Anyone playing/played old MMO's? At the moment, I'm embarking on a nostalgia trip in Everquest. I've even managed to find my last nostalgia character I rolled a few years ago - Anyone up for an old MMO session?

I fired up FFXI for about 8 months, stopped in April this year. I've played it on and off for 20 years now, something like 300 days of total playtime...

Well, fuck knows how I managed to get to level 15. On logging in, I have absolutely no fucking idea what I'm doing And I'm in a hostile zone. So, er, I think I'm going to roll a new character to work out how to play this again!

I remember getting it for PS2 back when there was hype around it. Didn’t know where to go or what to (probably just needed to talk to NPCs, in hindsight). Wandered away from the starting location and saw some rabbits. They murdered me quickly and I never turned the game on again.

It's weird, I've played a ton of genres but I've never been remotely interested in playing an MMO. I think at the time they were super popular I had moved away from pc gaming to consoles, this would have been my third year of uni so just after Splinter Cell Chaos Theory came out and I was still rocking AGP so I managed to get an ATI card that still did Shader Model 3.0 but as PCI-E was the new thing and I would have had to do a complete rebuild and as a poor student that wasn't happening. I know they were on consoles but I never associated the genre with console.

Me neither, though it depends on whether you consider Destiny an MMO (Bungie themselves don't). I think the idea of grinding a lot for very, very slow progress doesn't appeal to me.

Over the years I played Everquest, Wow and Guild Wars 2. Everquest is the only one I periodically pop back into to take a look at.
My main was a Ranger back in the day, and I spent my days being routinely slagged off for either pulling too many mobs or not pulling enough mobs. Got fairly deep into the raiding scene at the time, but was never really my favourite part of the game.
I believe these days the game is free to play, with some restrictions slowing things down, or there's access to the test server which is pretty neat for a revisit where you just want to level up a character fairly quickly.

I've now loaded it up and rolled a new character to get familiar again as my other one is too complicated to work out (necro fucking INSIDE unrest!) There are loads of servers available. I chose the standard eq project 1999 pve server (the green one). It has over 700 people logged in at the minute. It's going through the scars of velious expansion at the moment. Not that I'll get that far but still. Read up on the servers and the green one is the most popular as not everyone is fully loaded so there's less twinks etc. The blue server has an older economy so everyone has had time to rinse it. So green is pretty fresh. I'm just going to have a pootle and see what happens. Wood elf druid since I've never tried one

despite not playing for a hundred years I think I could probably still find my way from freeport to qeynos. Can't remember how to get to actual real life friends and family without sat nav though.

Never played Everquest, but I did play WoW for 7 years (quit in 2012) and a bit of Warhammer Online.
After that I dipped into The Secret World on and off for about a year, but haven't touched an MMO since around 2013.
I do sometimes get the itch to noodle about collecting wolf pelts and grinding mats for recipes, but I just don't really have the time these days.

Probably doesn't count as old but I absolutely loved WoW 10/15 years ago.
New Level FTW!
Also dabbled in Guild Wars, Everquest 2 and Warhammer but never stuck with them in the life-wasting way I did with WoW.

Haha I've got a really vague idea but I'd get it wrong. I always ended up with characters on the other side, so to speak, in the elven lands. So I'm still pretty vague. I can, however, just about remember how to get to unrest from faydwer. Not that I've left the computer on and gone to the pub with an aim to level up to at least 5-10 later on or anything

Freeport... Commonlands... clinging to the edge of Kithicor Forest... Some Halfling Place... High Hold Pass... about a billion sections of the Karana Plains, Qeynos Hills... and home!

Kithicor forest! Karana plains! Oh, it's all coming back. Let's see. From kelethin to unrest. Kelethin, then er...is it greater faydark or lesser? One them anyway. And be "very* careful to avoid a white unicorn in there. And then butcherblock mountains. Um, after that I think its straight into dagda's cauldron, and then hug the coast and hope like fuck the blue goblins don't get you, and then whizz into unrest. I've gotta try that later haha

Will always have fond memories of wow. Reminds me of better times (for me). Living at home with no cares. First online game and it seemed amazing to me at the time that I could play with and talk to people from around the world (well EU). It seemed so new, mysterious and exciting.
Used to play into the night with my brother with our pcs set up next to each other. Got into a decentish guild and did some raiding. The comradeship, the shared truimph, the dramas, the trolls, the flame wars of death, ninja looters, all made it a soap opera which I’d not experienced in gaming before.

It's weird when it clicks isn't it. Whole little world of its own,no matter which one you play. I played wow a lot too, but there was just something about eq. Probably because it was my first foray into it all. Apart from meridian 59 which I basically only have the haziest memory of.

Maybe roll through all the old classics one by one. EQ, WoW Classic, Anarchy Online, Meridian 59...
I could be tempted!

I only have one memory of it now, and I can barely remember what that even is. I'm definitely up for eq though. With online chat functionality nowadays it could be a right laugh/nightmare

MMOs were great when they were new and you got a good community going. Was a laugh and unlike anything else I had played at that point. At that time the online thing was relatively new, was before consoles were always connected. I think your first one is the one you get most nostalgic for or remember the fondest. I know a lot are still going but for me they represent a nostalgic past era of gaming. Fun to revisit but a bit melancholic as well.

You're never going to get the original buzz from when it originally happened. But I'm grateful that you can at least pop in when you fancy. The melancholy is definitely real though and linked with the nostalgia, but that's nostalgia for you - gotta take the rough with the smooth. When I rolled this new eq druid, it took me ages to get everything sorted so I roughly know what I'm doing and then I saw the initial quest scroll in my inventory that kick starts the whole adventure off. As soon as I read that, I immediately felt the pull. Amazing. 20 odd years later and it still invokes that feeling Like I said guys, choose the eq project 1999 green server and look out for a lunatic druid called vinylblair. I'll even give you a free sow (when I get it)

Is there some special set up needed for project 1999? I feel like I remembering it needing a specific version of EQ? You need 2 things 1, titanium edition of eq. This can be bought but I'm handily going to provide this link from reddit that has the whole thing available from a public Google drive - forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/459361/for-anyone-looking-to-join-project-1999-but-do-not-have-the-disks2, then you need to visit here and just follow the steps on the "getting started" option on the left hand side. Take about 20 mins - www.project1999.com/I've still got the disks so I can't vouch for the first link but the reddit comments suggest it seems to work fine

I've also got my elden ring to complete too. I need someone to help me kill maliketh at some point but I fear I'm going to be sucked into eq again Let me know if you want coop help in elden ring. I'm completely useless but it's a laugh isn't it
