I don’t know about my favourite, but the ending to Flashback made an impression on me as a kid. I think that’s the first video game I can think of where you don’t exactly win.

3 stick in the mind.
Impossible Mission C64
At a sleepover 1984/85. Played it all night swapping on and off with my mate. I got the final piece and had to wake him up before confronting Alvin Atombender (name?) and the "No no, no" scene. Not sure how impressed he was with that!
Strip Poker (Artworx) C64
Maybe 1985/6. Bunch of us got out of School lunch and raced to my place to checkout my latest hooky game from a US contact. Played against 'Melissa' and 'won' with around 5 mins to spare before we had to get back for afternoon classes. Not my finest gaming hour, or 35 mins anyway.
Journey PS3
Much more wholesome.
I'd followed the game a while before release - even had chance for a quick chat with Robin Hunicke, 'face' of the game at that time, at Nottingham's much missed (by me) GameCity event. So found myself on my first play exploring and then noticed another player. We met up and then ran through the rest of the game, finding stuff and 'calling' each other to take a look (no voice comms).
Not a long game but we made it through to the end and battled up the mountain. Af the end, I seem to remember the gamer tag was shown briefly and then that was that.
Never felt the need to playing again as it was a perfect experience, quite moving in a way, that I didn't want watering down rinse/repeating.

One of the earliest games I can think of where there is only a bad ending is Infidel, by Infocom. But there might have been some earlier examples?

3hrs sounds about right from what I remember. Still a solid 3hrs and I think it's on Game Pass? Yeah, I remember beating it in two sittings and thinking, oh I could’ve beat that in one. Journey also.

Klonoa 1 had a surprisingly sad ending for a kids game, and as I recall it was completely out of the blue
Now that I think about it I think sad or bittersweet endings are my favourite

Hmm, don't remember too many endings. I usually neither particularly like or dislike most of them.
Cryostasis had a rewarding one, but what really matters is all of what leads up to it. The ending I got in The Cat Lady (one of the better ones) worked emotionally as well. A Machine for Pigs for how confusing and affecting it was.

PsilocYeah, I know what you mean, the ending of Panzer Dragoon Saga hit me for the same reason. Same as FF10, which was posted to start this thread. They definitely resonate more as memorable, probably because of the emotions they evoke.

As you said, the ending of Klonoa came right out of nowhere, which is why I didn't care much for it.

A lot of people love a game till they hit the ending, then it drops from a 9 to a 6 for them, but for me it’s all about the journey.

Good point. The ending itself rarely has much weight for me in comparison to everything that has come before.
Delivering on the promise of a story can be difficult. Or perhaps a game has dragged on too long or (which seems to happen a lot) somebody thought the final act should be a difficult grind.

Agreed. That's partly because in a game you've probably been interacting with it for a dozen hours, and then the ending is often just a 20 second video clip, so it doesn't make as much of an impression.
I remember the 'ending' of KortOR1 being good, but that wasn't actually the end of the game, it was the point where the main story twisted. There was probably a bunch more gameplay after that.
Oh, I put the Sands of Time title screen in that thread, and the Sands of Time ending should also be in here. Great ending.
