Thought it was about time to make a thread for this most unfashionable of games.
The only COD I’ve ever not bought at launch was Vanguard but with all the spending I’ve done on other stuff this is veering towards being the second.
However…I do like me some campaign goodness and the new open world PVE Zombies sounds reasonably exciting, although I’ve never quite understood vanilla Zombies.
I’m also not sure if that’s replacing Warzone.
Anybody jumping on?

Honestly I was very disappointed with MW2 even after buying it cheap, I really enjoyed the MW reboot but 2 felt like it had lost something and the missions were either overlong or just plain bland and so for me it felt like a tribute act had developed it. The way that MW3 was supposed to be an expansion originally then magically changed into a full priced game leaves me feeling more cynical than usual about CoD. I hope that the acquisition by MS might change things such as making it a two year release but money talks so maybe not.

I always like it for my HC TDM fix, nobody gets close to the feel of the guns for an online shooter. Haven't played the campaigns for a while though.

The whole expansion thing stemmed from a polygon story didn't it? At no point did Activision say there wouldn't be a cod this year afaik. I liked the beta, it has issues but the movement and fluidity is miles ahead of mw2.

I didn’t like the shoehorning of Warzone stuff like crafting into the campaign very much, the final mission seemed like it lost momentum because of it. I also didn’t like the tank boss fight and the daft Fast and Furious jumping across cars thing. Yeah there was quite a few moments in that campaign that fell flat. It had an air of ‘new mission, new mechanic’ didn’t it? Whereas the MW19 campaign was just focused and terrific. I’m a bit worried that there’s so little campaign info available right now. The MP beta seems to have been very well received although even for COD there seems to be so much recycling of assets.

Campaign has been developed by infinity ward for this one so expect it to be of a decent standard. They have gone with more freeform missions than usual though with a few different ways to achieve things. Don't expect an open world or anything but bigger areas a bit like the sniping mission in the last one.

I find Call of Duty rather problematic. The systematic racism within it's core narrative is rather troubling.

Ok cool, make a thread about it.
There aren't many of us that play cod on here and I don't really want the thread turned into a Eurogamer article. Much better if it has its own place if it's actually something you want to discuss.

Very little interest in the remastered MP maps, and Warzone just can't touch Apex for me at this point with almost 4 years of Apex played. I do enjoy a bit of Ground War, which sort of feels like classic Battlefield but with modern control and response. And the gunplay is very good, with the constant exception of everyone always jumping around corners and sniper quick-scoping that they'll just never address (these two things really impact on the 6v6 MP to the point that I just can't do it anymore, it's awful).
I'll play the SP at some point but I'm in no rush, especially at launch prices.

That doesn't mean it's more than a rumour though. It's certainly got as full a feature set as a full priced release would have.

The crafting/sneaking missions in MW2 sucked, so hopefully they’re gone.

Because when it got moved from expansion to box product release they assigned a bunch of other work to it. Now it is what it is, but it wasn't intended to be packaged this way.

According to one journalist of course (who could be correct but it's not gospel).
Also if that is the case and resources were thrown at it to make it a full release then it's not a dlc any more. It has a full weapon set, full quota of maps and zombies. It also brings a new (and really quite good) game mode.
It's funny that crafting mission as soap was a fan favourite but that doesn't seem to have extended to here. I thought it was a good idea that needed slightly better implementation.

The rumours for a Sledgehammer dev'd expansion originated prior to the MW2 launch, and they weren't from Schreier. Schreier is literally the most reputable industry journo going. I'm fairly confident that his tweeted info is accurate (he wasn't stating it as a rumour, it was very much as fact with his "let me make this super clear", and if he was called out to be wrong he would have made a retraction or correction), but it's largely irrelevant at this point regardless.
The question will be around whether the content is good enough for the purchase price as is, not how they were intended.

I read that they were using the OG Warzone map as the location for the campaign which wasn't particularly great news to hear. But if this started out as a cheaper priced expansion it would make sense to reduce development time.

That would be a very weird choice. And I would have thought everyone would have made articles about it.
Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere personally, so I'm assuming it's not the case.

Either way at the point it becomes a fully featured cod game it's no longer a dlc so the discussion about if it ever was isnt really relevant now. You can argue if a new cod game is ever worth its price as it's a similar game to the year before but that's a different discussion entirely.

So Warzone stays apparently. So four game modes including the campaign. I scarcely think that you can ever accuse COD of not being good value tbh. Looks like Zombies will be on a Warzone type map too.
Warzone itself never caught for me. I enjoyed it once (with user @frog and his mate) and then I did enjoy it - I think it really relies on comms and at my age and with family stuff, chores and other hobbies arranging regular game time with IRLers is hard.
I also didn’t like the PVP element of Warzone. Loved the PVE and wish it was all like that. Zombies apparently is.
I reckon it would make sense the ‘open missions’ will likely be based on the Warzone assets. Perhaps this is the holdout from the DLC thing but I think it’s almost certainly been expanded on if true. There will likely I think be the usual tight narrative stuff, can’t imagine Terminal coming back and not having a level built around that.
The politics of COD I agree is a discussion that I’d rather not see derail the thread if possible. I’m just role playing an action film basically for the spectacle and the excitement. Don’t really need to be judged for that - of course CIA backed special forces do not necessarily represent the views of the player. I’ve been tempted to comment on the politics of all the Black Metal stuff in the metal thread for instance but I just don’t think it’s necessary - people are just consuming entertainment or art.
I do think a thread on these topics (maybe a multi purpose separating art from artist thread?) could be a good read.

They said that those missions would be mixed with strictly linear missions.

Yeah, Warzone will always stay, it's an adjacent product and not part of MW3 (F2P vs Premium). They use the same launcher and stuff, but they're different things.

I got wires crossed and thought you meant the whole campaign would just take place across the Warzone map

Ahhh, no 😀. But yeah I kinda thought they would have to reuse assets to get it out of the door because it just felt weird to go straight to MW3, so I guess this is how they're doing it. Hopefully the campaign is more interesting than MW2.

I actually haven't even tried MW2 campaign, which i suppose i should.
I got lost in the DMZ and never made it out for many seasons. Except for all the exfills, but I always went back.
I love that mode so much.

I loved dmz until it just ended up 6 man squads everywhere. Completely ruined the game. I quite often fancied my chances against a 3 man squad but as a solo against 6 unless you are phixate or someone like that you are basically fucked.

Looking forward to it. The beta was fun. This is the only online game I play these days. I am boring though and tend to stick with TDM, Dom and KC modes.

Although I did think Cold War actually gave it a run for its money. That was so good. There is actually a preview of a single player mission on YT - some sort of MGS style submarine infil to a castle prison, that looks kinda similar to the castle gulag in the original MW2. It looks good. Just had a quick look at a guide for the MW2 campaign and I think it’s worth a go if you haven’t finished it. I reckon there’s definitely more good than bad. The ‘crafting’ missions (there are 2) I actually think the first long one was great, it was the finale mission that was a bit gash.
