Weirdly, I find the art style of this game to look more like a next-gen Fable than the Fable reboot, which has gone for a much more naturalistic, realistic look.

Avowed targeting 30fps on Xbox Series X|S
it didn't look amazing from the video but I expected 60fps on the series X

We won't get 60fps until it's ready to port to PS5.

I get the sarcasm but I dunno it feels a bit weird for a 1st party game that doesn't look that spectacular or doing anything incredible under the hood to be aiming for 30fps. Unless it's another Unreal thing where it doesn't play nice with open world games.

I hope there is a mode for less UI elements like there was in the Pillars games.

It does look good. Some of the scenes look very detailed, which goes some way to explain the 30fps target, but given the overall colourful / cartoony / simplistic visuals, I was fully expecting at least 60fps, and maybe even an unlocked 120fps mode. From the start I was hoping Avowed would fill the Skyrim void, which it still might, so I'll reserve final judgement until I've played it, but I can't help but feel disappointed.

Nah, it doesn't look that detailed to be only 30fps. It really reminds me of the business with Redfall which also had issues with framerate because it was an Unreal game and framerate is generally achieved near the end of development from what I've heard from most devs so they'll probably have a performance option but well after release.

I heard Stalker 2 is 60fps. Not a good look considering it’s the same engine.

there was big thing on how powerful the X model is and this game aims for 30, (if it was hellblade 2 levels of graphic it would be understandable)
also if 30 FPS is the limit any frame drops will be more noticeable

I'm not sure if Hellblade 2, which is basically a walking simulator, in which the developer can at all point tightly control what the player sees on the screen, is the correct comparison to Avowed.

Also it’s not as if Obsidian are famed for their high performance rendering chops is it? That’s not their secret sauce and never has been.
Ninja Theory quite the opposite.

I'm guessing the late change in engine moved it from 60 to 30. Reckon they will patch it like they did Starfield and Redfall.

It was not direct comparison of hellblade, just using as level of graphics (as this game does not even have a fraction of that game) but better example is cyberpunk 2077 is 60 fps and open world
I watched the ign video and it does look like a RPG with speech checks which is good (and starfield devs could learn a few things from this studio) but the combat looks bland and not fast or interesting. I suppose its ok for gamepass as paying full price for this is a bit steep from everything they have shown so far

Sure. And it’s fine to be underwhelmed by the graphics. But anyone who is a fan of the Obsidian back catalogue knows that the visuals aren’t the draw. As long as it has that RPG loop and the storyline and the replay ability… it’s all good.
And if I want 60+ FPS I guess I could go PC for this one. That’s how I played the last two games in the same setting anyways.

its not just the graphics, its the combat as well. I was hoping as its first party title MS might of gave it a cash boost as its not like the budgets for their kickstarter games or outerworlds (which was budget title - which was understandable)
Lets hope the RPG side is good and the choices really matter

Again, sure. But we haven't played it yet and videos don't tell the whole story. Also, between Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim I've put several human lifetimes worth of play into titles with objectively UTTER SHIT combat. So it's not always the dealbreaker for me. Basically I'm still excited for Avowed, and I'll take it on its own merits. I'm glad they're still aiming for that AA hinting at AAA space - that's what I love about them, and that's how they can put out more than one game a decade. So I'm sorta pleased that the MS cash didn't just turn them into another AAA visuals factory.

At first glance the combat looks far more involved than any of the Bethesda first person rpgs, and yet I still love those games unconditionally.
Hopefully add in some Obsidian storytelling and this could be something special.
I have my balls crossed.

So I'm sorta pleased that the MS cash didn't just turn them into another AAA visuals factory. I was just about to make the same point about combat in The Elder Scrolls games. Those games had such great exploration that the combat almost didn't matter. That said, the archery in Skyrim was quite fun, as were the various mage abilities, and of course Fus Roh Dah. I still find it unbelievable that Starfield involves barely any exploration. I question whether Bethesda even understands what makes their games so popular. I still remain convinced Starfield can be fixed by simply introducing a roguelike 'jump sequence' when travelling to an unexplored system for the first time, filled with random encounters. The player would at least feel like they're treading their own path through uncharted space, and earning a reward for doing so.

It's actually a pretty good article. A bit sad that they have to hang it up on this idiotic XBox performance issue, but I guess that's what you get when you make inflammatory statements about platform performance. They should just have said that it's too early to speak about framerate targets on the different platforms and nobody would have had to crap their pants in anger.
