To be honest, it's quite surprising that there are not more ads in games. Agree, but imagine the nerd rage that would be unleashed on the first movers to try this. Gamers are awful people to have as customers Poor publishers
What exactly would be the benefit of ads in games? Do you think they'll lower the prices? They get more money and we get the exact same games with shitty ads everywhere
You say you're not pro publisher but you clearly do care more about their finances than you do the quality of games

I'd take nerd rage over ads tbh
Gamers are great customers anyway, they're continually happy to engage with shitty practices

Does anyone remember one of the first game subscription services... I forget the name, maybe Gametap?
Pretty sure it had a free tier where you had to watch an ad before gaming, or something like that. I remember quite liking it, but then it got bought out by some other company and they screwed it up.
Ads in games.. depending on the game I don't mind. Sports/Racing/Real world city games they'd probably work fine, and if it isn't obnoxious then who cares if it generates a bit more money for the developer/publisher.
Sticking ads for Doritos in a Zelda game would be another matter.

Hmm... googles... nope, it was Gametap (go memory!) I think I played a bunch of Tomb Raider games for free on it, plus they got American McGee to make a game for it... which was meh.
Ahead of its time in a lot of ways... though I assume they couldn't get anywhere near enough money from making you watch a 20 second ad to cover the game cost. Hence it disappearing.

There's nothing wrong with subscription models as long as they aren't the only option to play a game. As someone else mentioned, it's basically the modern equivalent of renting from Blockbusters, with all the benefits and downsides that entails.
Same with free to play Vs paying upfront. Both can work well, it only starts to feel scummy when a paid game includes endless micro transactions (which most big publishers now do).

The inevitable problem will come when each publisher insists on it's own subscription service.

The inevitable problem will come when each publisher insists on it's own subscription service. That's only a problem if it becomes the only way to play the publisher's games. I can't imagine any publishers are rushing to go subscription only after seeing the "success" of Ubisoft's attempt, for example. I think subscriptions are generally good for gamers as they offer choice and can be good value in certain circumstances, but I'm less convinced they're good for developers, especially the small and mid sized ones. I'd be interested to see the stats, but I've probably bought more games on Steam in the last 12 months for the Steam Deck then I have in the last 4 years on Xbox due to GamePass, even though Xbox is my main platform at the moment.

There was at least one attempt (years ago) with some racing game adding billboards for real companies/products, and I vaguely recall there being some others. I have a vague recollection that Carmageddon had billboard ads

Just wait until every single game costs £10 a month instead of £70 once. Then £20, then £30... Edit: not a response to anyone's post, just to the thread in general. That might actually be better depending on how it's implemented and what the games contain, if you can finish a game in a month or two you're suddenly paying only £20 per game Suddenly there is a massive spike in difficulty or the amount of bullshit busywork required to progress to completion to lengthen the game.

As soon as one of them gets it to work the rest will want to carve up gaming the same way we’ve seen streaming tv become such a nightmare appscape

I don't really see that working for gaming, although given how much money everyone that isn't Netflix is losing, it isn't really working for streaming TV either.

One of the Rainbow Six Vegas games had adverts on the bus shelters, seemed harmless at the time.

Yeah Ubisoft and EA offer it but they've never exploded in popularity and it's primarily used as an addition not as an exclusive place to play their titles. With how long game development takes compared to tv and games they also know they don't have enough content where people would stay in any great numbers.

Just to add, this is a personal opinion and if you enjoyed it then great. I just don't feel that it holds up today.
