Another casualty to add to the growing list of people now looking for jobs ..... seems to be increasing by the day.

Is it really in meltdown though? Or is it just down to pure greed and the need to make even more money than the previous year?

Growth>Profit was and is entirely unsustainable and why there is just so much "content" everywhere. Gotta grow that pie even it's already baked and tasty

That EA mass layoff situation has also resulted in the Respawn star wars FPS being cancelled and the studio who were making a single player BF game also being shutdown.

Financial years coming up, time to make that bottom line look good for the shareholders who want INFINITE GROWTH.

Its crazy that these companies are laying off so many people while raking in billions. Its got to become unsustainable at some point, right?

How much of this is just the live service bubble bursting? Because as shitty as layoffs are, that can only be good for the medium.

The mental thing is that the decision makers, who green lit these projects.. won't get laid off. They put aside the millions to make Spider-Man, or whatever, then it doesn't hit the target the shareholders are happy with.. It's like every industry. No one at the stop is held accountable for their mistakes, but it's the grunts who take the beating.

The Spider-Man games must have sold shit loads though, how much would it have to sell to appease them?

I honestly can't remember the last EA game I played, let alone bought so if they are doubling down on sports games and live service I can't see that changing any time soon.
EDIT: The first Star Wars Jump Face game. Dunno about the one before that, though.. maybe Titanfall 2?

Just glancing and seems SM2 sold basically what the original sold (currently at 10 million units for the sequel and the original sold about 9 million between September and November). It is by far the biggest selling PS5 game, with Ratchet & Clank (another Insomniac game) being the second at just under 4 million.
Messing about with Insomniac seems nuts.

The Spider-Man games must have sold shit loads though, how much would it have to sell to appease them? They had a reported 315 million budget. Just think how many copies they need to sell in order to break even, let alone make a massive profit.

9m copies sold is a pretty healthy profit then.

"Live service games are the future. Make more live service games"
"Why didn't your game make money?"
"Because everyone else is making live service games and people haven't got enough money to live and are cutting back on games purchases"
"You're fired"

Anyway not really the point I guess. But more how a live service game, with far less budget can sell more than a massive AAA budget. Perhaps these decision makers need to go.. well lets set the budget lower? As much as Spider-Man 2 was insanely impressive, on the face of it, there's a lot of similarities to the other two games. I didn't feel like I was going, wow this is a great new experience, other than ah yeah the tech is impressive you can zip instantly across the map.

This is the worst of capitalism on show, basically. Companies can't be satisfied with doing good things and maintaining their position, there has to be "more". Hopefully those laid off can either find a position elsewhere, or ideally help to create something completely new.
I had a weirdly sanguine moment when I was thinking about all this. I would miss the anticipation of new games, and the dopamine rush of getting the next big thing, but really, do I need it all? I've got enough games to last me for the rest of my life already.

Might be some slots opening up in Dundee. Shock. Horror. Working in an office for five days?! I remember a time (before I went freelance) when working from home was the exception rather than the rule. How times have changed.

If there evidence that the job wasn't getting done, sure. But otherwise it's just the usual bullshit.

Messing about with Insomniac seems nuts. Having been in the vague orbit of these things its possible they got hit with the 'duplicate functions' rationalisation. If you have a load of companies now under one umbrella, you don't need five risk departments, five HR departments, five finance departments and so on and so forth. The 'talent' may not have been hit, its often the support staff that get rationalised.

After playing tomb raider again I would love a return to more level based games, tight and focused. Most games now always end up being 60-100 hour slots in massive worlds.
Quality games shorter in length would also surely help work loads and budgets? I'm no accountant so maybe it's not viable but it's certainly something I would welcome.
