I can't find a thread to put this in so ... here we go.
I was recently reminded of the film Payback (don't know why), a film I've not seen in years. I remember quite liking it's gritty setting and colour palette and darker humourous tone.
Fancying another watch, I downloaded it from the high seas and ... it had a completely different third of the film after Carter & Fairfax are visited.
The big boss was a woman called Bronson that we only ever hear on speaker phone. She arranged for a money drop at a transit stop and then it involves a shootout before escaping in a car.
The version I remember seeing years ago had Kris Kristofferson as the big boss and involved a pretty heavy (for the time) torture scene. I must admit to preferring the version I originally saw over this one.
I'm now oddly interested in films that I've previously seen which have alternative versions. Anybody else have examples where things have drastically different versions?

Cinema Paradiso - technically the same ending, but the director’s cut has a completely different feeling to the theatrical release. Much more bittersweet.

The alternate ending to I Am Legend is infinitely better. It's also going to be the ending the sequel is based on which is probably unique. Still a shit version of the book though, The Omega Man is far better. |

The film Red State had an alternative ending that never got filmed but they made a comic out of it and it’s absolutely bonkers.
The Korean film The Wailing has a completely different ending depending on the region you watch.

Recently I rewatched the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The original ending to that (which is still a scene in the film) had the main character ranting about the body snatchers, then turning to the camera and screaming THEY'RE ALREADY HERE! YOU'RE NEXT! YOU'RE NEXT! And cut to credits.
The legend is that this ending really freaked test audiences out, so much so that people ran screaming from the theatre. So the studios tacked on a travesty of an extra scene, where the invasion gets reported to the proper authorities and the army comes in and fixes everything.
It suuuuuuuuuuuucks.

I am Legend is the only movie I've watched where I got to the end and I immediately googled 'I am legend alternate ending'.
I knew nothing about the movie going in, and I haven't read the book , but it was soooo obvious that the theatrical ending just didn't match.

I can't even remember the ending of that. It's on Netflix or prime at the moment I'm sure I've seen it. Might give it a rewatch today.
Just googled it. That alternate ending sounds preferable but is still a far cry from what the book had. I don't read books, maybe I should o_0

The original ending is like the entire movie is setting up something, and then it just doesn't go there.
The alternative ending kinda goes there, but comes across as far too positive and so a bit cheesy iirc.
The ideal ending would have been a mix of the two.

Strictly speaking Wayne’s World and Clue don’t have alternative endings because the alternative endings are the actual endings not alternative ones.

I always preferred the original "I slept too long" ending to Army Of Darkness. Clearly they did too since Ash Vs ends in a similar period.

The only other one I can remember is on the DVD of Bulletproof Monk - which is an achievement on my part because the world at large has forgotten that film existed.

When I watched (must have been the original version) this with my young son around 7 or 8 years ago he got very annoyed, "Where is the rest of the film? That isn't the end!" Etc... Older now he has managed to watch cancelled TV series with ambiguous ends and cliff hangers. |

Another vote for I Am Legend. Not brilliant still mind you but it does at least vaguely allude to the point the book was trying to make, the original ending ditches all of that completely.
The Sixth Sense had an "Extended" ending on the DVD which I always quite liked. Has a nice little introduction by Shyamalan as well talking about the fact it was his favourite scene but it had to go.

Sounds closer to the book, though my only memory of the movie was going "what the fuck is this shit, it's nothing like the book." |
