File me under the list of nutjobs who only buys on Steam then.
I've got Epic for the freebies, but never bought a game on there. Steam is just a much superior platform for me. Better UI. Cloud saves that work seamlessly across multiple PCs. Multiple account ability that works with family sharing. Steam Deck support. All my friends on Steam so easy to play multiplayer. PC to PC and PC to Deck streaming. Valve make good products so I prefer to give them my money over other evil Corps. Etc etc.
I'm not going to defend their 30% cut, but that's capitalism and they are so far ahead of the competition it's going to take some tectonic shifts to usurp Steam.

By way of comparison with Steam... Would be intrigued to know how many people here use Signal over WhatsApp? I use both as I've managed to convince some friends to use Signal, but inevitably I'm still saddled with WhatsApp, mainly for the same reasons Steam is so ingrained. Difference for me is that I don't think Signal is any worse than WhatsApp. But there we go.

It's WhatsApp for me as most people I know use it. I have one friend who despite using it too preferred to use hangouts and now Google chat.

£750m budget over 12 years and you're resorting to crunching your dev team to 7 day work weeks to meet a deadline. Super illegal anyway, you would think whatever department is in charge of this would have maybe know about the potential lawsuits over this insider-gaming.com/star-citizen-developer-cloud-imperium-games/

Red Dead had an update on Switch to add this message to it. Not sure they can take my cartridge away from me, but I can imagine the console locking me out one day.

I find it weird that gamers will defend what companies do when its an negative for them. If some publishers had their way, they would have only games go through server for even single player games so they can turn it off and make you buy the game again under the guise of remaster or remake. There is some gamers that are really weak minded

Or perhaps just less invested in gaming, even if it’s their biggest hobby.
In an ideal world I would rather we all owned everything, outright. I still prefer physical copies over a digital library as it feels like you have a greater sense of ownership. But on the other side, I also lost a gaming collection that spanned 5 generations and at least 14 different platforms to theft. And after accepting that loss I am much warmer to the idea of a digital-only, rental-based subscription service. I like Gamepass. I like Nintendo’s retro subscription offering. I’m happy if that becomes the future.
Not out of spite, but it’s easier to accept in the same way you don’t own anything, you don’t lose it either. And whilst that still costs money, it’s money I’m willing to part with to be entertained in that way.

So you jump from physical media directly to subscription based? Also, just so you know, but physical media can be copied, too. It doesn't necessarily have to be subject to the theft problem.

There is some gamers that are really weak minded I got scolded by users here for being upset for valve locking out users from their libraries when they still use old OS. That it is such a small thing it does not matter. Hence why ive been using gog whenever i can. Always have option to keep the games you bought and also works offline (few years ago i lost internet for 1 month. Gog games worked steam offline system broke after a week)

iirc some twat at ubisoft said "stop getting use to owning your games", it looks like ubisoft is getting use to not having profits
got 2 games on disc this week and so much cheaper than buying from the xbox store and I can sell but I also got blade runner game for £2 from the xbox store in the sale. I use gamepass (until recently it was really good) but all gamepass future sounds like crap. gamepass has been really ropey in the evenings again last week

So you jump from physical media directly to subscription based? Also, just so you know, but physical media can be copied, too. It doesn't necessarily have to be subject to the theft problem. Yeah, but a lot of those consoles were cartridge based, so can’t easily be replicated in physical form. And if I’d done that with the disc based consoles, that stuff would have been likely stolen too. Then that would leave me with Roms on a PC, at which point we’ve gone full digital anyway. And then I generally lack the enthusiasm for gaming on a desktop or laptop PC, so that is unappealing (if more affordable). That makes the subscription stuff immediately a whole lot more attractive. Especially being available on a modern console. And then the drip feeding of titles that frustrates a lot of folk, that actually helps me to narrow down my options and allow myself time to actually invest into an individual title rather than suffering choice paralysis and spend days flicking between a whole ton of games I barely dip my toes into. I dunno. It’s not for everyone, obviously, but I genuinely like the subscription model. As somebody who doesn’t like ‘AAA’ games all that much, it kinda breathed fresh air into my hobby. I’ve played a whole ton of genuinely excellent games I might not have forked up the money for otherwise. It’s broadened and expanded my tastes and offered up a lot more variety than I’d have otherwise allowed myself. It’s shown me that I will more likely play it safe with games if I were to buy them outright. And then obviously, my original point, if I lose them then it’s yet to feel like a big loss as I never owned them.

What enthusiasm do you imagine does PC gaming need?

I prefer a dedicated device. I need to see a menu of games from boot up (or even immediately jump back into a game). I don’t want to boot up software within software, or fiddle with any performance settings. It also needs to operate from the get go with just a controller. It needs to fit under my TV, but be ready to move and if it’s a game I know I am going to love, I still need a physical option. Just in case.
To be honest unless it’s something like a revised Steam Deck, I’m probably never going to go near a PC based platform ever again.

I’ve never cared about having a physical copy of a game. I play virtually nothing that’s 20+ years old and there’s certainly nothing that old that’s been delisted/not had a revised version available.
Its a lot of energy to worry about something where there are hundreds of other decent new games every year to play, and very little time to do so.

I think ownership is probably a more important debate than physical v digital really. Although there is something of a connection.
I’ve got physical new releases on console that either require big patches on start-up or are only an installer and the opening chapter on the disc. So wholly dependant on the publisher keeping the servers alive.
And I’ve got digital console games that could disappear overnight if a license holder said so.
But then
I’ve got digital PC releases where its the whole game downloaded and mine to keep. So long as the hardware and software remain compatible.
And ultimately, the Game Boy, Master System and PS1 games that are all still in perfect working order and really its only those pre-online connectivity games that are truly mine.
The rest is just working out which compromises we’re left willing to make to access the games we want.
Or we all just jump to Nintendo.

20+ years old and there’s certainly nothing that old that’s been delisted/not had a revised version available. Not sure what you mean. There are certainly many games that got delisted and that are basically not available, lots of games that never made it to digital services, games that got delisted and where no remastered versions exist. You get remasters for games that didn't need them while a majority of lesser known titles are ignored and remain mostly forgotten. And then you get remakes/reimaginings, but only for games that are fairly well known. A lot of other games aren't even availaible in their original form. If you get lucky there might be some cheap physical copy left over.

Yeah, it took 20 plus years for Marvel vs Capcom 2 to be released on modern machines.

If you get lucky there might be some cheap physical copy left over. And also remakes/remasters that usurp the original. You can no longer buy the original Dark Souls. Until recently, you could not buy the original Resident Evil 2 or 3 (now available on GoG, just in the last few months). I think for some time you couldn't buy the original trilogy of GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas when the remasters came out. There is also the issue of music licensing, which was another issue for GTA games, as well as Alan Wake. I'm sure there are also single player games that needed to be verified online that can't played without workarounds anymore, so aren't sold. Obviously, plenty of multiplayer games with servers turned off, so they won't be sold anywhere either.

So wholly dependant on the publisher keeping the servers alive. are you sure about that?, the full game is on there (in nearly all games) but I know if you put a disc in it (on xbox anyway) will take some info from the disc but download the patch or large chunk of the game. So people think there is only a couple of gig on there.
If you install offline, you get the full game in 99% of cases.
I think old telltale games gave you 1 episode and telling download the rest as they were not made

Cough, cough...All CoD games, Jedi Survivor, a good deal of Switch games where the physical copy is a box with a code in it.
So yes...nearly all games.

A code in a box is not a disc so don't count that
I played MW1 reboot one and activision really messed up that install as want you install there warzone and you need to have activision account. its really good example of cutting access to your content if the servers gone down or get removed. Never had a problem with the old COD games (not that I play them since MW1 reboot)

If you're going to sell a boxed product and put it on a shelf with no game cartridge inside, just a code (sometimes not even in the box but on the fucking receipt)then yeah I'm going to count that.
