Ok so my wife and I occasionally come up to Newcastle for a night or two away from the kids. We generally spend a very pleasant drunken afternoon in the By The River Brew Co under the Tyne bridge then stagger next door for a burger or similar at the Hawker Market.
Well we're here now and it appears to have turned into a coffee place. WTF Toon?!
Where can we go for something similar? HELP

More than twenty years since I lived there but there was a pub near the junction of Jesmond/Sandiford/Sandyford (I forget) which I think was called the Railway. Near a hotel and what at the time was a Shell petrol station. They always did a nice pint and burger - we called it the Big Kahuna because it looked like that.
There was always a little strip of more upmarket bars up Jesmond as well which may still be there.
Edit - just had a look on maps and street view to try to refresh my memory. I think it’s called The Carriage. And the strip of hipster type bars is Osborne Road I think. It was never to my taste at the time to be fair but Newcastle always seemed spit and sawdust or footballer’s wives with little in between! I’m sure there is at least one Newcastle fan on here who might be able to help.

Depends on what you’re after and where you are. I usually go to places like the Mean Eyed Cat, Wobbly Duck and Town Mouse up at the top of town. The Cat and Mouse shared the CAMRA award so if you like your cask you’ll have a good time.
Further down, if you haven’t had a drink at the Free Trade while looking down the quayside, do that. The Cluny has always been pretty good for me too.
Actually, thinking on, you should be close to Two by Two who are a pretty great newer brewery here. I bet they’ll have something on this weekend too.
There’s been a lot of changes in town over the last few years. Places like Town Wall and Bridge Tavern have changed hands, Box Social’s shut.
Even Meat Stack, which I would previously massively recommended for burgers, has been a bit crap the last few times I went.
TL;DR: Free Trade and Two by Two at the bottom of town for beer. Town Mouse, Mean Eyed Cat and Wobbly Duck up top.
Edit: and I’m sure you realise this but it’s a bank holiday weekend, the first weekend after pay day and a home match day. Everywhere will be packed.

Uiruki has it right.
Once you’re along to Ouseburn for the Free Trade there’s the Tyne, Cumberland, Cluny, Ship, Tanners, plus a bunch of gentrified places to eat

Glad you liked it, and glad you could get there before they fuck up the view with a massive eyesore building right in front of it!
