Any tips on FPS games that are easy to set up for a small 4v4, either on LAN or via some private grouping or other?
My stepson is 13 and an avid gamer. We went to a local gaming centre for his birthday last year and he's since been back a few times with his friends. I've suggested he gathers up some mates and I'll find some old timers to join and we do a few 4v4 games. Youngsters against oldies.
The problem is, when we went last year, getting everyone in a game was quite a pain. We ended up playing CSGO but it involved activating the dev console in everyone's game settings, setting them to LAN=1 through the console, then running the game on 1 machine and joining on IP address from the others.
Then, rather than play CSGO for 2 hours, they got bored of it after 1 hour and wanted a different game, then faffed about for 30 minutes launching different games, only to realise they couldn't figure out how to all play together privately.
So with that in mind. Any suggestions for a game to play? CSGO is even more of a pain since they launched the new CS2 (I think you had to download a legacy edition or something).
The place we go to had several game launchers set up, steam, Riot, etc. with a variety of games. So there's some flexibility I think. The kids seem to play Valorant a lot but I've yet to play that.

Looking through my steam library, I think TF2 might be an option.

Rainbow six siege - you can do custom matches with just your own lobby, up to 5v5.

TF2 is certainly an option, we played that on most LAN parties. Left 4 Dead is good in 4 vs 4, but also needs console to host and connect.
Maybe also try some racing games like blur or grid, they are easy to get into and those two we often played on LAN parties.

It's old and maybe they wont like it but it's criminal to have a lan party and not have loaded up UT99

You've pretty much described my PC youth - I used to play for the UK Team in iCTF for a couple of years, went to a few LANs across the country to compete.

The Unreal games have been available on GOG, but have been removed late 2022, probably because of EPIC store or some bullshit. Unfortunately, I never owned them on GOG, otherwise I could send you the binaries. Maybe someone else on here has it on GOG.

Anyway, if they are open to play older games like UT99, this would widen the field tremendously.

Not in any clans worth a damn! I used to go by ~Dark Fox~ and 9/10 I'd be found in either CTF on Facing Worlds/The 'future' facing worlds and Lava Giant. Or occasionally I'd dip into Team/Deathmatch or Assault servers. I was so heavily addicted to UT99 from about 2000-2005 that my mum sold my computer to make me go outside and socialise more lol. 15 year old me was furious!
