Hey folks! I have a weird one here. So my laptop doesn't play any sound through any browser and I can't seem to find a fix. First thing I've tested was a video file saved onto the laptop. That works fine. However, playing a Youtube video through Edge, Chrome or Firefox results in complete silence. I've messed around with the settings in Chrome (including default sound behaviour). I've also opened up the Volume Mixer for Windows 11 and I can see that Chrome as an app has not been muted and is expected to play at full volume out of any device I choose.
Speaking of which, I have tried using a pair of 3.5mm headphones and a bluetooth speaker and I am getting the same result. Audio from a locally stored file, but no noise what so ever through a web browser.
Any ideas as to what the issue might be? This hasn't ever been the case before today.
Could it possibly just be my truly awful 5G broadband being an ass? This router blocks me from playing any video games online (although the consoles themselves have a stable connection and allows me to download games). I can stream video content from my phone and TV fine, too.
Bah, I just can't figure out what it could be.

Tried the following?
System > Sound >All sound devices > Properties
Go to System > Sound and scroll down to Advanced. Under Advanced, click All sound devices.
Under All sound devices, click on the output device used, for example, Realtek HD Audio.
Under General you will see Audio. Below it says: Allow apps and Windows to use this device for audio. Click on allow.

Not audio icon on the Chrome tab?

cubby Thanks for that. I have tried this and it is set to allow. Doesn't seem to change a thing. mrpon There is indeed an audio icon that appears on whichever tab is apparently playing audio. I can mute and unmute that tab, but to no effect.

Once I've spent more time on an issue than it takes to reinstall windows I'm done.

It’s so weird. I almost always have an issue with Windows laptops. Last time was the Bluetooth not working. Before that, a laptop fried itself by installing Windows 8 without my consent and shutting off the fan in the process.
I suppose I could reinstall and see if that fixes it. Just can’t be assed to back everything up at the moment.

What about the reset sound devices option in System > Sound > Volume mixer section?

mrpon Tried that too! It’s all seemingly set up fine. I even found a video for that, so knew exactly what I was looking for, but that wasn’t the issue either. @fake_Blood That actually sounds like a better ‘last resort’ (before reinstalling Windows). I’ll give that a go. Thanks!

I've been spoiled with a surface pro, every driver auto installs, compared to some previous laptops that require hunting for the right ones.

Speaker fans might need cleaning.

crashV👀d👀 That is correct. All sound tests work as normal and all locally stored files play as expected.

From personal experience: I know you’ve checked for not muted, but check that the slider is at max too.
Also, I think Firefox is going to be the key to solving this. Edge and Chrome both use the same browser engine, but Firefox uses a different one. This is going to boil down to a point of commonality between Chromium and Gecko

Deleting devices in the devices manager and then rebooting is an old trick that seems to help weird misbaving hardware.
The old fashioned Control Panel sound devices manager is a lot more informative that the new Windows setting interface, have you looked there?
Windows regards normal audio and communication audio devices as being different and certain apps will ignore the "wrong" one if the defaults are set up wrong.

Could it be related to auto-play being disabled by default?
In Edge:
In Chrome it's a registry setting:

I hate how many layers of settings there are now. Like they keep making it harder to get to the Network Adapters window, which I find useful to disable and enable an adapter which sometimes fixes stuff. Discovered there’s still an “Internet Options” screen which seems ripped straight out of windows 98.

Now this is for Windows 10, not 11, but what has helped me with this kind of problem in the past is to turn off Sound improvements and Surround Sound in the settings for the device itself.

I have been so slow to getting around to fixing this, but I still appreciate all the help. Just need a free evening to sit down and get frustrated all over again.

Hey folks. Thank you all again for your advice and suggestions. I had either tried a lot of them, or if I didn't I tried them after advice was shared, but nothing seemed to worked. My last resort was the advice of Chopsen, who suggested deleting the device and having the drivers reinstall themselves on boot-up. This actually worked, but turns out the issue isn't completely resolved. So now I've learned that on boot-up I might have maybe a 50% chance of having this issue every time I boot the laptop up. If I notice the problem, a reboot seems to fix it, but its seemingly pure luck. I don't seem to encounter any errors on boot-up, so I have no idea what exactly is happening, but I'm still experiencing this issue. Just I now have a temporary fix when it occurs, which is about half the time. Fantastic.

IT department would normally sign that off as resolved, then.

If you can find the drivers online, maybe try a slightly older version and stop Windows from automatically updating the driver.

Is there more than one audio device showing up in device manager?
If so, disable one, and delete the other. Then reboot.
If that doesn't work, do it the other way round, and reboot again.

Windows Update > Optional Updates See if there is anything sound related in there.
Also, I know this sounds crazy, mouse and touchpad drivers too.
