Yeah, the Xbox is a bit nanny state, it tries to stop you playing bad games.

Won't be tempted to waste any more time on Elden Ring then

Halo gunplay is unsurpassed, give 5 and infinite a go. They really are top notch games that surpass most modern shooters. They just don’t live up to the hype us fanboys wanted based on our love for the old games. Gears is also best in class for its third person shooting mechanics, and both gears 4 and gears 5 look great too. The stories are generic, but once you’ve got used to it you’ll be addicted to the gameplay. Also the gears games and halo 5 are amazing in online co op. Forza horizon 4 and 5 are the two best open world racers available Then pick up The ori games for brilliant 2d metroidvania fun with amazing graphics. Thank me later This all sounds clinically objective, must try them all now 👍

I've played Ori and didn't like it so the post falls apart there

I liked Ori a lot. But I was also unimpressed by Hollow Knight, so what do I know? Guacamelee is the best though

Haven't found anything useful online about my save reverting It's annoying but oh well. Thing is, I don't want to put dozens more hours into it now if it might happen again. As a formative Xbox experience, it's not a good one
Best I can guess is it downloaded the cloud save (which would have been before I took the console offline) and overwrote my local one for some reason. I don't know how to stop that happening again other than never going offline I guess

I looked at some of the old games that got improved since my x came on Friday but been playing Art of Rally career mode the most, a game I already own but lost my save on the epic store a while ago.

I deleted my local save and sync'd with cloud data; she gone What puzzles me is that the console can seemingly overwrite a newer save file with an older one, in any event, without it asking me if that sounds like something I would like to do. I can't really think of a situation where it would be desirable and should definitely trip some kind of confirmation
It still shows my achievements (one for reaching lvl 20)

That happened to me multiple times with 2 point hospital. The 3rd time it happened I just gave up, the xbox and cloud saves seems very glitch.

Can you just disable cloud saves?

Undeterred, I think I'm going to try and recreate the same series of events to at least try and understand why it fucked up my save so I can maybe prevent it happening again
...
Well, I couldn't. Tried various combinations of being on/offline with the game open or not and signed in or not
Think I'm going to just sulk for a bit and grudgingly move on to something else
This never happened on Playstation

If I've ever has a difference between the cloud and local save it has always asked which one it wants me to keep. Never heard of it just automatically choosing the online one. Unless the local save corrupted and it didn't have a choice? I dunno. Unfortunately if you only have one choice, it will have definitely lost your other save. No way to retrieve it.

I've made peace with losing the progress but what's bothering me is the thought of it happening again
I read online someone lost 15 characters D:
Then what bothers me more is having a console I'm scared to play games on. 'Don't play long games' isn't really an acceptable situation to be in. I'm thinking of going with it being a freak accident and just playing on, but if it happens again I'll VERY ANNOYED

Unless its an outage I've never had problems, done a lot of switching from pc to console with Forza and only issues is that game takes ages to transfer. Never played Borderlands though.

These are often game issues rather than infrastructure related. Quantum Break gave me a runaround years ago with cloud saves, I assumed it was the Microsoft servers being shit but turns out it was a bug that was fixed in a game update a week or so later.
Sounds like Borderlands has just done a number on you. It's shit but it is what it is.
I think you'll be fine going forward, just got unlucky is all.

I had issues with Borderlands on PC with save corruption. Not saying the Xbox service isn’t at fault here, but BL is notorious for glitching saves.

Yeah, never had an issue with a save loss in many years of playing. Did have a bit a ballache with BL3 on PC and had to restore my save from a file history backup, though.

Had a quick session this morning and got a sweet legendary double barrel shotgun. Helped a bit
But I miss Iron Bear. It's not the same

I have been able to reproduce the error I got before. Quitting the game while offline through the dashboard (without quitting to menu first) and then reloading the game gives me a network error screen with the option to retry or play offline. Selecting offline is followed my a syncing message (I don't know what it's syncing with offline)
It hasn't messed up my save again though. From what I've read online, most or all of the people reporting corrupted BL3 saves are from connection or power outages. Although they tend to say their save is reported as corrupted by the game
At least due to the random loot nature of the game, it's not just repeating the exact same stuff. Went back to Moze but really miss the class mod I had
Anyway, Is Halo Infinite single player worth playing? The couple of reviews I've watched seemed like they were trying to be positive but came across more like 'yeeeeah it's alriiiight.' Would it be better to play the earlier games instead (the grapple looks fun though)?
Can you play Half-Life on Xbox?

Infinite probably plays the best Halo ever has, but the previous games (barring 5) have better campaigns. The open world doesn't really ruin the pacing all that much, it's more the difficulty spikes during boss battles that make you feel like you should've grinded Spartan whatever powerups to build your tools. Leveling in the game is more Zelda, acquire upgrades-style than say just shooting a million grunts.
Oh, and The Orange Box is backwards compatible so yes, you can play Half-Life (well, 2 and the DLC episodes), but not 1 as it was never on Xbox.

Does story matter? Might go with Infinite as it's new and fancy and then, if I like it, go back for the good stuff

Ehh, after 3, all the stories became "Cortana has gone rampant, Chief goes rogue to save her." All of them. So go ahead and play the new and shiny to see if you like the core gameplay.
