Doesn't sound so bad in the end, given the missus is a bit disabled and has always struggled with walking any kind of distance let alone steep beach paths I've been the pack mule for decades now, I tend to drop the missus/sprogs off as close as possible to the beach then park wherever, I've grown to not mind the 10 minutes or so solitary pack mule march from/to the car, gives me a bit of peace and quiet! A wet suit was a game changer for me for staying in the sea for a long time and it avoids any sunburn too.

No shade at you, it's just something I've encountered a lot from people in my life and their need to be productive or always doing something. I'm glad someone else has this view. I also find it baffling. I do like to be productive but the mentality of always being busy is pretty infuriating for me. Both my retired parents have this attitude, but they busy themselves with absolutely pointless guff and then really get stressed out about it, and wonder why they have high blood pressure and all sorts. You're retired! Chill the fuck out! I do wonder how generational the attitude is. I met the irritating old dear from flat above in the stairwell recently. Asked how I was and I said "far too busy with work, loads on" and she pipes up "Oh that's good then, you're keeping busy!" Errr, no, it's not good. It's fucking annoying and I want to chill out and do things I enjoy. Not arbitrarily "keep busy".

Friends of ours who live fairly far from a coastline are essentially demanding a beach trip when we're seeing them this weekend. We've said that it wasn't a good idea because of the temperature (31c) and it's likely going to be fucking unbearably busy. Met with an "well our two kids love the beach and could stay out all day". Well good for you, but we live by beaches and know to only visit when it's cooler and less busy because crowded beaches with no shelter from the sun are not fun, but yeah we'd love to do that... I know I sound unreasonable, and we're lucky to have a choice of beaches and can avoid crowds when wanted, but they've picked a touristy town with a big harbour beach and it is going to be sweltering and full of the unwashed masses. Groan. Give me a secluded beach in the low 20s with a moderate breeze every single time. So this happened today. Got there reasonably early no parking, so had to park quite far from the beach and lug everything down like a pack mule. Took ages to set up our beach tent, got slightly crisped whilst doing it, and it was fucking rammed. However, the kid had a great time with our friends kids, I had some of the best ice cream I've had in ages (one scoop of biscoff, one of cold brew coffee) and spent a good couple of hours swimming in the sea. Only downsides were a sun/heat/tiredness tantrum at the end of the day, and my bruised ribs are now a whole lot worse. Hopefully tomorrow I can rest properly. It will never be my favourite way to spend time on the beach surrounded by way too many people, but the weather was actually...dare I say... glorious. We've had family visiting so have done lots of beach as well as other touristy things. I'm quite lucky that I have a beach hut to store all the crap in, so it's not much of an issue even if I can't get parked that close. Biggest issue is always shade - we have a few brollys but often not enough. I do love it down there though, it's my proper happy place. Have got down quite a few times in my 2 weeks off but perhaps not as much as I'd like. The youngest loves it down there but the eldest gets bored unless the tide and wind are ok for paddle-boarding.

I'd retire and never do any meaningful work again in a heartbeat if I could.

I think I'd retire and still do a spot of private teaching. I just like helping people.

I'd ponce around and actually try and do something creative, drawing or whatever. Find it hard to really have the energy to do anything whilst working.

I am not remotely creative - I'd use the time to do more exercise, walking especially. Would need to be disciplined with diet and booze though as could easily slide into extreme laziness.

Oh I'd also go for walks regularly (at least when the weather is a sensible fucking temperature).
I guess the point is, I can fill my time with objectively meaningless stuff very result and happily. And I'm also fairly happy just doing nothing. The only reason I work is because I have to, because money is unfortunately a thing.

I hope that ideally in the near future we can change our lifestyle, move to the tropics and fuck cold off for good. And that would mean even in retirement there would always be something to keep you busy, like feeding the animals, gathering eggs and tending the gardens/orchards. Hopefully the kids can take over whatever business side we come up with. Get most things done in the morning and then fuck around in the afternoon maybe fishing or yowie hunting with a nice cold beer in the evening photographing storms. Might end up doing something completely different though but that is the goal looking forward.

When I was a kid in junior school we were promised 3 day weeks as adults due to computers doing everything.
The lying bastards. I work in automation and the more we automate the more work we seem to have to do.

lol, if I was trolling you'd all know it. I'm being as nice as I can be. I mean we haven't seen nights below 20 since May and probably wont see one until October, yeah the 40 degrees yesterday wasn't pleasant but the 34 right now is. Millions of people live, play and work in these conditions and it still has nothing on the temps I'm used to in Australia. Just no ozone hole here so I can actually go out in the sun and enjoy myself without burning to a crisp.

Just back from a 2hr run in this heat and I didn’t take any water, because I’m an idiot. I’m so dehydrated I can see Jesus waving to me on the crest of a wave of sausages.

I think Hickman is trolling us lovers of this glorious weather. There's a few clouds today so not quite as glorious as yesterday.

Yeah, pretty much full cloud cover here now and a slight breeze, so not too bad. Actually sitting in the sun for the first time this week. Popped a couple of bottles of water in the freezer earlier and don't know why I haven't done that sooner. Much less faff than ice cubes that dissolve in minutes.

My favourite part of a heatwave is seeing half of London tube stations underwater the day after it finishes.

I don't mind the sun, it's the fucking daft temperatures so fuck you lizard people.
Cloudy here but still above 30 degrees so it's not even "nice" to look at.
Next week is looking good though, shouldn't go above 24. Lovely.

It's a cool 25 degrees in Worthing, just went in the sea and finally feel cool.
Now to go back to the 32 degrees I left at home.

It’s not that long ago I was sat cold at home refusing to put the heating any higher and longing for feeling too hot in the summer and trying to picture/imagine it as a way of psyching myself into feeling warmer.
Im banking all this into my noggin now ready for this winters bug freeze and power cuts*
* there will be power cuts whatever the rationing situation is as I’ll switch stuff off at source and tell the mrs the whole towns got no gas due to Truss. She will believe it and I save money for beer and kebabs.
