You can't not be delighted for the man. He deserved this today.

Max finishing 2nd in the 3rd best car shows why he and Red Bull are going to be hard to beat over a season as well. McLaren really need to get their act together. Hopefully Norris took notes of how Lewis treated those tyres at the end there as well, sublime racecraft.

A just reward for how he’s managed to keep going and keep trying after the horrendous end to 2021, and then being stuck in a bit of a shitheap of a car for 2.5 seasons. No one could have blamed him for hanging up his hat at some point in what must have seemed an eternity.

Man just bodied Lando in the cool down room 😂

I'm struggling to remember another week when more events that I hoped would happen actually happened!
What a brilliant race. Bit disappointed for Lando as he didn't do a lot wrong except for not using the Medium. Thrilled for Lewis who really earned that win with his wet pace and management of the softs.
He and Lando are some of the best I've ever seen in the wet. You just know that when conditions change they'll come to the fore. Class of the field in the middle of the race.

We've probably been a bit harsh on Gareth Southgate in hindsight. Given he's managing a team in the European Championship and head of strategy at McLaren at the same time.

Oscar and Lando really unhappy with the team after the race, the PR standing next to Lando was clearly uncomfortable while he was being interviewed.

Lando dropped a bit of a bollock getting into his pit box as well and cost himself time. Never noticed that during the race.
Piastri should rightly be furious. That was an absolutely braindead call.

McLaren and/or Norris don’t seem to quite have the killer instinct. They just about have the fastest car at this point and have had for 7 races now, but have won one. Had they won 3 or 4, and chosen to prioritise Norris as Red Bull would have done, he’d be in a real title fight now.
As it is with how reliable the cars are these days, Verstappen still has it sewn up bar Red Bull falling off a performance cliff after the summer break. Which seems highly unlikely.

McLaren should probably have looked at things race by race. It feels like they and Norris feel there was/is a small window of opportunity in the WDC with the amount of races left and the car they've found themselves with and all of their decisions are a reactive process with that in the back of their mind. They seem quite embroiled in whatever Max is doing most weekends.
With the aero allocation probably still favouring them over Red Bull for a bit (let's give it up for these regs btw, they have worked better than any I can remember at creating field parity in a balanced way) they really do have a chance at winning World Championships next year. This season is a great opportunity to pick up some wins and momentum into next season.
RB seem to have a really narrow ideal operating window, much like one of the Mercedes a few years back. Whereas McLaren just works everywhere, particularly at the end of stints and on low fuel. The way both cars came back at the Mercs when conditions got a couple of percent worse was frightening and bodes really well for them. Merc are in the same sort of boat as Red Bull. When conditions favour their car they are going to be right up there, but they are going to have weekends where they are a distant third. Ferrari, what can you say? They really, really need to land Newey as they just always seem to come up against a glass ceiling and get left behind trying to work out why. Lewis must be looking forward to next season a little less than he would have been a few months ago.

Today was also another case of the driver winning the race, not the car. Lewis won with the 2nd best car today. He managed an extremely tricky period when the track started getting greasy and the Mercedes looked laughably loose and hung on behind the McLarens enough to take advantage when they fumbled their strategy. The stint on softs was a master class in bringing the tyres in gently to make the end of the race less painful for himself. Glad he won driver of the day and not just someone who made a couple of places back after a shit start or a grid drop.

Only just caught up with this. What a fun race!
Proper chuffed for Lewis, that was some drive.
Max’s pace on those hard tires at the end was also ridiculous. Less the said the better about McLaren’s strategy though, was all a bit Ferrari.

That's so great. I especially like his slow transition out of it to his own voice towards the end. Smooth.

Nice to catch some Goodwood and see Hakkinen. Shame they didn’t have his F1 car or at least I didn’t see it when they ran a bunch of them. Who wants to see a boring Ferrari

That 98 Mclaren still looks epic. I got to see it up close at a motorshow in London a few years later. Unfortunately they had mounted it to a wall, so you couldn’t sit in it.
