I had a long spell of being exhausted constantly, trouble concentrating, feeling generally miserable, doctors couldn’t do much apart from tell me to rest. Anyway my daughter had a habit of calling me stinky daddy and stopped being cute so did the old Google search for things to avoid eating, thought I’d give dairy a skip and see what happened, didn’t expect much being a generic white guy. The next day felt like I was on a comedown from a Friday night bag of pills at the Fridge, the day after I had a weird fizzy feeling all around my head like when pins and needles is wearing off. From there on I had my energy back and could focus on things again, lost 2 stone in a month without doing anything different. Fuck milk Sounds like I need to cut out milk. Actually, I don't have much milk these days, and just the occasional cheese. But does that mean I have to cut out chocolate, custard cremes, etc...?!

Custard creams are often ok, Oreo’s are vegan, just check the label. Same with most dark chocolate, but often they’ll add a bit of dairy. Cakes, donuts etc say bye bye. ice cream is one of the worst things to eat with a lactose problem but vegan magnums are great. Probably better once you get used to not having dairy, you aren’t left with a slimy mouth like dairy gives you. Same with oat milk

I was always told Japan didn't have much dairy and westerners stink to them as a result - is that a myth? I was told it when on holiday in Tokyo as well, but maybe they were just being polite and trying to tell me to take a bath

Dunno. They definitely have a lot more dairy these days than they used to, what with creme cakes, cheese, lattes, etc.. Though stuff like cereal+milk and cheese are probably less frequent than in the UK. I'd say it's not that different tbh. Harder to get vegan stuff, or oat milk etc.. as well. I've often heard it said that 'Japanese people don't have BO', but based on traveling on packed trains at rush hour, that definitely isn't true!

Did you try any of the lactose free alternatives first? My daughter is mildly intolerant so has lactose free milk (lactase added) and coconut yoghurt but can now tolerate butter and cheese better. elstoof

Nah, the thought of neat milk squeezed from a cows udder makes me gag now tbh. My wife gets the lactose free milk though, since I stopped she inevitably cut down and seems like her tolerance dropped as a result. Butter and hard cheeses have much lower lactose content so easier to digest, tbh it’s almost impossible to cut out entirely so I minimise what I reasonably can and leave a buffer for what slips through the net. If my burger comes with cheese I’ll be ok, not like I’m eating burgers every day

convercide Amazing memory! I used to eat that stuff dry! That’s how good they were! I can’t believe they were phased out. Must have been a sugar thing. I don’t think they’ve ever made a better cereal. Yeah, was a huge fan myself. I think they had them in the variety packs at one point.

We were talking about how a Knightmare game would be a great idea, and then I was listening to an episode of Crate and Crowbar and they mentioned this game, which is apparently kinda inspired by Knightmare: store.steampowered.com/app/1885110/Cryptmaster/Not out yet, but has a demo. Looks (and sounds) kinda cool.

If my burger comes with cheese I’ll be ok, not like I’m eating burgers every day I just use lactase chewable pills now as it was getting annoying having to find out what stuff has dairy in it or a restaurant adding a cheese after I specifically asked for cheese to be removed from a dish.

Was Micheal Bentines potty time a real thing, where the show was about telling a story with a huge diorama, where invisible people left footprints in the sand and he did a bunch of voices.
Or were my parents slipping heroin into my food to keep me quiet?

A bit of both, it does exist though:- This was before my time, I was served up with Willo the Wisp for the kids TV choice before The News At Six O'Clock.

My god, the memories came flooding back, IT WASN'T A LIE!
Forgot it was basically a puppet show though.

I don't remember that one at all. Though the Thames TV logo was a nice burst of nostalgia.

Keeping this firmly on topic, I've had concerns about lactose intolerance too. I can get quite lethargic, but every test under the sun comes up clear. Yesterday was definitely a bad day for it, and thinking back I crammed an udderfull of the stuff into me before the day had even properly started. A smoothie with milk and whey powder to kick things off.
Picked up a couple of DF milk replacements and I'll try a few days without. Which means no regular weekend pizza for me... Arse.
Never had upset stomach/the runs, which is what you tend to associate more with lactose intolerance.

I never had an upset stomach either. It might not be the cause but it’s worth trying and you’ll notice a difference in days if it is

Yeah, that was my thinking. Even if it's not that, I'm only out by a few quid and the hardship of a weekend without pizza. Easy test to do before I bother my doc again.

Some pizzas are ok without cheese tbh. Dominos isn’t too bad, and Franco manca I prefer without

I prefer no cheese to diary or vegan cheese on a pizza a lot of the time if I’m honest but then my bot rot is for a different reason further down the pipes so that might not apply to the specifically lactose intolerant

Inspired by someone posting a scan of a Special Reserve ad in the GAME thread; I used to adore Mean Machines, (followed by NMS and Mean Machines Sega). I was always so excited to get a new issue, and see what new games they were covering from Japan. I would read it cover to cover, and then just repeatedly go back to all the old issues, marvelling at the screenshots and imagining what the games were like.
When I was growing up my parents would spend £30 max on me for my birthday and then £30 at Christmas, so I got two games a year and thus carefully maintained a top five list of which ones I wanted based on the opinions of those mags. And never once did they let me down.
Good times. Good, simple times.

Yeah I also got two games a year although it changed when I got an N64 for Christmas with Mario and the year Zelda came out I was given that and F-Zero for Christmas. Fuck, my mum was really good with the gift giving even as a single parent.

Yeah you had to choose wisely. I loved Final Fight and was so excited when streets of rage came out - but that Christmas they couldn’t find it in the shops so they couldn’t get it. I was initially disappointed, but the game they got instead was Biohazard Battle, which turned out to be excellent.

I absolutely coveted FIFA 96 and got it at Christmas (I think) and it sucked.

CVG was my go to for years, I seem to remember they had a section on yellow pages for some reason.
I also enjoyed EGM, being a US mag made it seem better than it probably was.

Yeah, CVG was my go-to. Yob's section was brilliant.
I seem to recall them giving Super Metroid something like 7/10 though, so nobody is perfect.

EGM was my go to mag of choice. I remember the street fighter Sheng Long April Fool that some idiots at school thought was real. Come to think of it there was another magazine that did a Mortal Kombat for SNES April Fool that added gore and bosses if you did something stupid like tape a penny to the cartridge. The same gullible oiks fell for that too and brought their SNES into school to try it out at lunch. Oh how I laughed at them

My Gaming Magazines of choice were:-
Super Play - a great magazine for the SNES that didn't talk down to it's audience
NMS - Nintendo Magazine System - a bit more "official" but a good read and decent research.
Total! - More comic book in it's appearance but they didn't mess about with their ratings, always got the good games correctly predicted.

I stuck with CVG through the highs and lows. It was a mag that at times was the best on the shelves and other times one of the worst depending who was working for it at the time.
I remember the furor when they ditched the percentage based scoring for the High Five system… ironically that might have been when the mag was at its best, and now very few outlets score games out of 100 anymore.
Was also a big fan of the Official Sega Magazine, which later became Sega Saturn Magazine. GamesMaster was like the bad lads magazine, sticking it to the man by giving Sonic 2 something like 66% in the first issue. Although it had to have some of the worst graphic design of any magazine ever in its later years.

Mean Machines and also when it turned to Mean Machines Sega. Sometimes I would get Official Nintendo Magazine despite never owning a SNES. After that I didn't pick up a games magazine until PC Gamer when I was around 14 as we had gotten our first pc and the magazine used to come to demo discs which were like the holy grail when you had a 56k modem.

My all-time favorite was Diehard GameFan. Later finding out how terribly it was managed made me love it even more. I also read EGM, GamePro and Game Players, but when I discovered GameFan, it took over as my go-to.
I also really enjoyed Next Generation, which I think was a spin-off of Edge. I didn’t know it at the time, but I think they reprinted some of the Edge articles in it, along with their own pieces and reviews. It was much more serious than the others, but harder to find so I didn’t keep up with it as regularly. It felt like a treat when I picked it up.
