Little tip. Peel off that fucking sticker and utilise it's stickyness to clean the monitor stand!! This is the 3rd time in 15 years you've had a go at the dust in my house Yes, yes, I'll clean it!

I quite liked Sigil 1, with the exception of some of the difficulty balance being whack and it occasionally getting exhausting taking down cacodemons when you don't have much in the way of plasma/rocket ammo iirc. Sigil 2 I was less keen on.
It can be odd playing Doom 1 WADs, feels limiting without the SSG and extra enemy types.

Yeah there's a slight shift in playstyle between the two I find. I do like the first one for its various reasons, but same for 2. Its a nice problem to have though

My refusal to turn Roboquest's difficulty down is probably why I haven't won a run yet, but damn is it a good time, especially once you have most of the abilities.

DOOM IS BACK and this time its free? Not quite, the upgrade is free if you already own the games. It's 9 quid if you don't own the games.

Seems like a pretty comprehensive package. At the very least its convenient to have it all in one place.
Doom, Doom 2, Master Levels, Evilution, Plutonia Experiment, No Rest for the Living, Sigil, and a new one called Legacy of Rust. 187 levels in total apparently.
There are some accessibility options, original or beefed up soundtrack, some difficulty modifiers (mostly to make it harder), a polish up of resolutions, mod support, and galleries of art assets and textures.
All that’s missing for me is the option of PS1 soundtrack and a cheats menu.

What if you only own one game?

I think it’s still free, which is super generous.
Edit - Indeed it is. Just downloaded the double pack on the eShop with a 100% discount. I only owned the original Doom. Not Doom 2.

Nice. The previous Doom(2) release was already really good, with some nice QoL improvements and support for some community mods.
The Quake releases (remasters?) have also been really good. They've also been really generous with lots of them.

Their sale has made me realise there hasn’t been a new Quake game in 20 years.

All that’s missing for me is the option of PS1 soundtrack I was thinking that as I watched the trailer! It's been 29 years and I still find it weird playing Doom without the PS1 soundtrack and sfx, as the first Doom I played it's etched into my soul. How fucking amazing would it be if they could release a package like this with that option.

Don't suppose it has any way to transfer over save games? I'm half way through an on-again-off-again run of Doom 2. Not that I'd mind too much starting again, given how many times I've played it.

There's a level select anyway. You'd have to pistol start but it's character building

Their sale has made me realise there hasn’t been a new Quake game in 20 years. There was Quake Champions a few years ago but I don’t think id, Bethesda or the fans ever invested much time or effort into it.

I was ignoring that too. I want a new single player quake.

Quake Champions is actually still going and being updated I believe. It's a shame it has the class based/hero shooter stuff in it as the core was honestly quite solid.
The new port is pretty good, but I don't think it's quite enough for me to stop using Nugget Doom or DSDA just yet. It needs options for auto centering the weapon when firing and a better way to load mods that aren't on the browser.
Also the performance is technically not great relative to source ports, I loaded up Eviternity 2 and it did actually drop below 60 at some points in the 2nd level whereas DSDA and Nugget Doom both maintain hundreds of FPS without breaking a sweat.

Oh... Quake Champions is free? Didn't it used to be paid?
I got quite into Quake Live a few years back, which was their version of Quake3 that could be played in a browser. But then they moved it from F2P to paid and I never moved over. It seems like they've had problems finding a good business model for recent quake games.

I *think* parts of it are used in Doom 64 - similar at least - but then you’d have to put up with all the really the ugly art changes 64 has

Was Early Access for a year then launched as F2P iirc. Quake Live's switch to paid was kinda weird but tbh I feel like it was looong before companies got to grips with how to do those kinds of offerings.

Their sale has made me realise there hasn’t been a new Quake game in 20 years. There has only ever been one Quake - the first one (with updates like Quakeworld).
The original had a very distinct aesthetic and atmosphere that he sequels never replicated, which were a more generic "pew pew pew space soldier vs the aliens" thing rather than the eerie fantasy horror vibe of the first. Quake 2 was originally developed to be a completely new IP, and just got lazily rebranded before launch for the brand recognition. This then became the Quake brand from then on, because it needed to look more like Unreal and or something.

Don't get it. It says it's already in my steam library. But I've been playing this version for years. So what's it on about?
Edit, ah, although steam is saying it needs an update. Maybe that's it.

The short version is you haven't been playing this version for years, this is a new one replacing the old one. Instead of the older Saber-developed Unity engine port that released a few years back, this is a new one by Nightdive on their Kex Engine. Hence the totally different interface now. It's broadly speaking a much better port too, though a few steps behind the best source ports IMO. What's quite cool is that users can upload wads/mods on all non-Switch platforms too. Though it's kinda the wild west out there. There's a brand new episode with new weapons as well. What's really great is that the new weapons and new enemies etc are in separate wad files which means wad/mod makers can easily use them in their own maps.

Agree, and I loved the original very much for that vibe. Really disappointing that he sequel went off in a completely different direction and the Strogg are what people think of with single player Quake now. I would say that Q3 didn't completely abandon the original aesthetic though. Plenty of gothic elements in that. Being multiplayer of course meant the actual gameplay wasn't anything like the first.

Yeah, just noticed it needed a steam update. It's updated it now and I'm just having a look. I'll go through d1 and see what it's like. I'm not sure on a remix soundtrack as I'm obsessed with dooms original soundtrack but I'll give it a go!

Please tell me it has mouselook? It's not in the menus or the console ((( deal breaker! Ack, wtf is up with the mouse input? It's slidey as fuck?

Mouse weirdness could be acceleration etc, check it's not enabled. Also check you don't have vsync on.
There's no free look as far as I can see, I don't think the old unity port had it either though.
I'm curious if it's actually using a full hardware renderer, if it is I'm both impressed they've replicated the look so closely (looks as good as DSDA Doom's renderer) but if so they should have free look. Maybe there's a console command.

I assume it’s the same on all consoles, but on Switch you get to keep your original Doom purchase too.
