I had one of these before and it ended up turning into the forspoken thread. Anyways, new games are on the horizon and usually bring with them a lovely (sometimes mostly useless) spec requiements chart that end up being a talking point for all the chin strokers in here. As has been the case with Jedi, Forspoken, TLOUp1 and a few others, these specs end up being BS as the games run like dogshit anyway because changes in memory, storage and CPU stuff lately.
To start it off the new game is Remnant 2 and the performance seems to be rough.
Remnant 2 Minimum Specifications CPU: Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Memory: 16 GB RAM GPU: GeForce GTX 1650 or AMD Radeon RX 590 Storage: 80GB available space
Remnant 2 Recommended Specifications CPU: Intel i5-10600k or AMD R5 3600 Memory: 16 GB RAM GPU: GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 Storage: 80GB available space
Comments from the Dev after many anguished pc owners have complained about poor performance is that it's been built with upscaling as a requirement so it's on by default o_0
Testing carried out and 1080p medium runs like stuttery ass on a 2060 with core i9600

Ratchet and Clank .. this one I'm really interested in the DF testing for because it's all the directstorage/rtxio stuff turned on.

I know they're an indie dev of sorts but upscaling is supposed to be an addition not a crutch.

Exactly that, it feels like it's become a crutch and devs are relying on it to bridge the gap but it hardly helps if the issue is CPU related.

Thankfully Remnant II runs fine on my setup. I have read about the performance issues though.

The crazy thing with Remnant 2 is that it defaults to Performance mode upscaling even at 1440p so the whole thing just becomes a smeary mess.
It doesn't help that it looks really quite plain; there is no HDR support on PC and I think that could go a long way.
In its favour I've not seen any stuttering ingame aside from the odd pause before a cutscene starts; that's been really impressive for an Unreal Engine game. If it has to be one or the other I think I'd probably take consistent performance over a few more frames.

Do we know if Remnant 2 uses the new Unreal 5 solution for shader stuttering? A recent video from DF tested it with one of the Unreal demos and it seemed to make a big improvement (although their conclusion was that devs should still combine it with a shader compilation step on first load in order to completely eliminate it).

It must do - the only time it had a think about that stuff was when it first started up but that was only about 5 seconds so I assume it was more likely to be it working out the performance of my system to preset the graphics mode (it chose high graphics with performance DLSS on my 3080/5800X3D).

/sighs.
So PC gaming is going through one of *those* stages again is it?
Sometimes it doesn't matter what you've got, everything just seems to play nice and scale to the hardware you have and you barely need to think about it unless you really care abut having the bestest gwaffix. Everything is at least playable regardless.
Other times, you get this nonsense where it feels you have to buy new hardware for every major release unless you want it to run like a powerpoint presentation.
Great.

Always happens a year or two after new consoles hardware. Been delayed a bit this time around because of the extended generation crossover.
There is also a specific issue that effects lots of games, but particularly Unreal Engine ones, where it will stutter for a few milliseconds every time a new shader appears for the first time. This effects everyone no matter what hardware they have. Also not helped by how ubiquitous Unreal is more.
Plus, there just seems to be less care going into PC ports at the moment.

In the process of getting back into PC gaming as my primary platform and can't quite fathom why your setup isn't analysed in some post install process that does this compiling before you can play? Must be some reason I guess - maybe due to allowing user to adapt settings which requires a recompiliation. Though surely letting user make basic resolution and details and then compiling on that so all is done before play is possible?

Some games do, like Forza Horizon for example. Lazy and rushed ports would be my guess.

Watching the DF comparison video for Ratchet and Clank and it puts paid to the idea that it was just marketing fluff that the game couldn't be run on a PS4. It really fucking couldn't. The minimum spec looks somewhat acceptable but an SSD is definitely required.

It can take quite a long time though; The Last of Us some were reporting it taking an hour or two. You also have to redo it every time there is a patch for the game or to drivers. Steam Deck, with its single system specification will do a download once in a while, so it is all ready to go when you are going to play. As far as I know, changing settings in the game shouldn't cause a need to re-compile. Generally, this shader compilation clears up most issues, but some games still manage to have some stutters even after doing this.

Forza Horizon 5 probably has the longest loading times of any game I currently play, every tine I start it up it'll say "Optimising for your PC", although to be fair, once it's all loaded, I never have any slowdown or stuttering, and the fast travel is near instantaneous.

Yeah but for a good PC game, like Total War or Paradox or The Witcher or Doom Eternal, there's a weird pre-compiling stage that can take 10 minutes on a bad day. The first time the game load ever, then it's fine.
PC Ports are just shit at the minute. Companies that regularly make decent PC games rather than console devs that make ports, it's all gravy. Doom being Vulkan based may be an odd exception.

I did initially think it was holding up (fuzzy visuals aside, which didn't look terrible but nowhere near as clean as the other 2) but any kind of fast transition/load and it hitched like a bastard. They did say they needed to do more testing on it because the GPU usage fell off a cliff during the loading suggesting that it was using CPU for decompression instead of the GPU. I'm still interested in how it all shakes out because the direct storage/rtx io should have a big impact on stuff in the very near future

For any aspiring urban city planners out there the Devs if Cities Skylines 2 have just revised their pc specs for the upcoming build'em up
Minimum:
OS: Windows 10 Home (64-bit); Processor: Intel Core i7-6700K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X; graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4 GB) or similar from AMD; RAM: 8GB.
Recommended:
OS: Windows 10 Home (64-bit) or Windows 11; processor: Intel Core i5-12600K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X; graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 (10GB) or similar from AMD; RAM: 16 gigabytes.

I've not paid too much attention to Skylines 2 (I couldn't get into to first one - I found it a bit bland and the UI felt quite clunky, so never managed to put much time into it), but do those recommended specs seem really high? Perhaps those are what you need for a maxed out 4K 60fps experience, but even then it sounds like they are pushing this one a lot more than the original game.

They've pushed the graphics a bit but it's always been a CPU and ram hog. I'd say the recommended ram will increase to 32gb. The first game is the whole reason I bought another 16gb
When I had my 3080 & Ryzen 3700x I used to sit around 40fps. No amount of fiddling would get me any better so I used to whack as many graphical mods on as poss rather than have the GPU sat idle. At a supersampled 8k, it did look quite nice watching a city go about it's business.

Ever since the 2.0 update for Cyberpunk 2077 came out I have gone back into "don't care about the new stuff anymore"-mode again. I'm guessing the high-end AAA stuff is targetted at consoles and the PC users which are constantly upgrading or at least always go for whatever hardware is currently the cutting edge.

Were the hardware requirements always this high or is this also getting some kind of graphics update?

Were the hardware requirements always this high or is this also getting some kind of graphics update? this is the first time the requirements/expected perf tiers have been released. Previous announcements have all been towards pc specific features. I'm hoping the performance is great out of the gate with it being nixxes doing the work. Guerilla did HZD but it took nearly a year of patches to get it right iirc

New build (when I get round to building it) exceeds all of the settings for very high, except the graphics card. If frame gen is there, might get to a playable experience for the high settings.
But I think I'm waiting for the 5070 or something like that to upgrade at this point. Probably because there may be another feature set exclusive to the 50 series (bound to happen, something like a dedicated AI core for ray reconstruction or something).
