Nintendo have launched their very own music player on Android and Apple stores. It’s pretty much just Spotify for Nintendo, and it is free to download, but you must have the Nintendo Online Service subscription to use it.
It’s basically a library of all their game music (although there’s plenty that needs to be added yet). Some tracks can be set to loop for up to 60 minutes (if you want something to fall asleep to). You can search by game series, by game characters, artists (even fictional artists within Splatoon 3) and by general mood. It’s actually quite nice. I might well have some Pikmin music on in the background for my early nights from now on.
Sound quality seems top notch and you can download tracks in order to preserve data. If you search by game, there are even sub-playlists that break up the soundtracks by mood (so you might want to listen to the more chill music from Metroid Prime, rather than all the battle music).
It’s a solid start. It’s nice to see Nintendo do something with their music rather than just issue copyright takedown notice to a bunch of YouTubers.

I should point out it has Donkey Kong Country on there already, which suggests they are able to use some of David Wise’s amazing music, like Aquatic Ambience.
And to keep banging on about this at 5am, but they even have all the Wii console music. I’m now listening to the weather channel globe music. This is awesome!

Phendrana drifts is on there...
I'd download an app just for that song...
Very slick music player. Too bad there's not a web app, would love to listen to this whilst working

Is it just me or is the search function not working?

As in not at all? It’s working fine for me, but it does that thing where it picks up from your last search, which can confuse my poor brain.

The looping feature works really well, too. I wondered if it would repeat a whole track over and over again, but it’s cut in such a way that the looping is as seamless as you’d expect in a game.
I guess this is why not everything is available at the minute, because they can’t just dump every track without making these kinds of modifications.

Yeah. None of that here. I have noticed it seems to be quite a demanding app for some reason. I’m only using an iPhone 11, but if I have more than 3 or 4 apps open everything else slows down a little bit. A bit worrying, but otherwise no crashes or faults, or anything like that.

The extending feature is really well done, shame it's not on all songs.

For a moment I thought they were actually attempting a sequel to Wii Music...

Pointless anecdote time: Donkey Kong Country shipped with a compilation CD called Go Ape! featuring the likes of Primal Scream, Terrorvision and Radiohead. My mate had it and despite knowing most of the songs, I'd never heard Pop Will Eat Itself before. Everything's Cool was on there and that just blew my little socks off.

I know it has F-Zero on here already, but it has the Mario Kart 8 versions of Mute City and Big Blue as well. Epic stuff.

Nice... Although I also kind of think it would be more convenient if this stuff was just available through existing services instead of needing to have it's own app.

Yep, but it's also such a Nintendo thing to do. And tbf they're probably one of the very few companies that has such a vast collection of music they can get away with releasing their own streaming app.
It's pretty cool tbh, and a nice little bonus for NSO subscribers that just adds that tiny bit extra value.

I saw this announcement and though "that's unexpected and a little neat" I downloaded it and started listening to weird stuff like Wii menu music followed by classic stuff like DK and Galaxy and I realised I love it. I hope there's a steady stream of content and Nintendo don't let it slowly die with a weird update strategy.

Donkey Kong Country 2 has been uploaded now. Obviously they are going to drip feed titles on a weekly basis to get us returning to the app, but Stickerbrush Symphony is an all time classic, so it’s still good news.
I wonder when we’ll see the Xenoblade music?

I assumed you were joking until I clicked the link. That’s a banger. That’s definitely late 90s fight music. I assume these battles take place in dimly lit nightclubs with strobe lights cutting through heavy smoke as a ton of folk dressed in heavy leather and armed with assault rifles throw unusual shapes at each other.

Premier League-style football stadiums, actually. No, seriously. (well, except the 7th one because they're essentially the plucky local league team trying to make it big in the top ranks)
