I don't think the assassins should be triggered before you advanced quite a bit in the Balmora Imperial agent questline, though. At least I haven't seen any in my latest playthrough until fairly late into those quests.

At least I haven't seen any in my latest playthrough until fairly late into those quests. It's possible it bugged out (Bethesda game after all), or I vaguely remember they might have patched it.
Anyway, I'm sure it's not actually the worst expansion ever... it's just the one that I remember messing up my game the most.

Unreal Tournament 2004 - I technically class as an expansion. It took UT2003 and made it actually good. Battlefield 2: Special Forces - Was great fun and also fixed the insane unlock system a bit Doom's The Plutonia Experiment - incredibly influential for Doom mapping even today. Half-Life Opposing Force - Not quite as refined as the base game but full of memorable stuff Oblivion: Shivering Isles - One of bethesda's best, TES is better when it's weird Bioshock 2: Minerva's Den - 2 is underrated relative to the first generally, but this is the best thing about the whole franchise Witcher 3 - Both expansions are excellent. Blood and Wine is just more Witcher 3, while Hearts of Stone is an excellent story New Vegas - Old World Blues - More New Vegas and meets the standard of design/story telling in the base game easily Prey Mooncrash - Amazing job translating it to a roguelike-esque structure and frankly far better than Deathloop. Dark Souls - Artorias of the Abyss - some of the best bosses in the series, and just more of the best Souls game.

If Tears of the Kingdom counts, so does Majora's Mask and Doom 2

Oh fucking hell, how did I forget
Witcher 3 - Hearts of Stone

Most of mine have already been mentioned (Witcher 3's (all), GTAIV BOGT, and TLOU Left Behind) are probably my favourites but I'll add:
- Dragon Age Origins: Awakening - more of the same but almost a sequel in size and scope and added to the lore.

Yeah i've got to say something from WoW as well; Burning Crusade for me.
Not really because i think it was the best one, but more the good in game memories associated with it at that time.
Grrrr, great days

Borderlands 2 - Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep
I hesitated because I think it's not the best Borderlands DLC in terms of gameplay, but everything else like writing, humour, setting, world building etc. is just stellar. There's so much unique content that it's almost an entire spinoff game (like they'd do later with Wonderlands). Truly exceptional.

At least I haven't seen any in my latest playthrough until fairly late into those quests. Seems it depends on the version. On PC you can be attacked anytime, even when you first start out, though the chances of an attack increase with your level. On Xbox, you must have reached at least level 6. Looks like something that should have been patched really. I'm surprised they never did.

I remember there being quite a few nods to Dark Souls that might not have fully landed
Also, I'm sure I read somewhere that BL4 and TTWL2 are in development. Can't remember if it was a legit source but surprised and happy if TTWL is getting a sequel
Hopefully Gearbox being bought doesn't mean they end up full of MTX

No, after BL3 I just couldn't get into BL2 anymore, so it's been a while and I doubt I'll ever return. As for the takeover, I don't know anything substantial and can't be sure, but my gut tells me it's over.

NWN 2: Mask of the Betrayer I've never actually played it, but based on reputation alone it has to be a firm favorite for a medal. Given that everyone thought the original was underwhelming, and MotB is supposed to be one of the best RPG campaigns and have inspired a bunch of later classics.
Maybe the award for Most Improved.

I think Binding of Isaac got too bloated with all the Rebirth updates, but before that happened, Wrath of the Lamb was pretty amazing and really turned the base game around.

It was a proper high level DnD campaign. I've played the rat-slayer to dragon knight fantasy progress arc too many times and thus love anything that gives me a bit of an elevated scale. Give me a high level character right from the start and companions that would be main story opponents in other games. Then let us campaign against the gods themselves.

I second bg2 throne of bhaal as best expansion. There is a reason why it makes trilogy with bg1 and 2. This is what I thought first seeing this thread.
Of course witcher 3 expansions mass Effect 3 citadel, frozen wilds.
Not mentioned: Hl1 opposing force
It really hit the spot of what it means by great expansion.
Added to story, new weapons, new maps, new enemies, new game mechanics but at the same time it was integral part of the main half life 1. Loved it!

RDR: Undead Nightmare. Easily. It completely transformed the game and integrated completely organically, using all the original game mechanics, whilst giving you plenty of incentive to keep playing.

Although I have a deep seated hatred for destiny for how much it wasted my time I’d say the taken king was a brilliant expansion and the raid was epic.

Yeah, Throne of Bhaal is a great mention because - even though it's not as good as Shadows of Amn - it actually finished off the storyline instead of making everyone wait for an alternate BG3 that might never have happened.
Also fully agreed on Opposing Force. It might not be canon, but it just had so many fresh things to it that were mostly very well implemented.
Diablo 2 - Lord of Destruction gave us more great music from Uelmen, snowy landscapes, another nice hub and some unique and memorable environments like the Frozen River and the Worldstone Chamber.
I honestly didn't think of Mask of the Betrayer, but there is a reason why it often gets mentioned alongside with Planescape: Torment.

I also want to add, with how perfect Outer Wilds was, Echoes of the Eye was almost as good and managed to integrate into the existing storyline very well. And with a killer soundtrack that surpasses even the original game, to boot.

Ace Combat 7 has had strong DLC in terms of the wee mission expansion and planes.
I remember quite enjoying Fallout 3’s packs, one was swampy, one snowy. Last time I enjoyed the franchise too.
Whichever Forza Horizon had Storm Island was good. There’s been a few good DLCs on that.

It’s so easy to have a bad run thanks to the item bloat. There are so many mediocre to worthless items now you just end up with crap stacked on crap.

Taken King Forsaken Witch Queen
To a lesser extent I'd also argue in favour of The Final Shape.
But 3 separate expansions that took me from "I'm pretty much over this game now" to "I don't see any issue with playing this game every single day".
It's been a love/hate 10 years. But Bungie sure know how to pull one out of their arse when they are on the ropes.
