Anyone playing this? Not a fan of Avatar generally but this has grabbed me with it's lush visuals (I'm so superficial). Lovely open world and the whole Navi thing makes a change from Far Cry real world stuff. Missions are so so but it's the exploration and fidelity of the environments which are astonishing. Nice movement across the landscape, crunching sounding weaponery and the critters are very well animated and excude character. Running on a 4090 with all settings at max (tried the Unobtanium settings which lowered the framerate too much for my liking). Pleasant surprised as I wasn't really following this.

I borrowed a PS5 copy from the library, to see if it had any appeal for me beyond "damn it looks pretty"
Damn it looks pretty! Even prettier than Horizon!
The traversal is fun!
...yeah, that's all I got, really. It would have been a good pandemic game where I just wanted to zoom around and not think about stuff too much, but right now I see myself getting bored quickly.

stuz359 From the library that I work at. A library is a place where you go borrow things for free, and then return them after a predetermined amount of time.

In a capitalist society? Fuck me.

Post by MolarAm🔵 on Dec 16, 2023 23:11:34 GMT
Yeah it's weird right. Instead of paying for something that you will never actually own (digitally at least), you go to a place and borrow it for free, return it after a few weeks, and go borrow something else. And you get to support your local community and help the environment by reusing resources.
But in England at least, your local governments aren't funding them. So it's capitalism for you, no escape.

Anyways, so far the blue cat massacre is a 6, maybe 7/10 for me.

I was posting about this in one of the other threads; I’m really enjoying it! I do have a soft spot for Far Cry Primal and this feels a lot like that mixed with The Division (another fave) so no surprise I’m digging it. Not a fan of the source material, but it does make a change to have a narratively consistent reason to he clambering around the trees, taking out bases, futzing about up cliffs, gathering, crafting, and wotnot. The scale difference when humans are around is fun too. Given its inspirations it’s only ever going to max out at 8/10, but I’ll take it. Story is no worse than the movies too. Even when targeting 60fps it’s a looker, on Series X. I’d imagine on PS5 you’d not even notice the minimal loading, which kicks in when cutscenes trigger. Nice to see the foliage just being there rather than popping into being there. Decent sound too. Most importantly: it’s drawing me back in for just one more session. Open up just one more bit of the map. Clear one more refinery. Find one more upgrade. Loving the minimal HUD option too even if it does mean some moments of WTF am I supposed to go now.

The sound is pretty great. Very atmospheric and really adds to the overall presence. I'm going with the 'explorer' way of doing things which, can be, a little too vague to be helpful. Case in point, was told to get some swamp hive nectar or somesuch, read the journal about where best to find it (swamps, doh!) but didn't go to the swamp the game wanted me to go to (explorer turns off waypoint markers) and spent an hour traipsing up and down a swamp with nothing there. Had to turn on the 'guided' mode to get shown where to go. The other issue with the 'explorer' mode is will say 'go south of the river x' - well river x is not on the map yet because I have yet to find it - I suppose I should 'explore' more but still.

I’m kind of siding with the RDA on this one. Everything in nature is trying to kill me, and I just killed 50 guys because I needed some honey.

Okay, now I have a flying lizard but I need to kill more humans because the bees are sad.

Yeah, given that they’re all “I can’t wait to get Eywa’s gifts back to the tribe, it makes me so happy to help and be at one with nature” they don’t mind a good bit of casual slaughter on the way.
Some of the most irritating side characters in any game ever. I swear to fuck if I ever heard the person voicing the nerdy human in real life I won’t be held accountable for the maiming. When the knock knock joke came over the radio I wanted to stick my hoof through the tv.
Great game otherwise. :-D

I picked this up for £39.99 from Smyths. I’m not burnt out by Far Cry mechanics or open worlds, as the last one I completed was Far Cry 3, and I played a bit of Primal. So far Avatar is hitting the spot. I know it’s a franchise a lot of people take the piss out of, but for me I really like it. I have fond memories of being wowed when it came out on blu-ray back in the day. Also interesting you can turn off all hints for waypoints in explore mode, which is very welcome and I haven’t found it too confusing where to go either.

Wife bought me this for Christmas.
Stuck a couple of hours into it last night. In typical Ubisoft fashion an almost overwhelmingly large map and number of gameplay systems are opening up at a rate of knots.
I'd prefer a traditional marker on the compass for objectives rather than having to hunt around with my Navi vision because I'm a lazy git, but other than that nothing is rubbing me up the wrong way yet.
Does indeed look absolutely gorgeous, there's a real Crysis 3 style moment when you exit the facility for the first time.

You can just set a manual waypoint on a quest location if you wanted a pip on your compass to follow. Faff, but not too much faff. I too felt the systems overwhelming at first - not because any of them is particularly complicated in isolation, but just that so many of them appear in unexpected contexts. The SID tool to scan equipment does a lot more than you might think on first look; it can unlock things, for example. Hint hint. I've opened up the second major area now, and the game keeps on giving on the visuals front.

Yeah I saw that, like you said faff but not too much faff. Redfall did something similar, current objective wasn't tracked on the compass and you had to set a waypoint manually, all a bit odd.
Really does look nice, performance mode holds up really well image quality wise from where I'm sitting, basically flawless with VRR as well.

It really clicked with me when I gained my ikran. It’s a really chilled open world. There’s nothing constantly trying to kill you every 5 minutes, like the other Far Cry games I’ve played.

Can’t believe more people aren’t talking about this game. I’ve done the plat on Spiderman 2 and I’d say I’m having far more enjoyment on Avatar.

Even playing with the target 60fps framerate it can be a real looker.
There’s one annoying graphical artefact on Series X that I thought was intentional at first until DF pointed it out and now I can’t unsee it. Apart from that there’s not much in need of patching thus far.
Much as I do love the game, it’s very much the Division wedded to Far Cry and there’s going to be a cap on that appeal.
Jumping off a cliff and summoning my flying mount mid-air will never get old, however.

(File under irrelevant: but this alongside Robocop and Armored Core 6 has been my seasonal rotation and I’ve had a fucking blast with them all) These are three games I want but the timing of their releases made me skip them. I could see this or AC6 easily sneak onto my “would’ve been a GOTY contender had I played it on release” list.

I think sometimes you get in the mood for this type of game, where you're doing fairly repetitive tasks, but sort of feels rewarding as well. My major criticism of the game is the finding superior/exquisite materials, which is a complete ballache to find, unless you have a guide open. Sure, if you're trophy hunting, then a guide is fine, but for something you really require to level up.. seems like bad game design.

Yeah, I see myself in that. This template is comfort gaming for me.
I have only gone for a couple of specific high end crafting interests and quite liked the sleuthing of the biome types and wotnot. But it is a chore, for sure.
Not sure it’s strictly necessary for making progress though. But then I’m only up on the plateau so far so there may be another difficulty spike coming.
Still a cracking game. Loving it.

Only just getting back into this after the madness of Christmas but holy hell this improves immeasurably after getting your mount/Ikran.
Not a moment too soon either, the sheer amount of ground I was having to cover on foot for side missions and the like was starting to test my patience.
Does anyone let out random Navi like noises whilst playing this? Just me then? I'll get my coat, nothing to see here!
