Just released. Imagine CoD but with characters based on Ubisoft franchises that have themed abilities and ultras. PC and console.
It's OK so far - it's free (good) and I don't think it takes nearly as much space on the SSD as CoD (great). Their big selling point is no SBMM.
Servers have been buggered this evening.

Looks painfully generic.
Also given the dramatic fall off in players that The Finals saw, I'll be surprised if this has momentum.

People think they don't want sbmm until they realise what sbmm has protected them from. The below average players will disappear in no time as they will get chain fucked every game. That leaves the average and above meaning the average will find themselves the bottom of the good chain and they will tail off as well.

Happens to me in Overwatch. They go on about how it should be 50/50 meaning it's a close match and it comes down to individual plays or teamwork, but instead as a solo queue player 50/50 means you're either in a team getting absolutely stomped upon or you're the ones doing the stomping. Going from a K/D of like 1 and 8 to the next game where it's 29 and 1. And in that way, 50/50 means its a coin flip as to what team youre in against the other. Having a close match seems rare and inbetween. It's so ridiculous, can't take it serious.
Anyway, xDefiant is one of those games I already thought was out like 2 years ago so that doesn't bode well.

To be fair to you,it was supposed to be but they kept delaying it to work on things (not necessarily a bad thing).

It is funny how most of the people moaning about SBMM are the really good players/ YouTubers who just want a game where they can fuck over everyone and get made having to play a game against actually skilled people.

Content creators have convinced the player base that it's the biggest demon ever but in reality it keeps the casual players away from getting absolutely hammered.
I get it as you always have to be at your best all the time as players are of your level. If you want to fuck about and use the worst gun in the game you are going to get stomped and not have fun but that's the experience lower tier players will get all the time when there is no sbmm. The gap between the top and bottom players in FPS games has never been greater.

This is where Halo did it right like 20 years ago splitting matchmaking off between ranked/social playlists of largely the same gametypes.

Yeah, I mean I mostly play Rainbow Six Siege, and it has ranked play with sbbm and all the core rules, standard play that doesn't have it but has the same rules, and quick play that also doesn't have sbbm and has simplified rules to help new players (and no penalties for leaving - on the other versions you get an hour ban for abandoning a match, and a decrease in reputation).

+1 for thinking this was out years ago. I was probably thinking of CrossfireX in fairness.

It couldn’t have a more generic and forgettable name if it tried.

Looks painfully generic. Also given the dramatic fall off in players that The Finals saw, I'll be surprised if this has momentum. I think The Finals is another classic example of the Devs only listening to the loudest players giving feedback. All of the PC streamers decided the auto aim on console should be nerfed as console players could actually compete, now it's almost impossible to win a game as you have light classes jumping around whilst invisible and you can't lock into them. Most gamers won't be on the discord but they'll notice they're not having much fun any more as they lose endlessly.

Oh wow, didn't realise The Finals was even on consoles. Sounds like a painful experience given how fast it is.

Oh wow, didn't realise The Finals was even on consoles. Sounds like a painful experience given how fast it is. It worked brilliantly at first due the auto aim being very generous. It did need tweaking as it tracked people too well at distance, but then they massively reduced it because the PC players complained they weren't winning every 1v1. I'm assuming XDefiant has PC and console cross platform?

I mean I remember you saying you thought it was going to be the next big thing and I just didn't see it happening. There's only so much time in the day that people have and I guess it's free and younger people have so much more free time but these things live or die generally by the steady supply of content but also how many streamers are playing it giving it exposure and in both areas it was lacking. In most cases the only left people left playing these games are skilled people and as a new person that's a hard hill to climb.

Yep! And at launch the numbers were good for Finals, but it seems to have since died on its arse.

It's wild how hard it is for online games to find sustainability now. You've got things like The Finals, that previous Ubisoft one which name I forget, the Cliffy B one ages ago, Redfall to some extent, Nightingale recently, etc etc. Some big budgets and the game is dead within a month of release.
Then you've got things like fking Palworld which get millions and millions.
Would not like to be a publisher.

How many slightly different but still mostly the same online shooters do we actually need? Especially since there are big established titles already that are free to play.
Try something new and radical, and you have at least a small chance of success. If it's just "90% like X, but with 10% Y", it will fail in this market.

I really liked The Finals. It was the most refreshing shooter I'd played in years. Unfortunately my friends decided to stop playing, as I think they felt it was getting too hard. I don't know if that was after the auto aim change as that didn't particularly bother me.
It's a odd game because it's possible to be absolutely steamrolled (which isn't fun), but it also requires a kind of... reflexive creativity which might not be to everyone's taste either.
Anyway, XDefiant *is* very generic and I think that's a good thing. I can't think of a CoD-style game that's F2P on Xbox and allows you to drop in and not worry too much about how a game goes. I can see XDefiant as a game people download and play with friends as a break from Overwatch, or Fortnite or PvPvE etc. Or even to play solo when they're not in the mood for their other games.

I forgot to say there *is* SBMM. There's a 'welcome' playlist that specifies it's on. The games have been quite tight on there. I don't know if it's temporary or permanent.

Exactly and that's why something like Palworld was huge. A small team, a smaller budget. There are far too many of these GaaS big budget shooters that just die on their arse because publishers are chasing the trend of what's current at the time of announcement rather than ,you know, making something that's fun.

I just heard it wasn't working. Massive are focusing on Division 3 which is probably the better choice.

Well, The Finals actually tried to do quite a lot of new things in its quest as a GaaS. The destruction physics are incredible for instance. But still seems to have failed. Can't win with innovation, can't win if you're too generic.
I can think of a handful of new games that have become crazy popular online mainstays in the last 5-10 years, mainly PUBG, Fortnite, Valheim, Apex Legends, Fall Guys, that 2D murder in a spaceship one, Palworld. Otherwise, it's presumably whatever CoD is out, FIFA, Counterstrike and the MOBAs.
Some exceptions obviously. For example, no idea how Hunt Showdown has persisted for so long. It's a great game, but it had piss tiny player count for ages. And, it's really brutal when you come up against people higher level than you.

There's an irony here in that Palworld is very much a Pokemon clone itself

I downloaded it and enjoyed the fire matches I had. I haven't played online in years, but it was free.
I could see myself hopping in and out as a palate cleanser of sorts.
As you all say, it's generic as fuck though, and just makes me want to be back playing the original COD 4 multiplayer.
Still, it was free.

There really is room for 2, maybe 3 games in each competitive multiplayer genre that will dominate the space. You're just not gonna compete with Fortnite, Apex or Warzone if you're a battle royale for example.

Yeah innovation only goes so far in a squeezed market all looking for your time. I think at the most people have 2-3 (at a push) long term games in them.

The number of players required for a 'success' nowadays really shows how skewed the market is. The Finals has above 15-20k players on average on Steam, so excluding consoles, other platforms etc. To me, that's a healthy number and lot of people to fill servers when the maps are like 12 players max. For comparison, Elder Scrolls online is 9,000 players and that's an ongoing service. But, that Finals number is down from 200k+ at launch and presumably costs a heck of a lot more to maintain, create fancy hats and season passes, etc. etc. And the revenue is obviously no way near Apex, Fortnite, etc. so scrap it and start again in the hope of getting the moonshot.
