My parents' laptop in the UK is probably about 6+ years old and is apparently running very slowly.
They seem to have somehow managed to at least upgrade it to Windows 10, but I'm not sure they're getting the latest security updates.
If I was in the UK I'd sort it, but it's hard to tech support it from half way around the world, so I'm thinking maybe they should get something new.
Apparently they don't use it much anymore, except for Zoom meetings and as a storage/viewing point for digital photos from the DSLR.
They mainly use their iphones and ipad these days, and the photos from those are mainly in iCloud.
Tbh, I'm wondering if they even need one. I assume they could do Zoom from an iPad, but I'm not sure how to handle the non-smartphone digital photos.
Given that they use apple devices and iCloud, a mac would be the easiest, but it's really not worth spending a fortune on something they'll hardly use.
They're familiar with windows, but it can be a pain to keep updated, so I'm wondering if a Chromebook or something would be more secure and also more of a reasonable price for a tertiary device.
Not sure how easy it is to sync up iCloud with a chromebook though. (I think there's a windows app). And I imagine most chromebooks having small SSDs that wouldn't be great for photo storage.
Anyone have any recommendations?

Sounds like a good iPad (get the glass protector!) and a good iCloud storage subscription would meet their needs best to me.
If they can work a smartphone they can work that and the updates are as simple as it can possibly get.
Maybe you could pair it with a keyboard stand too.
iPad with a USB C would enable most modern flash drives although I donât know if it would be reformatted transferring from PC to an iOS device?

They already have an iPad that they know how to use, though I have no idea how modern/old it is.
Hadn't thought of pairing it with a keyboard/stand, although now you mention it that's kind of obvious. If they had some kind of dock that'd make it smoother too, rather than needing to plug in a usb drive each time. If such things exist.
Depends how old their iPad is I guess. I'll have to check.
I've never owned an iPhone or iPad, so I dunno how well they play with external hard drives.

Are they transferring photos from the DSLR? If not then thereâs nothing in what youâve said that isnât covered by their existing iPad, although they should be able to plug the iPad into that with a USB cable and do whateverâs needed.

Buy a cheap windows laptop with a large screen and a full size SD card reader. Do the setup for them, install Teamviewer and ship it to them.

iPad is the easiest, although MacBook Airs arenât too expensive if they donât require a large amount of space.

I went Chromebook with my mum when I replaced their old windows device and itâs been ideal. I imagine youâd access iCloud through the browser. I set her up with a memory stick for photo storage

If it's mainly web and teams/zoom I'd second a chromebook.
Easy to use, cheap fast to boot and a bit more secure (nothing protects from phishing) but they won't need to mess about with antivrus bloat.
