They'll never take my Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum tapes away from me.
Of course, they'll eventually deteriorate and become completely unusable, but that's not the point!

20+ years old and there’s certainly nothing that old that’s been delisted/not had a revised version available. Not sure what you mean. There are certainly many games that got delisted and that are basically not available, lots of games that never made it to digital services, games that got delisted and where no remastered versions exist. You get remasters for games that didn't need them while a majority of lesser known titles are ignored and remain mostly forgotten. And then you get remakes/reimaginings, but only for games that are fairly well known. A lot of other games aren't even availaible in their original form. If you get lucky there might be some cheap physical copy left over. Just realised I didn’t finish my sentence. That first one was referring to games that I care about and would want to play today. I occasionally play some older stuff but not enough for me to put much thought into them not existing any more. I played them then, I rarely replay anything.

If you have one extra tape you can just copy them back and forth to preserve them. It's how long time storage works, they are rotating data among different tapes.

The worst a digital platform could do to me would be take away the convenience of my collection, but they can't de facto take any games away from me (a few multiplayer games excepted). I haven't pirated a game since I was a teenager, but if Steam disappeared tomorrow I'd have no qualms whatsoever about pirating the everliving hell out of anything I've already paid for and want to replay.

Same with me. Zero issue of pirating stuff if gog, steam goes down. With gog its pretty certain even niche games will appear. Steamworks games? Might be hard to track if they were some random low budget niche game.

I’m still sore that I lost access to the Xbox Live Indie Games I paid for. RIP One Finger Death Punch!

I was completely unaware I too have lost access to those games. Where’s my Apple Jack gone?

There was gold in them thar’ hills, if you could discern it from the shovelware and Hentai pet projects. TotalMiner was the Minecraft clone I played basically as a demo for Minecraft before it came to Xbox - and I swear the way it took you through the crafting tree and forced you to explore was actually better than Minecraft Survival mode at launch. And DLC Quest was a smart satire of the industry - locking basic gameplay mechanics behind microtransactions (thankfully not real ones, in-game coins).
Even some of the dross was funny enough to justify the 79p asking price

Wasn't "I MAED A GAEM WITH ZOMBIEZ INIT" one of the first "meme" xbox indie games that went viral? Also, i remember something about a red box indie game that also took off for a while.

Think I won a few bits of stuff, a cool Overkill t-shirt in fact!

jellyhead Yes - ironically that’s the one that made me realise I’d “lost” it - because they released it for Xbox One, not as backwards compatible, as the exact same game on a new platform, and I thought I’d lost my license for it until I realised it wasn’t technically the Xbox 360 version. Edit - the red box one was Impossible Game

I think Little Racers Street was my most played indie on the 360. I got a lot out of that one. Had some fun games with fellow EGers at the time. Likewise about Total Miner before Minecraft and the Apple Jack games. Still got them installed on a 360, but it doesn't get used so much these days. And I definitely don't feel guilty about the backlog of unplayed games on there, no-sir-ee. :/

I bet a lot of people bought it though.
Between how fanatical a lot of the LiS fanbase is, fear of spoilers and fear of missing out they’re pushing plenty of big buttons.

I listened to a gaming podcast last week with Jason Schreier, called Get Played. They briefly touch on the state of games journalism and how it’s in rapid decline, but apparently it’s now in a critical condition. Now that Google uses AI to filter out information from all these websites, there has been a huge drop of people actually visiting gaming websites. Game Guides in particular, which many places have used to boost visibility on Google, have pretty much died as their information gets condensed into a single paragraph at the top of a search result. Even reviews are being summarised based on aggregate scoring amongst multiple websites, with no referencing of any particular gaming websites.
Weirder still, this has also apparently dented Google’s own revenue stream as they are no longer generating income from users visiting sites and seeing adverts.
He goes on to say that getting into journalism at all is a challenge these days, but that if you’re looking at games journalism to not bother. We might see some big sites shutting before the summer as their income has collapsed.

I guess the days of search results being a thing at all are numbered, as people will just be asking an AI assistant and getting a generated answer.
Which will bring up the aforementioned issue that if no-one is creating any content the where is the AI going to get its inspiration/info from?

It's a weird move for such a game, because it creates spoilers even earlier than usual, which creates even less reason to actually play the game and not just watch a playthrough of a twitch streamer.

Early access has been a thing for forever, but it does seem that publishers are using this more and more, to squeeze out that extra dollar.
And regarding games journalism. I think we've touched on this before. A lot of lazy articles by EG for example. I mostly skim through the review, because a lot of the time I can't even tell if they have actually played the game.

And it's not just EG - if you filtered out all the half-assed 'listicles', and 'Get this random pop culture product at a discount from [retailer]!' articles from GameSpot, for instance, you'd have precious little left.
The recent Prime discount days resulted in so many of the latter that GS may as well have redirected their URL to amazon.com for the day, and saved themselves the minimal amount of effort each article necessitated.

But they're effectively forced into this because if they just write reviews and in-depth articles they'd go bust in a few weeks. It's like the way RPS suddenly started doing all these 'guides' and ended up with almost as many 'guide writers' on staff as actual writers. I very much doubt they wanted to do that, but it was a desperate attempt to get people to come to their site... and it sounds like even that has been cut out from under them.

The irony is that even those summaries from Google AI are somewhat innacurate and actually say the opposite of what you know is true. It's pretty weird.

Can't say I'm surprised this publisher is doing get the game 2 weeks early as publishers tested the waters doing 2 or 3 days early (as a lot of gamers accepted it and also angrily defended it) At some point it will - buy "premium deluxe edition" for 3 or 4 weeks early for some games

It's for all the streamers. They will happily pay a bit more to be early with their content. But in my opinion, it removes potential later customers that might have bought it if they hadn't already seen a complete playthrough two weeks ago.

That's fair, but at least guides constitute 'real' content in my (admittedly subjective!) opinion.
Endless lists, and glorified Best Buy/Walmart/Amazon/etc. adverts, are the absolute bottom of the journalistic barrel.
Of course, it's easy for me to cast aspersions from the sidelines like this - while I'd like to think that there's a balance to be struck between the algorithm-pleasing crap and actual games journalism, like reviews and in-depth articles, evidence suggests that perhaps there isn't.

Most game guides already have a tendency to feel like they were written by AI, with a template that mandates 2-3 paragraphs of fluff before conveying any actual information. And everything is of course split up into a bajillion pages (likely with no index) for more ad impressions and search engine hits, so nothing is searchable on site. If that's what games journalism is banking on I won't mourn them. Old GameFAQs .txt files are more useful and usable than what actual professional journalists write these days, and you'll usually find information faster by adding "reddit" or looking on YouTube and hoping for the best. Even a lot of dedicated game wikis are unnavigable hellscapes. And it's not just games, but the absolute state of the entire internet. Edit: It's like the way RPS suddenly started doing all these 'guides' and ended up with almost as many 'guide writers' on staff as actual writers. I very much doubt they wanted to do that, but it was a desperate attempt to get people to come to their site... and it sounds like even that has been cut out from under them. John Walker has said (I forget where) that RPS was profitable when they sold it. Not hugely proftable, but they weren't struggling. There's no way of saying whether that would be the case today if they just continued in the same vein, but at least back when changes started to happen it wasn't a matter of survival.

It's the first two chapters only that are available to play now, rest of the game is playable on launch. I guess as something of a hook for the existing fanbase to not get left behind and be spoiled going in. If you ask me, the better option would be to have them as available to play as a free demo with save file able to carry over.
