Inspired by reading the "Top 20 Most Iconic Video Games Character of All Time" list put together by BAFTA to celebrate the 20th BAFTA Games Awards. I know these things are always bullshit at the best of times but this one really takes it to a new level... The list in full: 1. Lara Croft, Tomb Raider 2. Mario, Super Mario 3.Agent 47, Hitman 4.Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 5. Sackboy, LittleBigPlanet 6. Pac-Man, Pac-Man 7. Link, The Legend of Zelda 8. Master Chief, HALO 9. Kratos, God of War 10. Shadowheart, Baldur’s Gate 3 11. Arthur Morgan, Red Dead Redemption 2 12. Pikachu, Pokémon 13. Steve, Minecraft 14. Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 15. Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 16. Cloud Strife, Final Fantasy VII 17. Astarion, Baldur’s Gate 3 18. Kazuma Kiryu, Yakuza 19. Ellie Williams, The Last of Us 20. Nathan Drake, Uncharted I mean, I can be persuaded Lara Croft deserves to be on top of that list... maybe. Not really sure how Agent 47 makes it to third place but hey, you know what, give them the benefit of the doubt. But it's when you get to fucking Sackboy at number 5 you know something just isn't making sense here... more recognition than Pac-Man, Link, and Pikachu? And two places for Baldurs Gate 3, a game that came out last year. Yep. Iconic.

Probably voted for by people. You can't trust people, they voted for Hitler.

2nd place be like "My name is-a Mario... Super Mario!"
(The mistake with Baldur's Gate is that Karlach isn't also on that list)

I adore Hitman but there's absolutely no way he's the third most iconic video game character of all time.
Bit of a daft list really. No room for Donkey Kong, Ryu, Samus etc?
If you read the descriptions from the website it looks like it's been written by ChatGPT.
"8. Master Chief, HALO Full name Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, this Spartan super-soldier appears in six games in the HALO franchise. He appears as the main character in three of the 19 HALO novels, as well as in the 2012 film Halo 4: Forward Until Dawn and the 2022 HALO television series."

Errr, Sackboy. At no.5? Right.

The top *nine* seem reasonable and to be honest I'd probably struggle to name more than nine game characters.
Shadowheart? 10th? There's some very thirsty gamers out there.

You can't even excuse it with something like "it's one character per franchise" because they put both Shadowheart and Astarion on there

Yeah that's a terrible list. How there is no Donkey Kong I don't know, no Ryu (or Ken). I'd put Bowser (and Peach, and Luigi) in there. Arthur Morgan before Tommy Vercetti? Guybrush Threepwood I can understand not being there, but would be in my list, and I would put John Madden before quite a few of them. But yeah, lists.

Well, we can make an FG most iconic video game characters list. My suggestion for number 1: Kane from C&C.
No, but seriously, Mario would be number 1. Lara maybe 2. Agent 47 would probably not be on the list or at least certainly in one of the last slots. Sephiroth probably instead or certainly before Cloud Strife. Mega Man would be on there somewhere. Maybe Samus Aran, although most people probably don't know her name. Geralt of Riva instead of BG3 characters. Diablo or Deckard Cain.

Half of these don't even deserve to polish Jill Valentine's S.T.A.R.S badge.

I guess we've got to a point in time where Gordon Freeman isn't relevant in today's society. The kids have won.

Should have made a Half Life film. It bascially writes itself, and Morgan Freeman would have been such an easy casting decision.
Apparently the Hitman movie was enough to give the series a top five place.

I’d say the top 3 should be Mario, Sonic and Pac Man, in that order. Lara Croft is important enough but to me is very much tied to a period in time.

No Mega Man, list invalid. Not that it would have made it much better, many of those entries are just preposterous

I would also say John Marston beats Arthur Morgan if we're talking Red Dead.

Sack Boy is the weirdest addition there.
As someone who still hasn't played it yet the Baldurs Gate 3 ones seem odd too.
Most of the others I can see okay arguments for, but at the least they need to be rearranged drastically.
And there are definitely characters who should be there but who are totally omitted.
Pretty weak list.

Even if this had been a fair and honest ballot, it takes some balls to look back at it and say “yes, this is a fair representation of video games from Computer Space to now”. They could at least have said it only counted for video games introduced in the last 20 years or something… but then there’s pac-man, bold as brass.
