Hi all,
Embarrassingly, I need help as I’m tying myself up in knots online.
Currently we have one ps5 in the house. I have my ps+ account and my son has a child account that leeches off my ps+ etc.
I’ve bought him his own ps5 for his birthday. What’s the deal with his account and online access on the new ps5?
Does he now need his own ps+ sub? Is there any opportunity for him to still access my ps+ on his account on the new console?
It is likely we will be playing on the consoles at the same time. In one example, I’ve recently purchased Helldivers digital. He can play it currently on the ps5, but I’m guessing on his new one he won’t be able to (or at the very least us be able to play simultaneously on the same purchase and ps+ account?
So confused….which I hate 😂

Can you not just log in with your profile as well?

Make your son's PS5 the 'Primary Console' on your account.
This will allow him to share your digital game library and PS+ benefits whilst using his account.
On your original console you can play as normal as long as you're online and logged in as yourself.
You'll both be able to play at the same time.
Not sure if there's any extra hoops because it's a child's account mind you, I've just created my kids adult accounts on Xbox and PS because managing the parental controls is like pulling teeth in certain scenarios.

It truly is a pain in the arse if I remember correctly. Also gimped by any age restriction stuff even though you say you allow it on the family account. Whatever his age is, will restrict games with higher age category. I doubt you will be able to play online together as your son will definitely need a PSN sub for that. They are not cheap these days even for essential.
Pretty sure my son eventually created a new account and lied about his age, it was getting so annoying to access certain games.

This works perfectly for me. The boy has access to my library, can play online etc without any extra cost.

Child accounts are there for people that don't want to watch what their kids are playing. I learnt early on that they are more hassle than they are worth and your kid will get to an age where you are happy to play non age appropriate stuff and they won't be able to without losing all their trophies and stuff.
Watch and trust the little fuckers.. if not, dont give them an account

Interesting. That's exactly how it works on Xbox and that's how I have it set up for my own son and myself. I have the Series X and he has the Series S. But one quick question re: 'You'll both be able to play at the same time'. On Xbox, you can't play the same game at the same time. Is that the same on Playstation?

I guess I should be apologising to the Font Geek brotherhood for spreading fake news. I just tried this with Suicide Squad and to nobody's surprise, it works exactly as Pauly says. I womder when this changed, because I'm going to swear on the life of my mother that once upon a time, when I tried exactly that, I got an error message telling me that I could only play that game on one console at a time. For licensing reasons. I'm trying to remember when I tried this and I'm blanking on a time period. Has this changed in the last few years? Or did I just imagine this restriction?

I've seen that before, but was sharing between pc and xbox, the pc version was fixed by logging into the store and not xbox live.

I've only seen it once when I was (rather hopefully and cheekily) trying to run three copies of the Gears of War 4 back in the day, two on Xbox and one on PC. Needless to say it told me to sod off. Could run PC/Xbox and Xbox/Xbox but Xbox/Xbox/PC was obviously ripping the piss.
The only things I've seen that weren't sharable purchase wise is stuff like the Destiny Annual Passes and Early Access for Diablo IV, which were properly tied to your gamertag specifically, even though the actual main game was fine to run two copies etc.
