There's a video game forum called The Bear And Badger (https://www.thebearandbadger.co.uk/). Are any of you members? They seem to have been around for a bit. Although I am not sure what the future holds for the forum. The site is also suffering from problems at the moment.

Never heard of it! Might be good to bring them here if they're in need of a place for exiles. Worst that can happen is they're toxic and the mods can have a field day banning them all.

Their forum rule is "don't be a dick" so as long as it's upheld they will probably be ok.
If ecosse is over there and you bring him back I will be blaming you though š

Hello from one small corner of the internet to another! Was predominantly the old Edge forum if I remember This is correct. There was an early version of the Edge forum and I think a lot of its users ended up over at rllmuk. There was a second Edge forum, which was when I joined. When Future Publishing started consolidating its websites, they shifted us onto new forum software that was so basic and broken, it was borderline unusable. (There were suspicions it was a deliberate move by Future, but who knows.) One of the forum members had some server space and forum software, and we migrated. That was over ten years ago, and weāre still going strong as a small, but close community. There are regular meet ups, and members have been to each others weddings, birthdays and, unfortunately, funerals. The site is also suffering from problems at the moment. Fairly recently, the guy whose server we started on handed over the reins. Weād been having wee blips and hangs for a while, but weāve got a bit more control than we used to. Weāre almost certain that bots scraping the forum to train AI is the primary cause of the glitches. Our technical folks have found ways to block it, but it can make it difficult for new members to join. We donāt get many new members, so itās not a major issue, but sometimes old friends manage to find us and rejoin, so weāre looking for a way to keep the forum running smoothly while also keeping the landing light on. On that note, I had a particularly hard time joining your forum after I found this thread. It took four or maybe even five attempts, and each time there was no notification that my application had been rejected; I only found out when I tried again and found out that the username was available.

Came into this thread hoping that it was a celebration to the opening of the sister cafe to the Hog & Hedge on the A30 just outside of Exeter; one of my favourite and conveniently placed service station stops.
Sadly I was misled. Carry on.

In case anyoneās curious about how we got our nameā¦
Back on the old Edge forum, if somebody had posted a dead end thread, or had derailed a thread into oblivion, folk would post an image of a padlock to indicate requesting a thread be locked (or just to drown out the troublemaker). Iām sure that sort of thing wasnāt exclusive to our forum but, one day, someone posted a picture of a padlock that looked for all the world like a cuddly bearās face. After that, it became standard practice to replace the images of padlocks with images of bears.
Some time later, when the Future publishing overlords (or just the mods of the forum) thought that the language was getting too fruity, they installed a text replacement filter that substituted foul language. The c-word got replaced with ābadgerā, which lead to potty-mouthed folksā posts reading, āwtf? I didnāt write badger, I wrote badger,ā then getting increasingly frustrated when they couldnāt work out what was happening. From there, ābadgerā became both a term of endearment, and the name for a member of the forum. There was a brief flirtation with spelling it ābƦdgerā to include the name of the forum (Iām wearing a BĆDGERS FOREVER hoodie as I type this) but it didnāt stick long-term.
When we jumped ship and set up our own forum, the most popular option was to give it a pub-style name of āThe (something) & (something), and when somebody suggested The Bear & Badger it met universal approval.
Meanwhile, everyone over there is wondering why you guys are called Font Geek. Iām not seeing many threads about typeface and kerning.

Didn't we have some of the classic threads saved for posterity on here somewhere? Surely the origin story must be in there?

Yeah the classic threads thread is still there and that post is in it DrewMerson the names stems from that post. Mowgli iirc shat on a chair, had an argument and then tried to say he didnāt feel so good I donāt feel so good became āI font geek so goodā and became forum legend User Decks drew a fantastic picture of said incident but sadly the image is lost forever

Said user tried to insist after the fact that this didn't happen and his friends had somehow got his phone and posted this to make him look bad. No one bought it.

Iām not seeing many threads about typeface and kerning.
I tried to start one on the much-missed RPS forum, which was ironic because I'd never heard of FontGeek at the time, but the escalating threats between the serif and sans serif crowds were bordering on sectarian violence. Nasty business all around.*

Heh. I suppose memes from drunken posts is a universal thing.
I once drunkenly started a thread to tell the B&B lot how much I loved them. In amongst the general incoherence was the single word sentence, āHonds.ā To this day, I have no idea what I was trying to write. It has entered the forum parlance as an expression of affection, to simply replace similar words like āhandsā or āhounds, or if one is not sure what else to say.

DrewMerson for historical accuracy purposes, this forum started out when the old Eurogamer forum closed, then RPS closed and some of them joined (and were welcomed with open arms) Thereās also those crazy guys from EG Italia who also joined, I donāt see them post though so maybe they found a new home? The EG and the RPS people are as one now
