Got the XSX all set up now. Didn't bother with the mobile app and it took me longer to pair the controller than it should have thanks to misleading information on the internet Plugging in to playing a game was less straight forward than PS due to the need to set up an account but it's fine now. Having the default power settings setup so it won't download updates when you turn it off was really annoying. Had a 10 hour patch to download that did fuck all downloading for the first few hours Joypad is fine and didn't really take any getting used to but why does the D-pad have a hard click? Fortunately I play with headphones on but that would drive me mad, let alone anyone who is in the same room as you
I'm playing Borderlands 3, so probably not much to notice in terms of visual upgrade but the menus don't lag anymore which is honestly such an improvement
Anyway, it's good. It's much smaller than I was expecting. I'm happy with it
I probably will play Prey (and the Dishonoured games again)

The faster loading will be the biggest improvement by far, until true NEXT-GEN™️ games start coming in. If you enjoy racing games at all, give Forza Horizon 5 a good. Or even 4, if it's still on GamePass. 5 is probably the most impressive game on the console though.

I currently have mine set to Cheapo power setting: it just seemed the right thing to do for the household.
Didn’t Bichii help us discover that some updates do now happen? I think I’ve caught mine partway through downloading when I’ve switched it on a couple of times.

Yeah you can get game updates even in power save mode

Generally speaking, it doesn't bother me. It was just because I couldn't play anything until I'd downloaded a big update (64gb), which I assumed would continue in stand by. It's not even that you have to change the power saving mode, you have to uncheck a further option not to turn off storage as well. It's just something I think should be pointed out to you during console setup. I lost hours

Yeah you can get game updates even in power save mode Really? Ok, might be time to shut mine down for a bit and see. I leave mine on instant on, since i hate having massive updates when I just have about an hour to play and it's taken up updating the game I hoped to play.

Updates are even flakier on Power Save mode, for me. I still use it because I don't use my XSX every day, but it is a tad frustrating to turn it on and there be 6 updates barely started.
Having said that, they weren't always reliable under instant-on either.

Yeah I would have to go into the updates bit and start them myself most of the time. Think it's for games you haven't actually played for a while.

Yeah, different levels of shittyness for me. Instant on rarely worked properly, and even if I check for updates and queue them up, power saving very rarely works.
I've just gone with power saving and accepted that I might need to update my current game after turning it on. Might try a factory reset at some point to see if that gives it a kick.

The patch downloaded fine once I'd switched to normal power saving and unchecked the storage off option
Something that suprised me was the controller using batteries. I can't remember the last time I needed batteries for anything, which is why I forgot to buy any. How long do they last?

@spookyxelectric Not really into racing games unless there's some form of violence included. Is Forza arcadey?
Is there anything special about Halo or Gears of War that makes them worth playing other than being exclusives?

Yeah, that's a bit of a pain in the Swiss. You can get play and charge kits, but they're not cheap.
Think batteries should last 40 hours depending on quality (it should've come with some in the box iirc)

Eneloop batteries are the business. It's a costly layout compared to cheaper options but will massively outlast them and as a result better for the environment too.

Is there anything special about Halo or Gears of War that makes them worth playing other than being exclusives? Forza Horizon is pretty arcadey, with loads of things to do. No real violence per se, like it's not a kart racer, but you can smash through walls and poles without hitting a complete stop. Some races are off-road, you've got little side activities like Danger Zones, where the point is just a drive off a ramp and see how far you fly. I don't know, it's fun, it doesn't take itself too seriously. Forza Motorsport though, which is coming later, is more sim though.

Is there anything special about Halo or Gears of War that makes them worth playing other than being exclusives? Had a look at a couple of video reviews and they both just look... OK? Halo Infinite is probably the most appealing as the tactical gameplay sounds fun but then the open world stuff sounds very open world. Gears just looks like a standard third person action game

Gears started that standard third person action template though. Gears is good, especially if you play the original trilogy. To me, it feels like a modern day Contra. Just shooting at aliens and vehicles from all directions. I also like the writing, in that despite appearances, it leans more into the war is hell territory than something gung-ho like Call of Duty or whatever. It's not like Naughty Dog level or anything.
Halo is also good! And I'd agree that I'm not sure the open world setting helped the series much. I was enjoying it until a boss fight that included a pair of brutes with rocket launchers and a big spinny wheel bike. I just kept dying, and it became really unfun. But the earlier games, especially the Bungie developed ones, are better. I think ODST is the best, personally.

At this point MS first party is polished (mostly, Infinte was a bit ropey as a package) but a bit stale. Horizon really is the crown jewel. Game Pass is the selling point: having a selection of new games to play in rotation.
But if you have someone to co-op the Halo and Gears games you should easily get your money's worth there. Unfortunately the delays have pushed the more interesting stuff a bit down the line.

Halo Infinite and Gears 5 look like solid games for people already invested in the series but don't really stand out on their own in any particular way. I'm not seeing why I'd pick Halo over something like Doom

The remastered Gears of War 1 still holds up very well, it's a great game. Rumours of remasters of the next two coming soon too.
Gears Tactics is worth a gander if you're into those sorts of games too. If you can park the fact you won't know WTF is going on story wise, Gears 5 is a blast. And it had a DLC campaign that's standalone that's also great fun.
Halo is one of the daddies of the shooter genre, certainly on console, and as said above some of the entries in the series were genuine classics. The latest Halo is only so-so. The gunplay is superb, but the open(ish) world is a bit meh and it's full of difficulty spikes. I had a decent amount of fun with it though, the shooty-bang really is very satisfying.

Halo gunplay is unsurpassed, give 5 and infinite a go. They really are top notch games that surpass most modern shooters. They just don’t live up to the hype us fanboys wanted based on our love for the old games.
Gears is also best in class for its third person shooting mechanics, and both gears 4 and gears 5 look great too. The stories are generic, but once you’ve got used to it you’ll be addicted to the gameplay.
Also the gears games and halo 5 are amazing in online co op.
Forza horizon 4 and 5 are the two best open world racers available
Then pick up The ori games for brilliant 2d metroidvania fun with amazing graphics.
Thank me later

Hi all Does anyone know if there are any of the Daystrike cameo controllers still out in shops (i.e. at a reasonable rrp) ? Still seems a shortage of pads. Annoyingly this version is "available" on Xbox.com but obviously not as when I go to checkout it tells me there is a problem. Cheers

Game (i know!) had some controllers a few months ago. Some fancier ones, but not sure on that one.
I needed a new controller after elden ring broke my rb button.
I thought MS would be the best bet for something in particular though. I had to order a fancy blue one from them for my boy, since you couldn't even get a regular one out in the wild last year!
