Woohoo!
2:22 - A Ghost Story (Sheffield Lyceum)
A decent attempt at a spooky ghost story that built the tension quite nicely throughout but couldn't resist throwing in a few too many jump scares that if anything detracted from the atmosphere they were slowly building. Cast was the usual mix of soap stars and Casualty regulars but they were all pretty good in their respective roles. Very definitive ending but I'm not sure it's entirely earned.

Vanya - A theatre production I saw in the cinema. I guess one needs to be more dramatic in the theatre, but I think I prefer Scott on film.

I read that thread title as Psued's Corden and nearly started blasting.

Last theatre trip was to see Kenny B's King Lear back in November. It got pretty middling reviews I believe, but simpleton me liked it quite a bit. Odd choice to go with an Ancient Briton setting, but it worked well enough. The performances and production were all excellent though and Brannagh himself was obviously superb.
Slightly different take on the character than most modern interpretations, which go heavy on the age and dementia angle. He was a long reign King here, but still physically fit (and supposedly that is authentic to how the original would have been, with stage directions noting him carrying in his daughter at the end).

Did Branagh actually play Lear? That's quite bold, though I guess no bolder than Ian McKellen playing Hamlet not that long ago.

He did. I had previously seen Jacobi play Lear about 10 years ago (an NT Live cinema showing), which had a very different energy to it. As I say, there was less emphasis on the dementia angle that a lot of modern interpretations go for and more just a general sense of him losing control of his mind as he loses control of his family and his rule.

I'd have given it 8 / 10 - better than Halo.*She was in it, I went with Mrs Alastair and Alastair Jr. Going to see the Stranger Things stage show in a few weeks. I will report back.

I went to Stranger Things - The First Shadow. It's bloody awesome!!
Awesome visual effects, jump scares, the guy playing Henry Creel is jolly good, and it gives a great backstory of how things started in Hawkins.
9.5 tubs of ice cream/10
I've dropped half a tub because the seats in the Phoenix theatre are somewhat cramped.

Took the missus to see Sprited Away yesterday at the London Coliseum and it was excellent. One proviso and warning should you go and take children is it is Japanese spoken word with subtitles (positioned in 3 places above and to the sides of the stage) which to start with is somewhat distracting to the action on stage until you adapt to it and it’s not too bothersome for the most part but you do need to be a fast reader at times.
Acting, set design, orchestrated score and the wonders of the Japanese Anime classic folklore tale about the afterlife is all complete in resplendent detail and lovingly delivered.
As the missus’ favourite Ghibli she was delighted with it and I thoroughly enjoyed it too. We saw My Neighbour Totoro before and with that being English spoken, the more focused story line and the awe of the key set pieces for me meant that Totoro edged it for me but Spritied Away is very close behind it and in some aspects superior.
9/10 if you love Ghibli go if you can!

Yeah, I knew that, which is a shame as my daughter would love it.
I hear Totoro is in English though and there's a new run happening in 2025, so I m definitely going to go see that with her.
