And that's why no Sainz matters... as you were.

Oh, I must have daydreamed through the last 10 minutes. Thought that would be closer.

The Honda engine is just too quick at the end of the straights.

Oh dear, really poor championship management with that one.

Very silly mistake. P3 would have been absolutely fine.

Can't make sense of what he's done there at all. That's a dreadful error to make with so little at stake.

Why are we watching SAINZ??? The F1 TV directors are all shit, a car chasing leaves the track and starts to recover, lets see his teammate in the pits instead.

Two teams in a league of their own, one Mercedes unflappably holding off a car behind while the other struggles to progress through the midfield. The more things change the more they stay the same.

First dull race for a while, but it wasn't terrible. Leclerc's spin was interesting at least. Pleased for Lando and George, both drove beautifully.

Can't make sense of what he's done there at all. That's a dreadful error to make with so little at stake. I think Leclerc realised it was the only bit of the lap where he faster than the Red Bulls and was just desperately trying to get into DRS range, overcommitted and realised too late he'd got the line wrong. Over ambition rather than pressure I think. Still really didn't need to take any risks and it was so avoidable. Good shout to praise Tsunoda, well ahead of Gasly today and got to be his best weekend since his F2 days. Was a bit sad to see Perez so delighted by a P2, 16s behind Max. Suggests that's the limit of his ambitions, not that he had the pace today but rather confirms that he's not entitled to beat Max whenever they are line astern on track. I can't think of any other reason he'd be totally satisfied with that result after getting to P2 so early on. Ferrari will surely be forced to follow suit now and switch Sainz and Leclerc whenever required. Understandable in a team sport, but not great for F1 when only four cars have the pace to win.

Watched highlights of the 1981 San Marino GP on the F1 app last night. It was definitely the 'bad old days' in so far as the risks everyone was taking but I can't help but love how amateurish it all was.
At the start Pironi in sixth just casually stopped a full car length behind his grid box (presumably as it was slightly drier there) then he started rolling forward before the green towards his 'proper' position but never actually stopped so totally jumped the start, gained several positions. No further action apparently. I guess pre-grid sensors you could get away with murder.
Then Angel Guerra got punted into the wall on the first lap coming to a stop by the side of the track with a smashed nose cone. The race just continues whilst marshalls casually try and free his trapped leg from the footwell as he waits in obvious pain.
I looked him up as I didn't recognise the name. Poor bastard was in his first season and hadn't qualified for the first three rounds, then had this incident at round four which broke his wrist and ankle. He never raced in F1 again. His entire F1 career amounted to a few hundred meters of racing and two broken bones.
We also see an ambulance drive round on the track (presumably with Guerra in the back) whilst the race just carries on around them. Plus some marshalls seemingly wear whatever they like. There's a bloke in jeans, jumper and woolly hats who stands ON THE TRACK at one point whilst waving a yellow at the chicane. It's all quite hard to compute after all the safety measures and regulations seen these days.
The Italian director still managed to miss most incidents in the race (much to James Hunt's annoyance), but at least there was no 'jump cut to crowd or team reaction' mid-incident in those days. James Hunt would have lost his mind at some of the crap we get now.

Ah man. I remember years ago somebody on YouTube had uploaded almost every televised race from 81 or 82 onward. Not full races, mind, but 10 - 20 minute highlights with all the original commentary.
I watched every single race, up until the 98 season (which was the first year I watched every race as a child). Good times.
The 80s was chaotic, though. Some absolutely mental things happening, as you say.

Have to say I'm really loving the F1 archive. It's become my default thing to stick on in the background. I'd become resentful having to pay for live timing (it was free originally) but access to the archive turns it into a decent deal for F1 nerds. I think I had access last year as well, but never really investigated it until I found the android TV app.
My partner had just about accepted me watching current F1, F2 and F3, but shouting at the TV whilst watching a race that happened in 40 years ago appears to cross some sort of line.

The speed and the closeness to the walls is insane.

Definitely check out the 1981 British GP for an insane amount of cars crashing and otherwise ending their race. Including an ambulance just crossing directly over the track right in front of a racer.

Saw 5 minutes of that and almost threw up, what a bunch of twats
Speaking of which how does Vettel go from a finger pointing multi 21 twat to being an absolute hero? Never thought I’d say it but he’s becoming a bit of an inspiration.
