do so far is make it through Madison. I have tried Inflicted and got up to the first ghost encounter and put the fucking thing off as my nerves couldn't cope. I think I've got a bit carried away with my horror purchases. I'll never have the balls to get through them all. I really should start drinking again to numb the fear.

haha, nutter. Though I never play horror games sober, so I get you there.
I'll check Maid of Sker out - you mentioned that one before.
The Tormented Souls is definitely better than I thought it was going to be. It's almost a full on resi clone tbh

Just wanted to point out that Thomas Grip's twitter has been saying this recently:
"Creative Director at Frictional Games. Past: Penumbra, Amnesia & SOMA. Future: Unannounced Sci-Fi Game."
Just a little tidbit, but I was pleasantly surprised that Amnesia: The Bunker isn't that unannounced game that he has sometimes been talking about. I'm sure it will turn out fine, but I'm really more interested in weird, interesting, atmospheric settings than I am in purely just some kind of Horror game. I can only wonder how long they have been working on this "Sci-Fi Game".

Yeah I think I'll grab Song of Horror before it goes off sale. I'll never get around to playing it but that's not the point is it.
I got Maid of Sker too. What intrigued me about that is this challenge mode they added with guns. Thought it looked good for a laugh.
That said, TLOU has totally got me in it's grip just now so both of those games will be getting done first. I hardly ever replay stuff but Part I is wowing me all over again.

Playing through World of Horror again. Last time I played it when it was on Game Pass, but now I bought it because I had a pretty good time with it, and it's probably going to leave early access soon anyway so the price would increase. It's good fun, even if the content is not really that much. After a few playthroughs, there's already lots of repeat events. I'll need to try the timeline B though.
Story difficulty is super easy, while easy difficulty is still pretty manageable. Default difficulty can be quite hard, but I got a good roll this time around (a spell that lets you escape combat for the rest of the case without any penalty, for a pretty cheap cost) and managed to finish it.

Hmmm. Taking quick dips into Infliction and it's a bit of a let down. Think I'm around 2/3 of the way through and sadly it's just too janky to be actually scary. The character models are terrible, to the point of taking you right out the game. It's a shame as overall the atmosphere is decent and it does the whole PT thing quite well. However, when you're not actually scared of the ghosts, then it kind of makes the whole thing redundant.
I'll play through to the end but in my current rankings of recently played horror, it's well below Home Sweet Home and Madison, even though those games weren't perfect.

Tried the Amnesia Bunker demo for half an hour or so.
Compared to Rebirth, which looked more like a walking simulator for the most part (at least up to the point where I dropped it anyway), this seems very much a survival horror. In fact, much more than even the original game or Penumbra. Your only light source takes forever to charge up, will attract the monster, and lasts only a few scant seconds. You can keep a generator fueled up to turn on the lights, but its fuel drains very quickly, and I guess turning on the lights in multiple sections of the map will just drain it faster. And don't think you can play like Penumbra and keep the lights off at all times: good luck seeing anything in the dark. You have a gun, but I don't know how useful it really is. Anyway, I got killed farly quickly.
It was quite intense... perhaps a bit too much. Don't think I'm up to it.

I still need to get back and finish A Machine for Pigs. Got Rebirth installed for after as well. Not enough time / too many games. The Bunker may well be an instabuy anyway though as I'm really jonesing about the setting.

The Alone in the Dark prologue teaser has got my interest, they look to be playing it quite safe so I'd be incredibly surprised if they somehow found a way to make it worse than the previous two Alone in the Dark games. The Withering Rooms recently caught my eye, it's currently in early access but looks pretty promising.
