Ok so update for you all.
I didnt have enough money to buy a shortsword and shield, so I just stuck with my longsword for now (without the shield this time!).
I checked out the combos. They make sense now, I never noticed before that they showed the direction your suppose to hold the sticks….DOH! I was just flailing away pushing random directions when I attacked.
I trained a bit more with Bernard and I managed to get a few hits in, so that was a positive sign.
Played a few more hours last night and at one point I got attacked by 3 bandits…….and I killed all of them (Just!). So that is definitely an improvement. It was still very difficult getting swarmed by 3 bandits at a time, but seeing my hits actually connect now from time to time was a big plus.
So a definite improvement now I understand the mechanics more. I'm usually really quick at picking things up and learning this stuff, but for some reason this game is just more challenging in that regard.
Onwards and upwards from here gents!

Enjoy greenhorn I am still very much a greenhorn after 60+ hours of playing. Enjoy mate it really is a wonderful setting/world with great characters and some fun quests/missions. tip: Cows when in a field with no one around make excellent sparring partners for your fists and or weapons

So how do people approach 'saving' in this game?
I lost about 30 mins of progress when I fast traveled and got ambushed by 3 bandits who then killed me. Very frustrating.
Do you just find a bed every now and then and sleep for an hour? Or perhaps buy those potions, although they are quite expensive.!

I just plan ahead. So I'll do a quest, then it'll auto-save a few hour(s). If I intend on doing random things, then I'll make sure I end up in my bed. No point buying those potions imo. I mean you could steal them.. there's a few random knights who walk around outside, and you can just choke them out without any adverse effects, and they usually have a few on them.

Yeah I think I need to sleep more. Modern game design has ingrained into my mind not to worry about these things. I need to retrain my brain.

I have lost over an hour, fair amount of progress on at least 2 occasions where I forgot to sleep. I tend to sleep when ever I reach an inn. I have unlocked the "bath house" perk where I get serviced...for free including bath and board, which also helps. I currently have 7 savioursnapps (or whatever they are called) I think I have used maybe 6 so far. I tend to buy them when I can. I did manage to loot a load of them from dead soldiers during a combat heavy mission (not by me however I was hiding in a corner for most of the fight!) but I died and lost them all...bugger!

The problem I have at the moment is keeping my armour in good condition, as I do get the odd occasion when I shit the bed and get hit a hundred times.

My plan after work is to get drunk on mead and start playing this.
Thanks for the good starting advice regarding training, reading, and using a shield / shortsword combo instead of a longsword.
By the by, what's the archery like?

Otherwise the game would not be playable for me given my time commitments and sometimes being only able to play 5 minutes.

You'll be cursing that you can't hit a rabbit an inch from you. Oh dear, so nothing like the satisfying archery in Skyrim? It's like all other combat, you've just got to keep practicing and levelling up. You'll find a way that works for you to begin with, as if you aim a certain way, you'll nail targets. There's a competition you can repeat in Rattay, which will help levelling up.

I hit 3 rabbits out of about 40 shots and they were no more than a few meters away from me. I really haven't attempted archery again since.

Spoilers
Got to second town. Was told to take my shoes off to bed. I didn't. Expected it to be automatic
Reload
Took of my shoes. Cause I'm a peasant but will be better one day.
I am curious now whether it mattered or I am overthinking that!

No it doesn't matter! You'd think sleeping in armour would cause your comfort to go down, but it doesn't either.

Just checking in all, how are your Henry's getting on ? I'm currently around 65 hours and on the "all that glitters..." quest line, and that feckin! German kicked my arse several times before I made him yield, we are now "buddies"

I'm about 30 hours in. Just took a few days break to get in Hellblade 2, but I plan to get right back into this after.
I seem to of spent a great deal of time on side missions and I dont think I've pushed the story on that much at all really. I am currently on the "My Friend Timmy" questline which looks like its quest 12 of 29.

The last side mission I did included ruining the reputation of an Executioner who had come to town. I dulled his blade which meant he had to have about 5 attempts to hack someones head off. It wasn't pleasant.
